About this creation
This Red Squirrel is now on LEGO CUUSOO. If you like it, you can support it to become a Lego set. See link: Lego CUUSOO
Lego sculpture of an Eurasian Red Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) sitting in a field in the Netherlands. Scale 1:1.

Our squirrel sits in a typical squirrel position while eating a berry. She also like to eat nuts and seeds of trees.

This squirrel is a female as you can see. She lives solitary, like all adult red squirrels. Notice the long fingers and toes with claws needed to climb in trees.
Lego squirrel: Tail, arms, fingers and mouth of the Lego squirrel are moveable.

Red squirrels often have a reddisch-brown color, like ours. Although other colors like grey and black occur too. The tail is used for balancing during jumps, but also to keep warm when sleeping.
Lego squirrel: The tail is build around a flexible Lego tube. To keep the tail in shape, a metal wire is put into the tube (the only part that’s not made from Lego).
Squirrel comparison [1]
Other Lego squirrels [2]
Lego sculptures of squirrels are also present in Legoland: The Red squirrel on the left lives in Legoland Windsor (United Kingdom). The squirrel on the right can be discovered in Legoland Deutschland (Günzburg, Germany).
Dimensions
Our Lego squirrel is built in true size (scale 1:1). Her dimensions in sitting position are: height x length x width = 18 cm x 20 cm x 8 cm
Approximately 650 Lego bricks are used for this sculpture.

Hi Andrew,
Unfortunatly we don't have instructions.
We are proposing Lego to release this squirrel as a Lego set. See http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/7162
We also made a small movie showing how the squirrel is build. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xT2HDMDD9LM

Hi All, Thanks for the many compliments concerning the bushy tail. A little explanation about the design of it: The tail consists out of about 30 segments. Each segment is build from 4 hook plates & 1 round plate with a axle hole in it. The axle hole of each segment is slided over the central tube. To keep the tube in the right shape a thin metal wire is inserted in the tube. |

That's absolutely awesome! Way to go on the accuracy of the squirrel! This has to be one of my favorites for two reasons: 1) It looks just like a real squirrel 2) I love squirrels! You should make a black one too. We have a ton of those around here.
Hi Cole. I assume that you live in the USA, in one of the northern states. The many black squirrels living there, belong to the "Eastern Grey Squirrel"-family: They are bigger than the Red Squirrels we have in Europa. The black variants can handle the cold better than the grey ones (the use the heat of the sun more effectively). It would be a challenge to try to make a black squirrel too. Thanks for your comment! |
