A WWIII MOC based on Tom Lehrer's song "So Long, Mom".
About this creation
*** Warning ***
This MOC contains political satire. If you're not comfortable with people exercising their God-given freedom of expression to make jokes about public figures, then maybe you shouldn't look at it - your choice.
In that case, return to your designated housing unit, citizen, and await further instructions from Supreme Party Leader.
"A yellow-coded curfew is now in effect. This is for your protection."
*** End of Warning ***
Play this song in the background while viewing this MOC (so the lyrics are set to music).
So long, Mom,

I'm off to drop the bomb,

So don't wait up for me.
But while you swelter
Down there in your shelter,

You can see me
On your TV.

While we’re attacking frontally,
Watch Brinkally and Huntally,
Describing contrapuntally
The cities we have lost.

No need for you to miss a minute
Of the agonizing holocaust. (Yeah!)

Little Johnny Jones he was a U.S. pilot,
And no shrinking vi'let was he.

He was mighty proud when World War Three was declared,
He wasn't scared,
No siree!
And this is what he said on
His way to Armageddon:

(It’s a kibbutz in Israel.)
So long, mom,
I'm off to drop the bomb,
So don't wait up for me.
But though I may roam,
I'll come back to my home,
Although it may be
A pile of debris.

Remember, mommy,
I'm off to get a commie,

(One of these things is kinda like the others.)
So send me a salami,

(It’s for Lieutenant Kelso)
And try to smile somehow.
I'll look for you when the war is over,
An hour and a half from now!
* NOTES *
* Credit for original song ("So Long, Mom") goes to Tom Lehrer. This MOC is a tribute of sorts to the song and the man who wrote it.
*** Behind the Scenes ****
The set-up for the first/cover pic, without the added effects:

Yes, that's my American Flag MOC photoshopped into that pic.

How did I make a television set with colored buttons show a black-and-white picture? Simple - I copied the screen part out, changed it to black-and-white using Paint.net, and then pasted the photoshopped image back in over the original color screen.
The actual set-up for the newscast:

And here's a deconstructed view of the technique I used for the brick wall (I got the idea from The Unofficial LEGO Advanced Building Techniques Guide):

*** DISCLAIMER ***
I am in no way endorsing war, use of nuclear arms, communism, or sending sausages to Mark Kelso. The original song was a humorous piece, and this MOC is intended to be similarly comedic.
*** END OF DISCLAIMER ***
* As usual, the program I used to build this is LeoCAD.
I then converted it to an .ldr file and rendered it with LDView.
For info on contacting me about permission to use the design or obtaining a copy of the 3D file I made, see my homepage.

Way to be politically incorrect! I love the satire here. For once I've given a digital creation an earnest "I like it," because this was great. Like Areetsa, I think some more of these songs would be entertaining. 'There's ten stuffed heads in my trophy room right now...' |

Haha, yeah, I don't mind the nickname. I know "Architect of Vonthako" is rather long and cumbersome to type out.

Hey AoV,
How do you convert text into 3D renderings again?
Make a new text document with a .ldr extension and paste the text in there. Then open the document with an LDRAW program.

You know, I didn't actually think this had any Tom Lehrer in it. D'ya think you could try a rendition of Poisoning Pigeons In The Park? Or, perhaps, "We Will All Go Together When We go", whilst we're looking for politically incorrect things to do? |

Wow, the Obama joke is funny. He basically is a communist. I don't think you are being mean considering what librals say about us conservatives. I have been getting tired of the George Bush jokes. I am still surpised that we elected a president who couldn't pass an FBI background check. |

By the way, went back and read some comments. Hypocritical this is not; it is satire and should be viewed as such. Just because some folks are in love with Obama does not mean everyone is or has to be. The guy is a borderline socialist, I am sure AV here would have had some interesting satire about GW Bush as well. You know why? Because he thinks, that’s why; he does not simply follow party dogma. Keep up the good work Archy.

Not a bad moc but putting Barack Obama along with commies was a strange decision- don't really get the joke- also you should remove this from a historygroup since this has nothing to do with real history since there is no third world war in history unless it is fictional war -or sort of what if- situation taking place before present day- then i could accept it as "fantasy-stuff"
Well, the "history" of it was in reference to the cold war and the considerable speculation at the time about the likelihood of a nuclear Armageddon. This song was out in 1965. |

To all the people who think I'm ragging only on the left side of politics or on Obama specifically: I would have just as harsh (if not harsher) criticism if for a politically far-right president, except the wall would have a different symbol ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Italian_Fascist_flag_1930s-1940s.svg ), and the other portraits would be of Abba Ahimeir, Corneliu Zelea Codreanu, Adolf Hitler, Ikki Kita, Oswald Mosley, Benito Mussolini, José Antonio Primo de Rivera, Konstantin Rodzaevsky, Ante Pavelic, and Plinio Salgado. Either extreme, far-left or far-right, leads to the banishment of freedom and the rise of tyranny.

Well I'm just saying, you posted how you were aware of any controversy that may be sparked by the "war" aspect of your moc, but you did little to suppress any controversy sparked by the Obama picture. Kinda hypocritical if you ask me
Unless it was my intention to make a point regarding his political ideologies and draw people's attention to that point. Besides, I clearly stated in the very next sentence that this MOC is intended to be comedic. What kind of dystopia has this nation turned into, and what kind of sheep-like drones have we become if we cannot joke about (or tolerate those who do joke about) the individuals and groups who have power and influence in this country? |

However the whole "Obama" joke was too harsh and wasn't really funny!
2 words: political satire. I criticize public figures all the time. It is the right and the responsibility of the people to make their voices heard, regardless of where they live. No human, regardless of their rank, office, or class has the right to deny other humans their God-given freedoms (within reason, of course). And if the politicians can't take the heat, they should get out of the proverbial kitchen - criticism comes with the territory. I didn't tell Obama to be leftist, socialist, or to bow to tyrants - those were his choices to make, and now he can grow a pair of cajones and deal with the consequences. Just because a person is the ruler of a nation, doesn't mean they are above reproach. We all need a slap to the back of the head once in a while to wake us up and let us know that we're on the wrong track.

OK, looks like you found the link (that I include in each and every one of my MOCs, as well as my homepage). It doesn't look like LeoCAD is available for Mac, but you can try Bricksmith ( http://bricksmith.sourceforge.net/ ), which is an LDraw application for Mac (can't give first-hand comment on quality; I don't use Apple/Mac products). As far as commenting on MOCs, it is generally considered poor etiquette on the 'pages to solicit your MOC on someone else's page. I might look at it if I have time, but I make no promises. I've got a folder with more than 80 notification emails of MOCs that I want to look at, and those are just the new ones. Remember, I have a life (college, social life, other projects) outside of MOCpages; and I still have the same 23 hours, 56 minutes, 4.1 seconds in a single day as everyone else does. I'm not saying this just at you, but as a general announcement. There are 10s of thousands of MOCs on this site that I'd love to look at, review, and bask in the awesomeness of, but sadly, I can only do so much in a single day. |

Why did you say "I am in no way endorsing war, use of nuclear arms, communism, or sending sausages to Mark Kelso", but didn't say anything about the Obama picture? :l
What do you think needed to be said about that? It was a subtle expression of a dissenting viewpoint - artists with strong political opinions do this sort of stuff all the time. Of course in the Orwellian dystopias that those other guys on that wall were/are running, we wouldn't be having this conversation, because a death squad would have taken me away in the night for daring to present the supreme leader in an unfavorable way. I was born in the Soviet Union, and I do not want to see America, the shining light of the West, become anything like that sort of regime. I've read your homepage, and I see that you're much more politically/socially aware than most people your age. You also seem to favor the viewpoint of balance and moderation, as do I. I think we can have a lot of interesting conversations in the future. -Peace |

Well, while he's not of the same caliber as the other guys on that wall (yet), he does seem to be more concerned with pushing his socialist agenda than with human rights, fighting terrorism, making America respected in the world, or anything that would be actually useful to this nation. |
