Techno Union Tri-droid
About this creation
Tri-droids were enormous tripedal war machines used by the Techno Union and Confederacy of Independant Systems during the Clone Wars. The Tri-droid was a massively up-scaled version of it's predecessor, the infantry Octuptarra combat tri-droid.
This version, used during the battle of Christophsis, was armed with 3 heavy laser cannons as opposed to the heavy artillery version as seen at the battle of Mygeeto. The Tri-droids were formidable in battle, eliminating infantry and tanks alike. Their rotating assemblies meant tthey could change facing almost instantly and made them alsmots impossible to approach.
The Star Wars universe holds a wealth of wonderfully designed vehicles and droids. The prequels and the continuing Clone Wars series are a showcase for so many new and interesting concepts and have provided me with loads of inspiration!
Like my AV-7, I'm not sure if LEGO will ever produce a version of this due to it's unorthodox shape and support issues - it'd probably make a very expensive set and not be hugely playable - but don't quote me on that. So out of love for all things droid-y, I thought I'd take a stab building this monster, the Techno Union Tri-droid!
I found the best way to realise the Tri-droids sphereical shape was to simply build a LEGO sphere. I'd experimented almost sphereical winscreen and cockpit LEGO elements, but these just didn't look right.
As LEGO don't produce transparent axles, I used a 3mm length of transparent perpex rod to support the Tri-droid. A little cheaty? Maybe - but it looks good!
The Tri-droid towers over it's enemies...
Anakin attacks from above, exploiting the Tri-droid's main weakness!
It's still somewhat a work in progress as between takling the photos and posting I've though of several different solutions to various parts of the model, so I'll probably be working on a newer version really soon.
Hope you enjoy looking at it! Comments and criticism welcome as always.

A sinister looking war machine. I like how you've built its spindly, spider-like legs and not worried about them being structural. Good use of a modified sphere too! |

I agree with the guy beneath me and I also think LEGO should make a set with a Tri-droid! Maybe CUUSOO is a handy solution! |

Beautiful, Simply Beautiful!
I've been working on a Tri-Droid of my own for quite some time now but cannot get the legs right, So can you please tell me how you got the legs so precise?
I used lots of SNOT bricks so I could get plates and tiles on the sides... nothing special really. I'm still workng on my second version of the Tri-droid which uses ball joints where the legs connect at the main body and I've taken out some of the flexibility so that it can stand without a base. Been qute a taxing build! I've photo and post as soon as I can. |

So I came back to my Tri-droid with a challenge on my hands: to refine the construction, rebuilding the lower section of the droid so it wouldn't need the big transparent base.
Well I'm happy to say yes! I did it!
I'll post my Tri-droid Mk.II when at the earliest opportunity. Look forward to sharing it with you all. |

Unfortunately I don't make instructions for anything this big. I've only ever made instructions for a creation once - a small set alternative.
It's unlikely I've ever do instructions for anything this big, I just don't have the time! |

Cheers for the further comments! @ Yuri: Being completely unable to defend attacks from above is a major weakness in it's own right! @ Joseph: The Tri-droid is the hugely upscaled version of the Octuptarra (read my entry above) of which there is an artillery version - two eyes per cannon - seen at Mygeeto and the laser cannon version - one eye per cannon - seen at Christophsis. |

Thanks for the feedback everyone!
Adding a stand was pretty unavoidable with the construction technique I used, but I'm already thinking of an alternate way to joint the legs to make it free-standing and without harming the design too much. It's going to be a bit of a challenge!
@ Warfare, Landkreuzer: The Octuptarra is indeed the infantry version - and precursor - to the Tri-droid.
@ Awesome-o-saurus: That's the artillery version. I'd planned to create it originally but went this way instead. I may do an alternate of it at some point though - it's also really cool. |

Beautiful! This is precisely how a tri droid should be. I'm making a tri droid too, but it'll be a simple grey one, and a bit oversized. I use the same technique for the head and I had the problem with the 3 'arches' too. I like how you added another arch for the symmetry. You've used some great building techniques, though it would be nicer if the tri droid could stand on its own. Great job! ~M |
