US Truck with classic approach in scale 1:17,5 with PF. It features solid axle suspension on all axles, Ackerman geometry on steering and fully functional fifth wheel.
About this creation
After I did finish the frame of the truck (while the truck was evolving I did change and/or improve quite some on the frame) I started working on the body work. Simultaneously I started working on the equipment that is attached to the trucks frame like fuel tanks, steps and mudflaps. From the very beginning of modeling these parts I wanted this model to have loads of details. Details can give a model realistic looks, but I also wanted them to be subtle, it is easy do overdo details, I did not want to do so.
My approach on building this truck model and its details is that I collect pictures, first general once later on more pictures on details. These collected pictures I did use to get inspired and I started to translate them into this LEGO model or parts of it. I did not try to build an exact copy of for example a Kenworth or Peterbilt.

A great help in building this model was this book “American Trucks 2” by David Jacobs my father gave me for my birthday. He asked me if there would be anything particular that I would like to have. Because I was building on this model I asked for a book on US trucks. My father was so generous to give me a 1:24 scale as well (not a new one, it was already assembled...lucky me... :-), this model also was a big help in this project.
One of the aspect on this truck that I think is subtle is this “Bar 9 x 13 Grill” attached to the sleepers back. In real live loads of trucks do have sort of frame or metal sheet guard to protect the sleeper. After giving this detail a thought I came up with the idea of this “9 x 13 Grill”. I was very lucky because at that time it was available in blue...and that's a very nice color that fits this trucks color scheme perfect. Adding “Dish 2 x 2 x 2/3 Light Reflector” and some chains and that what set...
I liked the idea of TLG of using “Technic Cylinder 4 x 4 with Pin Holes and Center Bar” for fuel tanks on the 8285 Tow Truck, but I new I could do better. Because this item was available in Chrome for a decent price at the time I was building this model I decided to use them. Like with real life trucks I came up with brackets attached to the frame of the truck to attach the fuel tanks to. Unlike the 8285 Tow Truck model the pin holes of the “Technic Cylinder 4 x 4” on my model where on top so I could attach “filler caps”...a nice touch though I think.
Puzzling with different kind of LEGO brackets I discovered that the “Bracket 3 x 2 - 2 x 2 (Space Seat)” suites best. I liked the shape of it and the length of 3 studs. One other advantage is the orientation of the studs, in both directions...just perfect. I did run into this problems during the build of this truck, a part is not always available in a certain color, but I was lucky this bracket is available in red too.
This picture was taken while the truck was standing upright on its grill and I did rotate it afterwards. Why all this trouble?... I wanted it to show the bottom of the truck, especially the bottom of the frame. Here you can see clearly how the steps, fuel tanks, mud flaps, bumper, front and both rear axles are mounted to the frame. The fenders, hood, day cab and sleeper are attached on top of the frame. This is one of the reasons this model gives the feel of a real live truck.
At the very beginning of starting building with LEGO again back in 2005 I started building truck models like I did when I was a kid. First one in this new era was the 8436 Technic set with a second rear axle added and connected to the drive line as well. Next step was to motorize it using item “Electric Motor RC Race Buggy”. Running into a lot of problems because of creaking and slipping gears as soon as one powered wheel lost grip made me realize it needs suspension. Suspension would prevent the wheels from loosing grip and this would solve the problem. Simple conclusion, loads of work to accomplish...I think the 5th or 6th suspension system started to work well.
While I was developing this trucks suspension system, its frame and its looks TLG released set 8275 Motorized Bulldozer with all the Power Functions. So I did replace item “Electric Motor RC Race Buggy” with this new XL motor. For the models steering I did use a M motor, this is all connected to the IR Receiver and a Battery Box. The Battery Box is hidden inside the sleeper and the receiver is hidden under its roof (take a look 6 pictures up that shows the sleepers roof).`

Nyaaaa... this one he** of a job! Exterior details are perfect, no place for discussions. The only pitty is that for this small? scale models you can't add bouth - interrior details/openable stuff and RC. There's simply no room for all of that. But the model is realy nice!! |
