MOC Olympics round 6 - Steef de Prouw vs. Kevin Fedde
My entry for round 6 in the MOC Olympics: a famous painting by a Dutch master in lego!
About this creation
- MOC Olympics Round 6
- Category: Mosaic
- My opponent for this round: Kevin Fedde

Yes, here it is. Johannes Vermeers famous masterpiece 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' (circa 1665). Sometimes referred to as "the Mona Lisa of the North" or "the Dutch Mona Lisa", this painting hangs in a museum in my hometown The Hague.

(It helps if you sit back a bit. Or look through your eyelashes, haha!)

Here it is on the desk. I thought that might give you a sense of scale. Pity I didn't include more space around it then ;-)

Some stats:
- Dimensions: 64 x 48 studs (50 cm x 38 cm)
- Dimensions of the original painting 44.5 cm x 39 cm
- Speed: 0 Mph
- Weapons: None
- Crew: None
- Onboard swimming pools: don't be rediculous.

Closeup shot of the mouth area.

Building picture. I've used a bunch of narrow plates on top of two 32x32 ground plates and two 32X16 ground plates as a basis.

The compare shot. I think this went pretty well, considering: a. I had never done a mosaic in my life before (either with lego or with other materials), b. I cannot draw or paint myself and c. I was trying to imitate one of the great masters of painting (Man, faces are hard!).

Actually, I am rather proud how this turned out.

More information about the painting on wikipedia.

You did a fine job. I certainly appreciate your effort. Not only are faces hard, but you took on the fantastic burden of doing this at a fairly small scale. You know, the lavish mosaics out there are typically much bigger. Granularity can be a prison. Regarding the 0 weapons: don't her smile or eyes count as potential weapons? And some poet or other must surely have gone swimming in his lover's eyes at some point. ;^}

Ha Steef! Ongelooflijk dat je berhaupt aan een mozaiek begint te bouwen zonder eerst een blauwdruk in elkaar te shoppen... Knap gedaan!

Sorry you don't move to the final ! However it means more amazing ships by you soon _ I bet ;-) I've lost too, and in a way it's better like that, I was scared to do the final with you as a competitor - It would have been challenging, but really TOO hard lol. Nice work once again !

Good as a mosaic, but just not good enough to stand up against Kevin's entry, Steef. You were a worthy player in all rounds (I still got the shivers from your steampunk entry!) but looks like you found your stronger adversary (is that spelled right??)Too bad, I would have loved to see you play the finals...

This is just a beautiful creation Steef! Amazingly put together and a wonderful homage to the original. My vote went with Kevin though based on the original concept behind his build. Still... truly amazing work! ~ Chris.

Nice job on the proportions and color choices, Steef. I have to say, though, that Kevin's technique was so original that it swayed me in his direction for the vote. I know you can't continue on, so I'll just say it one more time, great job throughout the competition, and this was another excellent creation to go out with!

Quoting Thomas Benedikt What prevents someone from using the mosaic tool in mlcad for this category? Sure is a lot easeier. :)
I take it that is some easy way of turning a picture into a mosaic example that you can then copy? Well, nothing, I guess. It'll be cheating a bit, though.

Quoting Kevin Fedde Very well done! I hope mine is up to par with that... I'll be posting in the next couple days sometime, keep your fingers crossed. One nitpick, though. Maybe you could have lowered her right eye one stud down, maybe it would have been closer to the original. But I don't know. Well done!
Ha, thanks. Actually, the eye was first lowered one stud, but that looked even more off for some reason. Can't wait to see what you came up with. I am actually planning on losing this round, so I'll keep my fingers crossed for that ;)

A brave entry, thats right. As a painter it is hard to make a face look realistic and i think it is even harder with LEGOs. Not for you, Steef. The expressions of her eyes and mouth are perfect, as well as the rest of this mosaic. Good luck!

You've gotta RESPECT the mosaic! I have been wanting to try one of these but fear I lack the brick (and the stones) for success. I like this a lot, you certainly picked a difficult reference and pulled it off well.
