Theme/Scale: Any, all, or none. Play to your strengths. (Be warned though, a Star Wars or Halo scene, or anything else way overdone for that matter, would have to be the greatest work of art since Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel to have a snowball's chance in Hell of winning.) Microscale, minifig scale, Miniland scale, Technic fig scale, some other scale, anything goes.
Deadline/Timeframe: 11:59 PM, December 31st. (This is MOCpages time, which is also United States Eastern Standard Time. If a link to your entry is not posted to the appropriate group thread by this time, you're out of luck.) Winners should be announced within a week of that. New MOCs only -- to be valid it must make its internet debut after the announcement of the contest.
Prizes: Two MISB Lego® sets. 8707 Boulder Blaster 4939 Cool Cars
The winner of the Vignette Contest will choose which one he or she wants (because, in my opinion, a good vignette is harder to make than a good diorama), and the winner of the Diorama Contest will get the other one. There will be no second place, just a bunch of losers.
There will also be ONE Honorable Mention (not one for each contest, one total). The prize for Honorable Mention is some Brickarms stuff I accrued during BrickCon08 and 09. If you, Mr. or Ms. Honorable Mention, are a devout purist who's never going to use these things either, then you don't get squat but the Mention.
You must be willing and able to give me an address in order to receive your prize. (If you cannot, I will keep it myself, thank you very much.) I will ship anywhere, within reason. Bear in mind that if you live somewhere especially remote, or on the opposite side of the world from me, I'd love to shoot it over there by the quickest possible method... but that a slow boat or pack mule might be friendlier to my bank account. If you, the lucky winner, are underage, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get your parents' okay before emailing me your address.
Limits: One entry per person per contest. You may enter both contests, but you will not win them both. Once you make an entry, you may not replace it with another.
Judges: Me. I reserve the right to appoint other judges to help out should the whim take me. These hypothetical judges may enter either or both contests, but will not be allowed to vote for themselves.
Entries will be judged on: Build quality/technique/parts usage/general awesomeness - This will be my main focus. Show off dem skillz.
Concept/originality - Wow me with your creativity. The Battle of (insert Star Wars planet name here) is not winning anything. Period. You don't have to invent a new theme, but show me something original. Something clever. Something cool. Make me laugh. Make me think. If you can make me cry, you automatically win.
Presentation - Clear, well-lit pictures against a non-distracting background are a must. Photoshoppery is okay, but you better make sure it's done well, and don't go overboard. You cannot fool me with smoke and mirrors. I will be looking at the build. Similarly, well written captions or a story can enhance a good entry, but will not serve to hide a mediocre one. I invented that trick. Don't think I won't see right through it.
Reading comprehension - You must have the words "Shannon rocks" somewhere on the page for your entry to be valid. Title, caption, word balloon, brick built, I don't care. Yes, I am burying this key bit of info way down here on purpose. Let's see how many people read this far.
Who built it - Your reputation, like your nose, precedes you. Entries will be judged on somewhat of a sliding scale based on the entrant's past work (if any). Don't think you're coming away with anything from me but contempt if you clutter up my contest with second-rate work. I want your best. If you've got a super-impressive portfolio and/or are one of my buddies, you will not skate through on your reputation.
Purity - If you absolutely must modify your Lego by drawing on it, cutting it, putting decals on it, gooping clay on it, mixing Megabloks in with it, or equipping your minifigs with aftermarket weaponry and accessories, well, it's yours to do with what you will. But keep in mind that I am a pretty strict purist. Any impurities better be subtle and better unquestionably add to the presentation. It would be a shame to lose just because you got a little sticker-happy.
Know what a vignette and a diorama is.
Anything on an 8x8 or smaller base, regardless of height or action, shall be considered a vignette.
Anything from 8x8 to 16x16 will have no more than two characters or significant events to be considered a vignette.
Anything larger than 16x16 will be limited to one character or significant event to be considered a vignette.
Basically, as the footprint grows, less must be going on for it to still have the "feel" of a vignette.
(Another helpful hint is that I myself, your judge, prefer the 8x8 standard for vignettes.)
Put simply, a diorama is larger than a vignette, and more is going on. There is no upper limit on size or action. There must be some kind of built setting. A car or a ship or a minifig alone is not a diorama. A car on a road, a ship in a hangar, is.
This is unquestionably a vignette:
It is not a particularly inspired one, but illustrates the points I want. (For one, it's in focus, centered, and you can see everything -- this is key, people.) It's on an 8x8 base, so by definition it's a vignette.
But what about this?
It's in the diorama folder on my page because its footprint is larger than 8x8, but since there's only one significant event (the guy walking), it would count as a vignette in my own contest.
This is a diorama:
Again, not a great one -- it's got potential, but lacks oomph (it's actually a test shot of an abandoned WIP -- there was to be stadium seating around this). As you can see, the ring itself is 16x16, and we have four characters on it. This would make it a diorama even without any surrounding structure.
Got it? Good. Now go build! And join the Vig/orama group to enter for your chance at stardom and free Lego!
Yeah, I didn't see the "All questions" part until after I posted my question, then I frantically tried to delete it but it said it would appear after 24 hours, so I couldn't delete it... Oh and I'm sorry for getting Mop Top banned too... ouch...

Okay, I built a good one, but it's Alex Eyler style. Does it still count? I put in special light and all that junk, so I'm not sure. Not posted yet, and you do rock, your one of the Shannons. (Wait, do you despise Ocean?)

I only joined the group for smack talk at this point. Though I am curious how big the equivalent of an 8x8 vig is in minland scale.
thanks to the digital ghosts among us! I do hope you all know though, I enjoy breaking, bending, and twisting the rules into an almost unimaginably convoluted, yet arguably legal state. Ask my oil painting prof at MSU...
Perfect, a timeline for me to work with. I've been toying around with some ideas for a while now, but am in ShangHai again, and heading back to Hong Kong, hence your red tiles are still sitting on my dining room table. I've got your address in my blackberry so fear not, your bribe, er, uh,..."payment for making me laugh so hard on the Chronos Project", will be on the way as soon as I get back home to the US. PS: I'll make sure to deliver the red tiles to your home before December 31st... I can buy more if one bag isn't enough. I just negotiated a 4M dollar real estate deal here, so there should be some un-used graft floating around in one of those accounts. Maybe I can wire you some RMB directly... Hey, I hope everybody else can't see this.

I think I got banned for asking a question...
Indeed you did. It's a shame too, I was looking at your MOCs and you've definitely got skills. I'd never banned anyone or been banned from a group before, so I thought you'd still at least be able to see it and follow the proceedings. Oh well.
Like I don't have enough going on already here but NOW I have to come up with something original here... sheesh. And even though I'm entering this, I don't take it personally that you didn't enter the MocOlympics... no really, I don't (hehehe) (I don't) ANYWAY... time to get crackin' on this. ~ Chris.
I think I got banned for asking a question... Whoops, I didn't see this page until after I asked when the contest started... oh well... Shannon Young Rocks! (Yes, I did read that far)

Hmmm...so many witty comments to make and yet no brain left at this time of night. That's really too bad for me. I would very much like to partake in your little quest for freebies. I shall deposit my name in said receptacle now. This is totally like drunk dialing, writing a comment at this time of night. Just stop now...stop.
So, just to clarify, if i don't have anything in my profile (curse my broken camera) and my vignette was really good, would I be down graded due to my lack of creations? Or have i totally misunderstood what you said? By the way, Shannon Young rocks!!!!
that's a great contest :) finally something that doesn't limit your creativity at all. And probably everyone should have enough time to make a little vignette. I'm looking forward to the entries. Thank you! ;)
