Dutch East Indiaman: Voc Rotterdam
This is what i'm been working on now when i have a holiday but cabin and most of the other stuff is older) It is fullscaled ship for a while and this took me some days to build about 4 i think... Here it is 17th century Dutch east indiaman- as periodcorrect and realistic as possible (the colors are also usual to the dutch eastindiamen or Voc-ships (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie) This is loosely based on the real voc Amsterdam and i named it after other great dutch city- and no i'm not dutch myself but finnish....
About this creation

Stern- as detailed as possible with two figurines and other decorations as 17th century ships had...

Name sign closer- it is decal- beautiful font isn't it Edwardian script i think- suits well don't you think?

deck

bow

Realistic flag of the Dutch East India Company-

Captain with his spyglass and behind him there are some soldiers with armors and helmets captain of the guard have red armor and feather in his helmet (soldiers are improvised so they may be not entirely correct)

Helmsman with tiller- for period accuracy i couldn't put classic wheel- because -as surprising as it may sound- classic ship's helmwheel weren't used until the very start of the 18th century (1708 or so that is what the all reliable sources say) But tiller is nice too- i made it working (actually it works better than the wheel of my 18th century British brigantine)

Other view of the deck

There is not much space on the deck with lifeboat...
But when the boat is removed there is a little bit more area for crew to walk around....

And grates can be opened (unfortunatelyguns must be removed too- my shiphull parts are too narrow i would like to have wider ones)
Cargo hold (under the grates) full of the chinese tea (barrels) rare spice from the spice islands (studs) and silk...

There is also a ship's galley -well it's actually just big pot not an actual galley but pretty realistic anyway...

And when some ropes removed and part of the poop deck it reveals the cabin- not as big as my cabinmoc- but i made it as detailed as possible- there is mats, food cup of tea and even painting of captains wife....

This pic shows a logbook too- but no bed this time- he have to use hammock (well there is not a one though.... sorry)
cannon removed with accessories and cannoneer- "balls" are too big to go inside though... i have 12 cannons total in this ship -but two are fakes because i run out of parts for cannon carriage (is that even a right term)

Inspiration pic from my Shipbook- it is very helpful when building correct ships- (like Star Wars cross-sections are good when building sw-ships- i haven't abandon sw if you think so...)

Real dutch east indiaman i don't own the pic- i just put it so you can compare- but it is not meant to be a same ship
I will do another ship that attacks this- guess what sort of ship that will be?

Love it. Dunno how accurate it is but it's just plain fantastic. The details, especially the stern, are really beutiful. How a legobuilder could be this great is beyond my imagination. I can't really see any bad side on this ship. I really like your captain. He looks so much like a deutch explorer. The way I imagine them, that is.

This is one nice ship you got here Swash! I love all the green colors and little details that you put into every ship. BTW ships didn't start using sterring wheels until like the middle 1700s but its great that you know that and put a tiller. But other then that nice job! :) Marshal Red

Great job, there's tons of detail throughout this Moc. The stern is great and the captain's cabin was also very period accurate.

Quoting Bing-Bong Brothers Nice ship, but it could use some overall cleaning up. I especially like the stern though. Also some matching minifigs would be great for a period ship.
Well- it had minifigs what is wrong with them? I tried to make them as periodcorrect as possible...

Quoting Sebeus I oh, that 4+ ship, I know it, my nephew has one, I tried to make it a good ship but these hulls are very annoying, I couldn't get a good result. one alternative is the new pirate ship... is has some possibilities though I don't like its masts
Paul Cantu did one pretty nice ship from it- i have to use those bad masts to my junk because i have not enough better old ones- fortunately i found longer maststep-parts from the shop- when they had some bulkparts for sale now they don't anymore i dunno why but i picked two and i didn't regret it....

Quoting Allarand Arcadia Actually, my mother is a History teacher so... But see the message. It is true that the orange up flag declined but modifications in the east ships were only made in 1702... Even if I made a mistake, it's not a huge one and I would be surprised if you ever make a Portuguese vessel: you know, we won the Dutch-Portuguese War and the dutch bought malacca to the muslims that pushed aside the 200 portuguese living there (the dutch and muslim fleet had more than 10000 men surronding malacca and still we resisted for a year).
Yes partially true -but you still made a mistake claiming the flag to be West india company's- it is definitely not- but anyway we have argued enough- but i say still that your info maybe right -but i have seen many japanese pics dating back to 17th century 1670s or so and they depict a dutch ships with modern red flags so there were east indiamen sailing in the china seas with modern red/white/blue flags some had voc symbol some don't (actually there is plenty of different voc-symbols like AVOC meaning that ship is from Amsterdam but anyway i think my ship is correct enough) It is surprisingly hard to do historically correct stuff -because even some reliable tv-documents, history books etc. have wrong info in them- like in the pirate documents about Barbarossa brothers and Sir Francis Drake -both show them using the spyglass before it was even invented....

Well, I looked it up and it was called "vereenigde" but spelling changes so the same word is now written like this; "verenigde" but because you refer to the old compagnie, it's all right to use "vereenigde", sorry for the confusing. Btw, maybe it's the same case with that flag, your flag is right, meaning it is the same flag the Netherlands have today. Actually I don't know very much about it, I speak Dutch but I'm from Belgium so I don't know much about dutch hystorical stuff. Anyway, I like the ship, and I also would even if the info isn't completely correct, Good job

Quoting Sebeus I btw, you don't have wide hulls ? too bad, such pieces would allow you to fully exploit your shipbuilding skills, I would love to see the result when you come across a Black Seas Barracuda or Skull's Eye Schooner
Unfortunately only old ships i have -are the armada ship (narrow blue and white hull) and admirals flagship (narrow dark gray and brown hull) and then the one very wide hull from the 4+ pirateship- my little brother's it was- but we are building together- it is hard to make that hull to look like good... maybe i should buy some of the new ships they have wider hull but it is made out of many pieces actually good...

Quoting Steef de Prouw I believe Rotterdam (now one of the biggest ports in the world) used to be of much less importance during the VOC period than it is now. Dutch cities that were powerful in the middle ages and the Golden Age sometimes came to be relatively small and less important towns today, and vice versa. The Hague used to be a small hunting settlement for the longest time, but is now the third city and seat of the government.
Oh yes i did a bit research it wasn't very big but still a port town and it even had it's own chamber in that company- so really strange that it hadn't a ship of the same name...

Quoting Steef de Prouw Awesome, simply awesome. You nailed every detail to the...er...detail! ;^) Having seen the 'Amsterdam' in Amsterdam with my own eyes quite a few times, I can say that this is one of the best lego ships I have seen on here. I especially like the little cannons and the backside. And you are correct, it is 'vereenigde', as it's the old spelling. Strangely, there seems to have never existed a 'Rotterdam' before (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_East_India_Company#Notable_VOC_ships), but it does now!
Yeah strange because Rotterdam was one of the biggest dutch port cities? Well i picked the name well XD
