MOC olympics round 2 - Steef de Prouw vs. The one they call Erik
My first post-apoc MOC, dubbed "The neighbourhood watch"
About this creation
- Group: 2 (bracket 2B)
- Opponent: The one they call Erik
- Category: Post Apoc
- MOC title: The neighbourhood watch

It's September 2014, almost two years after the catastrophic events that eventually drove most people on the planet insane. After about a year of civil wars in just about every country in the world, the dust had settled down. The world's population was decimated. People teamed up in clans to help protect what precious little was left to them.
Now that things were calming down, people were starting to talk about rebuilding the world that was mostly devastated after all the fighting.
But then the animals came. Mutated by the various diseases they caught off the humans. And with their mutations, they also seemed to have learned how to cooperate with eachother to team up against the humans. After the global diseases and civil war, mankind suddenly stood against a new enemy.

(Click on the pictures to enlarge - slightly)

This is the story of group of about 30 or 40 men and women in the English town of Neo-Sheffield. I would like to say that they were all good people, but survivors of a brutal war rarely are. However, under the circumstances, they all knew they needed to stick with eachother in order to survive. They called themselves the Neighbourhood Watch.

It had been quiet in the Watch's zone for quite some time now. However, the people on guard duty remained watchful.

Behind almost every door or window, there were eyes keen to find any sign that the beasts might return.

Guns were getting rarer every month, and ammunition even more so. The Watch had to make do with all kinds of improvised weaponry: swords, shovels, powertools, bows and arrows and even just sticks and fists. They used sandbags or tires for their protection.

Keith was on guard duty in the bell tower of the old church. It was a good shift, as it was one of the few places with a working light.

Inside the broken church, things seemed to go on as normal. Or maybe it was a survival instruction of some sorts?

Inside the old bank.

The old toy shop was badly damaged in the civil war. Members of the Watch were slumped in the alley between the shop and the bank, in wait for possible action.

Good to see that nature is trying to help with repairs. Or maybe the plants also have plans to take over?

Standing next to Roger's personal guard tower was also a good place to be. Roger is often the first to see danger approaching.

Oh dear! After a couple of roars in the distance, the roadblock was quickly crowded with backup forces.

Don't worry, there's no ice cream left in there.

The second floor above the snack bar. Wait, what's that in the corner? Oh it's only a model for promotional purposes.

I'm sure there aren't a lot of barber shops open these times, but that really is no excuse.

There! Those birds are usually the first sign of an animal attack. They're probably the scouts. Save your bullets for later.

The tension was rising, as alarm sounds were sounding through the streets of Neo-Sheffield.

Just in time! It's the backup forces. This leftover model from the civil war is shared between several neighbourhoods in Neo-Sheffield. It is a powerful halftrack vehicle with a fast double-barrel gun. However, if the Watch doesn't find any new fuel soon, it will just be another stationary object.

Ah, that looks much more secure, don't you think?

Okay Thomas, I think you've been practising enough on that poor old car.

EEP! It's one of the mutant monsters. Get that ten-legged freak, Thomas!

The monster ran away aflame, but I have a feeling there are more of those around.

Good job, lads! I, er, stay here watching things from my vantage point.

Uh-oh! Now it's really on.

Get out of the way, Thomas! We want to shoot him.

Keep firing, people!

(Censored shots of animal cruelty)

After the beast was killed, Jason here got to upgrade his pneumatic zombie-puncher gun. Don't worry, he means the gun is a zombie. Actual zombies don't exist, even in a post-apocalyptic world.

Is it over yet?

Some building shots of the town.

These were all first timers for me: the monster under construction, a nice gun with visor, tracked vehicle with multiple rollers and a very motley crew of post apoc town dwellers.

It's pointless going through a listing of all the thoughtful details here. Important is that the overall effect is palpable decay and tension. Well done.

WOW... This is an excelent MOC. Untill I saw this I thought all Post Apoc MOCs had zombies in them so I didn't make any. Ever since I saw this I have been inspired to try out some Post Apoc MOCs. If you want to see my first post apoc MOC just look on my page. You don't have too though. I know it's rude to ask someone else to view your MOC.

Again, I want to thank you all for your visits and comments. I really enjoyed making this, as it put me on a creative side track from building space ships. Most of the things pictured were absolute first timers for me. And if I remember correctly, the last lego town I built was when I was about ten years old ;-)

That was really....strange. Anyway, I had fun making this, and that's what it's all about. Also, I am running a bit low on lego now, so I decided to break down the Imperial Lander for round three.

Talking 'bout multi-talented, but hey, this is ridiculous... Man, you are so great at anything you set out for, I'm SO impressed with your work! Steef, I live near Sheffield and parts of it look like that now! Great job here, especially as no zombies no matter how much I love a good zombie. What makes people think the end of civilisation will cause the dead to rise? Love the monsters, the overview shot with little tufts of greenery poking through the road, and the ruined buildings. Good luck.

Quoting Christian t Holy Snot, I love you. wait... thats a bit strong... well, This moc is up there with some of the best iv ever seen, one because its apoc and i love apoc, and two because this is... Awe-inspiring? Yes. That fits. If I get past round against CrimsoGiger, and some how am up against you- ever- I don't really even deserve to win. Heck, If this is your first post apoc, its better than all of my apoc put together! Great job and i really look foreward to seeing you continue. ( and no i dont really love you. I do respect you and look up to you, but that was just for effect. really.)
Thank you very much. I love you too. But I don't think you should give up before you even enter. The way I see it: every moc-off begins from scratch, and what we've done before doesn't count. Please don't be intimidated by piece count, as it's of less importance than creativity. I think this competition is about originality and doing stuff you normally would not do. I've only been posting spaceships before, but I love this opportunity to expand on my themes. But even now, some people are acting as if I've already won, while we haven't seen Erik's entry yet!

Thank you! But how is this anti post-apoc? /edit: oh, I think I got it. It's the zombie remark, isn't it? ;-)
