Rietveld Rood-Blauwe stoel/Red Blue Chair
My first LEGO project. The Red-Blue chair from Rietveld, dated 1917.
About this creation

Since a few months I rediscovered my old hobby. Playing with LEGO!
I was browsing the internet and discovered that I am not alone. What I found was all kinds of creations. So my first project is this simple chair from Rietveld.

Some History

The Red Blue Chair was a chair designed in 1917 by Gerrit Rietveld. It represents one of the first explorations by the De Stijl art movement in three dimensions. The original chair was painted in the familiar De Stijl palette of primary colours - that is, black, grey, and white. However, it was later changed to resemble the paintings of Piet Mondrian when Rietveld came into contact with this artist's work in 1918. Rietveld joined the De Stijl movement in 1919. The chair currently resides in the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio. It features several Rietveld joints.

A short story how I came to the design
So today I received the final pieces. During the last weeks I had to change the design several times. In general the design is scaled 1:2. This is scale is very handy because 2/3 of alayer is exactly the thickness of the seats. So I can use the brick 2x2 as reference. At first I designed the chair on bricks 2x2 only. This didn't work out. the model collapsed over its own weight. I couldn't even bring in the seats.

Finally I changed the horizontal beams to be able to reenforce them. Today I had to fit in a technical brick 1x16 to carry the middle floating vertical beam. So after a few weeks of trying it is finished see the pictures. As this is my first project I find the results promissing. Finally the model consists of a little less than 1000 pieces.

Next project is a model of a Mercedes-Benz sedan w123.

Great model, I love it! I saw the 1:1 Lego chair in the flesh (or, plastic) a few years ago and I think that one could be improved. This one looks better.
