An entry for the Brickarms battle vignette contest

Our pursuit of the Skywalker twins had been unsuccessful for weeks. It seemed that their dangerous magic’s include the ability to open portals between worlds and this alone allowed them to stay a step ahead of our tracker, Legolas. He was furious at losing a quarry. I prefer good, clean science to their dark arts and I too longed to deal with them for their atrocities. It was only the decision to employ the dimension hopping technology developed with the Dwarves of Moria Laboratories that enabled us to follow them beyond geographical pursuit.
With my team assembled we waited and scanned for the signal that would betray the Skywalker’s presence. It was only hours before I locked onto their next trans-dimensional jump and sent us spiraling after them with the push of a lever.
Within an instant of our arrival I knew for certain that we were no longer on Middle-Earth. The twin suns in the sky illuminated a harsh landscape split by an uninviting black river. We had alighted on one bank opposite a gate where the twins were waiting. They wasted no time in attacking with their fell magic. I have no idea how they knew of our chase, but I ordered Aragorn in to battle as they cast dark spells at us. To make matters worse, the dimension hopping apparatus was pouring smoke out. I suspected a quick withdrawal was out of the question and gestured for the Hobbits of the eleventy-first Shire marines to form a defensive perimeter
The evil seductress Leia cast something into the river and waving her staff, summoned the very stuff of the dark water up as great tentacles. One of these struck with the speed of a cobra and skewered a brave hobbit clean through his chest and lofted him into the air. The little marine, later identified as Corporal Peregrine Took, was still twitching as Leia cast flames towards him. She smiled and I shuddered, but looking around saw that our forces were all hard pressed.
Luke had thrown white fragments on the ground. Where they hit, foul skeletal creatures with misshapen skulls crawled from the earth and marched on our troops, attacking with archaic weaponry. Gimli, our heavy weapons operative, responded with the usual Dwarven doctrine of overwhelming firepower. This had little effect.
Seeing our forces in dire circumstances, Aragorn and Boromir crossed the river while Legolas employed the hoverbike to take to the air. Aragorn immediately joined close combat with Maul, the twin’s tattooed manservant. Silent, he easily twirled silver blades in each hand. The other henchman, a masked monster known as Vader, leaped impossibly to intercept Legolas with a great polearm. Reckless Boromir fared badly. I am sorry to report that, rushing at Luke, he was cut very nearly in two. Nobody could survive that. The blood….
I dragged my gaze away and admit that I then feared for all our lives. Checking my own sidearm, I frantically began repairs to the dimension hopper….
My first ever attempt at vignette building (contests generally give me a chance to try something new), it’s been a fun experience and I’ve learned a few lessons that should help in future – I may even scrape in a second entry! I’ve tried to incorporate a few techniques (SNOT, blood effects, etc.) so comments are welcome.
The factions are mashed-up versions of the Fellowship of the ring (re-imagined as future paramilitary) and Star Wars (ancient oriental twist).
Credit where it’s due:
Jetbike design inspired by Quark by Nick Kappatos.
Amongst others, B.A.s are used in the jetbike construction, as lamp holders, for flame holders, as stands on the dimension hopper and of course nearly all the weapons.
Thanks everybody! It's very reassuring that people like this. Yuri - yes I would like to do some more on this theme. The contest's 32x32 baseplate rule mean't that I didn't want to crowd any more on, but Gollum-bots, a Shelob Walker and Nazgul special forces on fell beast speeder bikes were just a few of the other middle-earth ideas that didn't make the cut when I decided to stick with the basic fellowship. And there is a wealth of star wars stuff to twist up. Chris - I liked the title too, but keep an eye out for my 2nd entry which i think is even better.
Wow, didn't expect this coming. At your attempt in vignette building, this is very good. The details and the effects are just fanastic. Like for example, that tenticle going through one of the team's guys and the blood effect after it went through him. Just love that effect. The minifigs all look really nice. Especially the skeleton stormtroopers and the defense team troopers. Also, the story line was pretty good, making the Skywalkers on the evil side. Great work. ~ Ghostman :)
