FOUNDATION Class Heavy Assault Mech
About this creation
Weighing in at close to 200 tons, the FOUNDATION Class is the heaviest mech currently fielded by the Dawn Forge; heavier even than the ASCENSION quadruped due to it’s nearly twelve inches of ceramic polymer armor plating.

Also unique to the FOUNDATION is the realization of a holy grail of sorts to DF weapons designers…the Magnetic Drive Auto-Cannon (MDAC). Traditional magnetic drive weapons like railguns or gauss rifles are extremely powerful and accurate, but their relatively long loading times and massive power requirements make them better suited for support roles than frontline combat. The MDAC, better known as the “Mag-Driver”, combines the power and accuracy of a large railgun with the rapid firing rate of a traditional auto-cannon.

The breakthrough came, appropriately enough, in the form of a revolutionary magnetic chambering system that requires almost no moving parts, making it fast, supremely reliable, and scaleable. Operating at full capacity, each of the FOUNDATIONS Mag-Drivers can fire a 6kg iridium alloy rod at a velocity of 4km/sec for a kinetic energy at the muzzle of 48megajoules, and can do so at a rate of 120 rounds per minute.

By way of comparison, the real world M1A2 Abrams Main Battle Tank can fire the M829A2 APFSDS round which has a 4.7kg penetrator that travels at 1.68km/sec for a muzzle energy of 6.6megajoules, and does so at a rate of 6-8 rounds per minute. And no, Chris, Mark, Lee, Dennis, etc., I don’t want to hear about your 4.7kg penetrators…

Of course, powerful electromagnetic drivers such as these require enormous amounts of energy to function, so the FOUNDATION has been fitted with a massive fusion reactor, the largest ever to be mounted on a land based vehicle. Despite this fact, the Mag-Drivers are still generally fired in only 5 – 10 round bursts in order to avoid completely draining the capacitors that power them.

Mounted on either side of the mech are two AI controlled 35mm gatling guns. These weapons are essentially the same as the one carried by the ICON Class Command Mech, the only difference being the extended length barrels added to increase long range accuracy.

Rounding out the weaponry are eight 220mm rocket tubes and two 50 kiloton tactical nukes.

The FOUNDATION is the first Dawn Forge mech to seat two people; a pilot and an engineer. Though not called for in the original design specs, the scale and complexity of the various systems and subsystems required the addition of an engineer, freeing the pilot to concentrate fully on the task at hand. Of course, the FOUNDATION follows the current DF mandate of avoiding glass or plastic canopies and windows in favor of a fully drive by wire system. The actual cockpit is located deep within the turret superstructure in order to further protect the occupants.

This absurdly awkward picture was only included to demonstrate how the weapons can move. Please, never look at it again.

This particular FOUNDATION is attached to the 3rd armored division (as evidenced by the orange and white badges), and is in fact the legendary unit “Megal’s Butcher,” piloted by the equally famous (or infamous) Major Judith Tynan and her engineer, Corporal Susan Huck.

“The Butcher” received it’s name during the conflict with warlord Darius Megal on the shores of Hudson Bay. A beleaguered third armored division was cut off and pinned down by Megal’s forces, when Major Tynan rallied the troops and lead a desperate charge. Mag-Drivers blazing, Tynan’s FOUNDATION almost single handedly broke the enemy’s ranks, turning the tide of the battle, and leveling Megal’s citadel with a tactical nuke. The coup de grace came when Tynan sniped the fleeing Megal from a distance of over six miles, incinerating his APC and putting an end to the conflict.

“Who’s the stiff?”

“Some guy the Commander rescued during the Vancouver Op and seems to have taken a shine to. Get this…he’s an accountant.”

“You’re kidding…right?”

Whew! That’s more silly sci-fi BS caption writing than I’m used to. If anyone is wondering, yes, this is the mech from Brickworld. It’s received a few additional tweaks and changes since then because a couple sections felt a bit underdone to me, but I guess it’s pretty much there now.

Some higher quality pics over at flickr or brickshelf (when moderated), and as always, thanks for looking :-)

Many people have asked about the worm gear joints. They are simply two of these put together, one with a worm gear on a standard axle and one with one of these on another standard axle, and put together so the two axles are positioned perpenducular to each other, so turning one will rotate the other.

My brother and I calculated that if there was that much kinetic energy, for every round you fire, your poor Foundation-Class would fly back 23 meter/second, and 120 rounds per second? Uh, oh! P.S. These are real calculations. Update (As of 7/25/2010): Cool mech! I used the Foundation-class' design for my Titan-class, still looking fat, though...

My, isn't it great when a less-than-pleasant comment can generate a little "After-Shock" activity? I think I've already commented on this thing...twice maybe. I tried to read the 9-year-old physicist's comment that sparked this whole reaction, but all I could see was "blah blah blah COVETOUS blah blah blah FULL OF ENVY blah blah blah PLAYA' HATIN' blah blah blah" Hey Justin L: P.P.S: Get off our internet.

Oh, pleh. Who needs rapid-firing railguns when you've got miniguns on the sides anyways? The front guns can just be slow-firing cannons (like tank guns) and the miniguns would be the anti-personnel weapons.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I got a similar comment of using little boy and fat man atomic bombs analogies on the weaponry of a puny mech I made! Gotta have some imagination, folks! If they were to be built as real, there would be a whole lot more R&D and testing behind the scenes. And the stats wouldn't be revealed 'coz you be just spyin' yo! Hehe ...

  June 29, 2010
Quoting Justin L. You're SUCH a good comedian! That "Revolutionary Magnetic Invention" of yours wouldn't work. I'm sorry, but how is that going to work? My brother and I calculated that if there was that much kinetic energy, for every round you fire, your poor Foundation-Class would fly back 23 meter/second, and 120 rounds per second? Uh, oh! P.S. These are real calculations. P.S.S. For a better description, try doing the physics first.
*sigh* The recoil issue is resolved through the use of a synthetic mass generator, a device I explained SEVERAL YEARS AGO in this MOC- http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/28224 It’s called science FICTION kiddies…get over it. P.S.- Just a thought, but if you enjoy LEGO, perhaps you should spend more time honing your building skills and less time worrying about other peoples imaginary MOC descriptions. P.P.S.- It’s P.P.S., not P.S.S..

  November 21, 2009
I have to say, I don't really like the nukes... they look out of place, and you don't give that much power to 1 Mech. That being said, the guy below me is wrong... nukes are designed so that almost NOTHING can make them pre-detonate... so I don't care what you hit those things with, they aren't gonna go BOOM!
 I like it
  November 3, 2009
Bah. I hate to say something bad but there are things i don't like about this mech. The positioning of the miniguns isn't logical. Why would a mech's near-to-primary weapons be five inches from the mech? I also don't like the nukes. Consider... If one bullet hit a nuke, boom. There goes the foundation mech and about another three mile radiation damage circle, not to mention the second nuke. As for the weapons themselves, these are awesome. The minigun is different, i still can't figure out how its done, and the hoses as ammo is cool to. The bumpers are cool too. Whatever you made them out of. I think the positioning is awesome, and the proportions are good too. Just to be fair, i will give it four-smilies and leave it at that.
  November 3, 2009
Legs: These are great. The worm joints i still can't figure out but the look cool. I can't judge the mobility considering i don't have the actual lego. Is the thing poseable by any chance? The feet are good too
  November 3, 2009
Body: This is my favorite part. You can manage to put all these insane amounts of details into your lego that only true builders would take the time to notice. The vents and random stuff worked really well, and i am glad you included it. Everything positions nicely.
  November 3, 2009

For those of you who didn't get to see this in person at Brickworld, you really have no idea how this dominated the diorama (which was also fantastic, Brian). The DF mechs seem to be getting bigger and bigger, soon they're gonna be so dense they'll just sink through the ground. Anyway, another spectacular build, I can't wait to see what your gonna do to top this beauty!

Quoting kitty slayer I've looked at this 3 times now, and im baffled. What are the big rail guns made of? It looks like one continuous piece but i cant seem to figure it out. Little help would be appreciated.
Hovercraft bumpers.
Quoting Lee Jones So how about that Hagrid's beard anyways. Lee.
Oh, I'm gonna find somewhere to work it in...
Quoting Chris Livermore DUDE this is AMAZING. all of your Dawn Forge stuff is incredible! ive got one question..... where do you get the pieces? are they custom or did they come from regular sets? please get back to me =] Thanks!
Bricklink
Quoting danny morgan It's really great to see a new creation from you Brian! I'd say this is the best ever Dawn Forge vehicle. How much did it cost to get all the parts from bricklink? (asuming you did get the parts from bricklink)
I really have no idea. And for those who asked about the worm gear joints, I listed the pieces up top.

Quoting Blake B. Why's everyone a girl here?
All DF mech pilots are female. Almost...
Quoting Chris Phipson "And no, Chris, Mark, Lee, Dennis, etc., I don’t want to hear about your 4.7kg penetrators…" Really? Are you sure? Of course Lee just posted his a couple of days ago, but the rest of us... Brilliant Mech Brian. I was totally blown away by this at BW and still am. Not sure why you posted this though? It's not even August yet? You sure you want to blow your one post a year this early in the season? ~ Chris.
I say I don't want to hear about your 4.7kg penetrator, and you come back with something about "blowing my post?" Nice, Chris.
Quoting Sebeus I Nicely done, It took some time for me to figure how you made the long black guns and I'm still not sure, are those hovercraft pieces ? Anyway it's a brilliant mech, great job
Yep...hovercraft bumpers.
Quoting Nate (Panda) Estimated build time?
On and off over the course of a couple months. As for number of hours, I have no idea.

Whenever you need to use kiloton to measure the force of something on an object you know its huge. Especially considering the fact that the missles arent even its main weapon system. Another outstanding creation by the mech master.

Quoting Mike 3579 This is about 80 levels of EPIC BADASSERY!!! Whew, glad I got that out. This thing must be heavy. What joint system did you use?
Yeah, it is quite heavy…the joints are all of the worm gear variety, probably the only type that could actually support it.
