M1A2 Abrams Tank (LDView version)
This is my virtual LEGO® rendition of the M1A2 Abrams Tank, the MBT (Main Battle Tank) of the United States military.
About this creation

This is my virtual LEGO® rendition of the M1A2 Abrams Tank, the MBT (Main Battle Tank) of the United States military. There’s been plenty written about the real-life vehicle and its amazing capabilities, so I’m not going to be redundant about it here.

The inspiration for this MOC:

Anyway, it took me a couple days to get the LEGO design so that it would look as close to the real thing as I could make it, and several more work-hours to get it built. 590 pieces went into the construction of this model. I tried my hardest to take great care to replicate the details of the real-life tank as closely as I could. I was quite pleased when the final version turned out as well as it did.

Obligatory Star Wars quote: “You know, sometimes I amaze even myself” – Han Solo

I’d like to dedicate this model to all my friends who have or are currently serving in the American armed forces. They are the heroes who keep us safe, and if not for them, I probably wouldn’t have the freedom to build the stuff I do.

* As usual, the program I used to build this is LeoCAD.

I then converted it to an .ldr file and rendered it with LDView.

For info on contacting me about permission to use the design or obtaining a copy of the 3D file I made, see my homepage.

Update:

I got this tank reviewed by MOCer legend Keith Goldman, and this is what he had to say about it:

The Good:
-You sweated the small stuff, and it shows: The reactive armor plating, the protective railings on the side and rear, the distinctive shape of the main gun and the remote operated weapons. Also, the treads (and back-side slat armor) are a real stand-out.
-Your LeoCAD / LDRAW rendering work is very nice. I would like to expand on why it is nice, but I have very limited experience with those programs and rendering MOCs in general. I have enough experience, however, to know it isn’t easy and can be just as time consuming as building with regular parts. Probably the best compliment I can give the model is that it was immediately recognizable as an Abrams.
-The overall presentation is one of the best I’ve reviewed. Your text is both informative and clear, with a personal anecdote about friend’s experience serving the nation. You also provided an excellent example to others by including not just a link but a photo of your inspiration. This last “Good” detail may seem like a small thing, presentation is a big part of building within the community and it is nice to see a builder who puts both time and thought into it.

The Bad:
-Although your scale is accurate, the M1A2 has a very distinctive turret shape that you don’t quite nail. You give it a good shot with those wedge bricks in the front, but it ends up looking like an older generation tank because of its blockyness. I know this is a real challenge, especially using digital media, but here is a link to one of the best examples of an M1A2, to prove that it can be done:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/madphysicist/sets/72157618711999504/
-Staying with the turret, I think you could have done a better job with the remote operated weapons and the top of the turret in general. The reference shot you included featured an armored loader’s shield, and I think you could have done more with that detail. As it is now, the top surface of the turret looks too flat and unadorned.
-Looking at your MOC in a true profile (which is always the least flattering angle for any MOC), it looks like the real Abrams is a bit longer. This could simply be the effect of the angle and the digital program, but I think it would look better stretched out a bit.

The Competition:
- Here is another link to another builder who has taken a shot at the Abrams, perhaps it will help you get inspired for V3. http://www.flickr.com/photos/zackhariah/3958509023/

The Bottom Line:
-This was a fun MOC to review because it is accurate, cool and came with a great presentation. I look forward to more, and thanks for submitting the Abrams.

Neat Abrams! It looks a wee' bit stubby and a wee' bit fat, but that's all I can think that isn't perfect, maybe you could put flat tiles all over it to make it a bit more... studless?

Quoting Mister Bones I like the design, however, an Abrams is well noted for it's sloping frontal armour. Would there be a way to slope the front and turrent a bit?
Yes there would. I intend to incorporate those details (and the other advice/suggestions I received) into the next version of the tank that I make.

Good work and a nice build mate, i reckon though that if you pulled each of those wedge bricks on the front turret out one stud it could have a nice slope going :)

yeah! good idea! I never thought of that! well, on here we SHOULD still have freedom of speech. Oh and by the way, Halo 3 is AWESOME!!!! Now here is healthcare: have you heard recently that there is a 106 year old lady who has been having chest pains? Its true! They want to take here to the hospital and CAT scan (or one of those scanning things...) and find out what's wrong. But if Obama's health "care" comes into action, he says they "should just give her Tylenol." INSANE! See??? He IS bad!

Quoting Walter the nameless person yeah, good answer (I STRONGLY dislike Obama too) I did not look at the song/lerics because I don't think I should because of the language. Health "care" comes later today. I will talk later after I get Halo 3!! (I have Halo 1 and 2 on my 360, and just beat 2, but is stuck on 1, so yeah. I never beat 1 by the way...)
Yeah, that's fine about not looking at the music video; I know some people dislike strong language, even if it is used to make a good point. Anyway, have fun w/ Halo 3 (or whatever). :) (I'm not really familiar with the Halo universe). BTW, if you want to have a private conversation about politics (or whatever) just email me; it's easier to keep track of, and we can speak our minds without having to worry about MOCpages policies. (Freedom of Speech, for the win!)

A song comes to mind that fits this discussion very well: "Critical Acclaim" by Avenged Sevenfold (A7X). * WARNING * The Youtube video that the following link goes to contains some strong language that may be unsuitable for younger audiences to listen to. If your parents/guardians have no problem with this, go ahead and watch the video - I just don't want to be the target of hate-mail and lynch mobs from concerned parents' groups. * YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED - I ACCEPT NO LIABILITY * http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54W7QvProIk Here are the lyrics for those of you who can't/won't watch the video: http://www.lyricstime.com/avenged-sevenfold-critical-acclaim-lyrics.html * NOTE TO THE MOCPAGES ADMINS * Please don't go all FCC on me and ban me from this awesome site for this post. I was merely referencing a song that I feel is very relevant to the discussion. If you bother to read some of my other MOCpages posts (the ones in my own words), you'll see that I'm usually very well-mannered.

Quoting Walter the nameless person yeah that's true (me again lol), but I don't necessarily (spelling?) think it is the military's fault. Some higher up; like Obama. Men and women serve and risk their lives so they can come home and be treated like trash by liberals. That is all true. I do not care for Obama. I will talk about his health "care" next.
I'm not saying all high-ranking officers have their heads up their rears - but enough of the influential ones do to make it a major problem for the average grunt. As much as I dislike Obama for his liberalism, socialism, lies, incompetence, arrogance, and simply being an unqualified, ungenuine, and unpatriotic useless person, not all blame for this problem can go solely to him. You do realize that usually the President actually has very little say in policies that affect individual soldiers' and veterans' day-to-day lives.

I once admired America's military, before I learned some cold, hard truths. Don't get me wrong, I still have great respect for the men and women serving this nation in that way - they are the heroes that defend our freedoms with their lives. What I have a problem with is those paper-pushers in Washington whose idea of heroics is defending their budget. They don't see military personnel as people, all the bureaucrats see is statistics. If you ask me, it is many politicians who are the true "necessary evil" in this country. I'm not saying that you shouldn't join the military, but the truth needs to be known - we owe our heroes that much.

When I came to America from Russia at the age of 8, I still remember looking out of the window of that Delta jet flying over NYC harbor at night, and seeing the Statue of Liberty lit up in all her glory, the torch of freedom shining brightly. 13 years ago, that still meant something, or at least I thought it did. I must admit, the hazing I suffered at school from xenophobes who hated me for being foreign led me to not have a very patriotic outlook for my first 7 years in America. When the tragedy of September 11th happened, I began to realize just how much the forces of evil in this world hate what America is supposed to be. I started becoming more interested in America's military, even expressing my want to join when I became old enough. Though I was unable to join for medical reasons, looking back and seeing how my friends were mistreated by the higher-ups, I'm glad I wasn't able to.

And now the liberal regime running this country is profiling returning veterans as "potential right-wing extremists". Well what did they think would happen when you train a person to be a soldier, and then toss them away like an empty wrapper when you think they're done? People fight for their rights in whatever capacity they are capable of. Treating heroes like their sacrifice means nothing, or worse yet, "a necessary evil", is a proven way to get those heroes fighting against the very government they had previously served. These are not isolated incidents. When you go to bed tonight, remember that over 131,000 veterans all over America are sleeping in the streets of the country they served. America's heroes deserve better than that.

It's the same thing the Army did to my friend Malcolm Richards, who served in Iraq, and was traumatized by the horrors of war he saw there. They refused him medical help, allowing this veteran to suffer physically and mentally until it drove him over the edge. Malcolm became a political activist who wanted justice to be done to certain policy-makers in Washington who are responsible in a large part for defiling this once-great nation. Though he never hurt anyone, Malcolm did maker a fake bomb-threat at a Pewaukee, WI police station, demanding a gun and a squad car so he could go arrest certain congresspeople. Yes, I know Malcolm's plan sounds irrational and crazy, but people need to realize that the post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that had been haunting his mind since Iraq greatly impaired his rational decision-making ability. The Army didn't even care enough to get him a counselor to see - they just used him as a grunt until he could no longer serve in that capacity and then threw him away. After serving a stretch in prison for the fake-bomb threat, Malcolm tried to improve his life here by going to college to learn to be a financial consultant. Of course with that felony on his record, no American company would hire him. Malcolm recently left the United States to go back to India, where he had previously been for a missions trip. He is now happily married there and works for an Indian investment firm.

Quoting Jack Fonchezzz wow even better than the first. You don't even know how cool that would be in real life. And is it minifig scaled?
Thank you! :) And since I have been playing with real LEGOs since early childhood (way back when I lived in Russia), and have built many real models with them, I have a pretty good idea that there would need to be a new sub-entry put into the dictionary for the word "epic", lol. And oh yeah it is minifig scaled (for the win)!

Very cool - I've been a fan of Star Wars since childhood, and I've played some Halo before, and thought it was pretty neat. And yes, I am a follower of Christ as well. I consider myself non-denominational.
