In my mind the Swallowtail is a Spaced-up version of WWI dogfighters.

About this creation

This is my first MOC since pulling the LEGO out of the closet, dusting off the box, and obtaining a couple new sets. Classic Space was my childhood obsession, so no matter how I try to branch out I always gravitate back towards things with wings and space suits. In my mind the Swallowtail is a Spaced-up version of WWI dogfighters.

A few details: the main idea of this ship came from the 6 Expert gears: the two visible in the front and two in-line in each engine assembly. I liked the "pointy" motif and the rest of the ship formed in my head quickly. I wanted a design that was aggressive but had a certain grace to it. As this is my first build in years is was also a chance to work on adding more detail.

Interesting facts:

The 6 Expert gears are ca. 1980

The gunner (forward position) and pilot (rear) cockpits are built around the red 4x5 plates with the 2x2 cutout and small fenders attached. No idea what to search for on bricklink or peeron to find it, but I've got a few of them. They were the foundation of several 80's era 4-wide vehicles.

most of the dark bley as well as the red guns came from my latest purchase (for parts) - the Star Wars Twilight kit that was on sale at the LEGO store.

While I like the overall design of this particular vessel, I kind of feel like the cockpit area needs to be redone considerably and that you also need to get some different types of windows or windscreens for it, too. Also, it would look better if you added some tails above the engines and if you made it face the opposite direction, otherwise it reminds me of a more open air and two person version of a Naboo Starfighter.

Hi Jesse - Thanks for stopping by and taking a look! The Naboo Starfighter similarity was completely unintentional, but that being said, I really prefer the orientation as it is. The open-air cockpit does make this more of an atmospheric craft, but my inspiration for the design was a combination of WW1 and WW2 fighter craft - hence the small windscreens and engine-mounted weaponry.

Thanks! I just got those recently as part of the Cargo Copter (http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?S=4995-1) set - and I thought they looked tight flipped around as intakes.
