A description of a little known combat tactic (with illustrations!); don't look if you don't like long write-ups.
About this creation
Tank Desant, derived from the french word meaning 'to disembark', was a military combined arms tactic based on infantry riding armoured vehicles.
Used in a disastrous engagement in the Spanish Civil War, where the russian vehicle crews couldn't communicate properly with their passengers, the tactic was improved and used with moderate success on the Eastern Front in the second world war, again by the russians.
It was included in textbooks, and was used to quickly move infantry close to the objective, where they would leap off about a mile short and walk the rest of the way.

It was, of course, dangerous, as the troops were and are unprotected on the top of a vehicle which tends to attract heavy weapons fire.
It was used in the Second World War by the Soviet russians, (and probably, on a limited basis, by the germans) in the Vietnam War by Die Amerikans, in Afghanistan (the OLD Afghanistan, remember? The russians took over and the amerilanders gave weapons to the Taliban to get them out, which inspired Mr. Bin Laden who is now pestering westerners in general?) by the russians, and in one of the Chechen wars, again by the russians.
Ah, dose rooshuns.
It was used in those enviroments because troops were afraid of landmines and rocket launcher attacks, which the opponents used regularly. The early APCs were not especially well protected, so troops favored breaking regulations and riding on top rather than risk getting caught in a veritable deathtrap.
In modern times, it has just about died out as a tactic because all the advanced militaries use APCs and IFVs that give all-round protection.
And, of course, because modern armoured vehicles use both explosive-reactive armour, which makes an explosion in the event of a missile attack which in turn makes infantry nearby die, and gas-turbine engines which make the back deck very uncomfortable for anyone on it.
_________________________________________________________________________________________
The APC used here, which is actually a scout vehicle, will not be posted in full for a while, because I plan to use Space Police bodies on the crew; it's difficult to get SP parts when the sets haven't been released yet in your area, isn't it?

How about we forget all that happened and do as it never happened? Nice tank by the way. |

Very nice description of tactics. I would prefer to walk alongside the vehicle than inside, because of the armor is not as thick as any tank. But its an APC, and it has to protect itself with its guns and all sorts of counter measures... |

The first to do it was the local jester who thought it would be a great idea to entertain the troops by juggling on top of a cannon on the front line like the fool they pay him to be. Otherwise, nice lesson on obolete tactics. |

Great history lesson. There would be more awareness of this tactic if most people employed in it didn't perish in the process. Sorry, this was a tasteless target of humor on my part. You summed it up well.

Ah, yeah, ok. I see it. However, the German Panzergrenadiers were the first to do it. You might have mentioned that though...
The British did, actually. I've got a pic somewhere of a bunch of gropos riding on a Mark IV. |

Awesome tank!
Thanks; it's actually a scout vehicle, but it does look a little too APC like. That's what I plan to enlarge it into eventually, an APC. IFV, technically. |

Nice article, very well written :) I'll comment on the MOC as soon as you post the rest.
Thanks; that'll have to wait a bit, I'm afraid: I plan to use SP3 bodies for the crew, and the new Space Police sets aren't out in NZ yet. |

If I had money to burn in such a manner I'd spend it on more grey parts: thank you for pointing it out, but I'd rather wait for the sets to arrive in the local area so I can expand other parts of my collection than just the minifig box. |

Looks good so far. The wheels look a little out of place and tiny in my opinion. And the tank looks pretty good. I do really like the turret and the soliders. Maybe you should add some more colors to it. Good job 4/5
Well, it's actually a scout vehicle. I feel it looks a bit too much like an IFV, so once I buy the SP bodies for the crew and post it, I plan to enlarge it and give it a twelve-fig capacity. |

Very Nice I think it would be fine without greebles. You are right a single sheet is harder than more than one that's why I spread a white unused bed sheet on my chair, it's much easier. and you can add different color towels on the white sheet to add moreeffect like for this MOC a brown towel will do It's also handy for making water like in my Latest MOC (check it out when you have time). What am I even saying? Great creation, love the weapon o top and keep in touch~Nicky (BTW what ever happened to our MOC-off?)

Very interesting. I love the APC, too.
Thanks, but it's actually just a scout car; looks a bit APC like, though: the trouble with SNOT vehicles like that is that they tend to be rather tall, so this is about right for an APC but it can't actually hold a fig who's sitting up. |

could use some more greebles ;) especially the front looks very flat and unspectacular...and how about using a single sheet of paper as an all white background? looks much better than this strange box you got there... ;)
The vehicle is intended to be smooth and armoured looking; I figured greebles would defeat the purpose. Also, the strange box is my photography setup; it's freestanding, so it's a lot less work than a single sheet would be. I appreciate your feedback, though. |
