About this creation
I came, I saw, I... barely said a word. Had a lot of fun, though.

NOTE: Captions refer to the pictures below them.

- - - - - - -
Touchdown at O'Hare on Thursday night. I truly understand the word "humid" the second I step outside.
I arrive at the hotel late after getting hopelessly lost in what was repeatedly referred to as a godforsaken hellhole.
I enter the convention floor and BOOM. The place is enormous.
Dave and Stacy Sterling's TotLUG layout (plus Heather's beach house). Dave was the first person I met there. He saw me in the hall, immediately dropped the box of train cars he was holding, shoved two little polio-stricken crippled children out of the way to get to me, and started humping my leg while screaming "MINE! MINE! MINE!". Or, something like that.
Dennis Price looking very serious as he tinkers with Dave and Stacy's layout.
Brian Kescenovitz. I tried to covertly take pictures of all familiar builders. A few of them caught me, and beat me senseless. Take a look at Brian and guess who won that fight.
Little Alex exiting a lighthouse.
Matija Grguric placing his sigfig in Dave and Stacy's layout. Cool dude, that Matija. Awesome Croatian/surfer accent.
Sean Kenney and Dave Sterling. If you look closely you can see the exact moment Kenney realizes I'm taking a picture of him. The scars will never heal. Who carries a tire iron around with them; seriously.
Lee Jones, a man with a mind so dirty, how he became a family doctor will forever be a mystery.
Whoosh.
SigHeather and SigJason taking a ride on the J-Train.
Apparently the fire used to grill your burger is included on the bill; luckily, though, it's on the house.
Mark Kelso's Korner:
I know; what a pompous ass, right?
Matija Grguric's mind-blowing Umjetnicki Paviljon. Such detail; it's crazy. And he got it here from basically the other side of the world. Unbelievable.
A clandestine group portrait during a speech. Starting at the end of the row: Dennis Price, Chris Phipson (who seems to be aware of my camera), Dave Sterling, Stacy Sterling, Brain Kescenovitz blocking Stacy's face, Sean Kenney, and Matija Grguric. Heather Braaten was sitting next to me, and unfortunately didn't make it into the picture, but something tells me she'll be relieved by that.
I was bored. I took a picture of my shoes.
Brian William's extraordinary Indiana Jones vignettes. The guy knows his lighting; the bastard.
From left: Lee "Dr. Love" Jones, Dave Sterling, Abner Finley, Matija Grguric.
Perhaps my favorite layout at the con: the Jurassic Park layout.
And it lights up! Awesome.
On the way to lunch with Chris Phipson, Lee Jones (in his traditional Messiah pose), Mark Kelso, and Matija Grguric.
Some of Adam Reed Tucker's fantastic buildings. To take a sledgehammer to one of these would be a boyhood dream come true.
I'm gonna say it's Ed McMahon.
Fabuland Star Wars dio by Mark "The Fabuland Fairy" Larson.
The level of detail on this thing is mind-blowing.
Nannan Z's Fortress of Solitude. Met him, shook his hand, dazzled him with card tricks. The usual.
Kescenovitz's Ephram's Garden.
Kescenovitz's Sandpiper.
Pirates of the Bermuda Triangle. One of my favorite layouts at the con.
The room dims for the World of Lights event. Gropes and fondles run rampant.
Lunch the next day. French dip. Spectacular.
Had lunch with, among others, Sean Kenney. Nice guy, and one of the fastest talkers I've ever heard. And I think he almost made me foot the bill. What the hell, Sean?
The Northern Illinois Lego Train Club's layout.
Arkham Asylum. Makes me want to revisit my own.
Boot on the Joker's truck; genius.
Tyler "Legohaulic" Clites' Matrix dio. Met him too. Probably would've had a longer conversation with him had I not been so utterly socially retarded.
The line for Pick-a-Brick.
I need to try diagonal roads more often.
Damn it all, why didn't I think of that?
After taking this picture I was coincidentally and literally pulled away to dinner with Heather, Kelso, the Sterlings, and Abner.
And this is where we went. Had another French Dip. Refrained from slurping the au jus; had people to impress.
Another one of my favorites:
Chaos at the Lego store raid. Long story.
Public day. Madhouse.
Stacy Sterling's Zoltar machine.
Vaguely phallic.
God, I love the Claim Jumper. This burger's name: the Widowmaker.
The Xandegars' Buzz Aldrin. Dave Xandegar has the Voice of God, by the way. Velvet smooth.
I saw that on the internets!
Another entry for the "Why didn't I think of that?" prize. God, that's awesome.
Time to tear everything down.
And with that: it's over. Far too soon.

But goddamn, was it ever fun.

See you all next year.

Nice overview of the event! I've just seen this. Excellent coverage of MOCs, and of course our "gang". @Sean - yes, you are a fast talker! I am too myself (so they say), thought I still can't talk so fast in English. ;)

If I saw myself in one of your "covert" photos of "familiar builders", I'd consider myself a marked man. God am I glad you haven't tagged me yet! I gotta be careful at the next con.

Great photos! Am I really a fast talker? I've actually never heard that before, but I wouldn't be surprised...

Great recap Alex. I'll try to refrain from humping your leg next year. The excitement of seeing you just got the better of me. Judgement...out the window. :-) Thanks again for coming out to hang with us in the Midwest. See you in October!

I think Alex and I ate at the Claim Jumper three times while we were there. That has to rank among my all-time favorite chain restaurants. Any place with an 8 layer, two foot tall cake called the "Motherlode" is a-ok in my book. :)

That's who I was thinking it was. But I only knew him from Will Ferrel's impersonation.

You know, there's like 5 of us doing coverage of this and I don't think all of us together were able to get everything! And just think, next year... the ENTIRE Westin is OURS MUHAHAHAHA! ~ Chris.

Ya know, for a guy who says very little, you've managed a very accurate portrayal of the con...quality over quantity, right? Anyway, thanks for the show and tell, some great shots!

It totally should have been a month long to be able to see everything. BrickWorld is the Smithsonian of Cons. You cannot see it all.
