This is probably late middle ages, like the 1400's. Guns weren't invented until the late 1300's. By the way, I would play D&D, but do you have to paint the figures? If yes, then I probably can't play, because I'm no good at painting.
There is no painting required in DnD; the figurines are just for enhancing the visualization of the gameplay. Honestly, I don’t even use the figurines (don’t have the spare cash); I just use Microsoft Power Point to set up a battle grid and then use small icons and shapes to represent the characters. If you want me to, I can send you some links to the game rules to get you started; also a link to the forum site I use for play-by-post games.
