2009-0504 - Digital Space Probe Launcher
A recreation of Classic Space 6870-1, the Space Probe Launcher, using updated pieces from Lego Digital Designer.
About this creation
The Space Probe Launcher was my first Lego Set, and it set of a lifelong love of Space and Lego. I often keep a physical copy on display on my shelf or desk because of its revered position in my personal Lego history. With the recent addition to LDD of some classic parts (those air horn thruster things - called "Steering Nozzle" in LDD), I have now been able to recreate a fairly close approximation of the set digitally for all to enjoy! For those unfamiliar with the origianl set, information about it can be found here.

Here is a comparison of the original Space Probe Launcher and my digital recreation. Because some of the classic parts are not available in Lego Digital Designer, I had to improvise in several areas of the model. Overall, though, the shape and feel of the set, I think, has been retained.

These three images show the cab of the vehicle. The main parts I had to replace here are the wheels and the hinge connecting the cap to the trailer. Since the hinge I used is only available in black, I made the wheel axels and the entire bottom of the model black as well.

The Launcher portion of the vehicle presented the biggest challenge in this recreation. The classic hinge piece used in the original lays flat when closed (lies below the level of the top plate), whereas all of the newer hinges in LDD sit just above the level of the top plate. This made a launcher closely matching the original impossible to construct. After many attempted "studs up" solutions, I finally had to go with this design, which despite being SNOT, matches the shape and feel of the original model fairly well.

The Space Probe itself, which I see as more of a low altitude planetary transport, was fairly easy to reconstruct. The newer 8 stud long wings in LDD are slightly different than the old style ones, in that they do not have the "corner" at the back that the classic ones do, but beyond that, the digital probe is nearly identical to the original. Since the thrusters are available only in grey in LDD, I changed all the black pieces in the original for grey.
