Venator Class Star Destroyer "The Legacy"
Venator Class Star Destroyer "The Legacy"
About this creation
The "Legacy".
Construction time; 20 hours
Pieces; 4567
Size;122 studs long, 66 studs wide, 37 studs high.
Weight; 11.7 pounds
After 20 hours of tough construction, constant swearing, and determination, "The Legacy" is complete. This moc was without a doubt the most difficult I have ever done. It presented problems not previously faced. Ex; connecting the side panels, strengthening the frame, and parts constantly falling off). However, I am satisfied with how it turned out. It could've been better, but, so could Kelso's Invisible hand....well..... maybe not the Invisible Hand.....umm....look! A monkey!
Anyhow, without further a do, I present you my greatest moc-"The Legacy".

Starboard hanger.

Engines. This was definitely a difficult design concept. I couldn't make the engines and fin weigh too much, or they would sag. However, the engines and fins had to be accurately proportional to the rest of the ship. After about 45 minutes fiddling with the engines and fin, I solved the problem.

A nice little view of one of the smaller engines. I was going for a retro design, turned out quite nice.

Details on the main engines. The engines are connected to the fin by a flat 2x8 pieces. This piece supports the engines. Without, they sagged horribly and fell off. So, although it's not movie accurate, it had to be done. Plus, I decorated 'em, so, you can't even really tell they're there.

The underbelly hanger. It's not my Venator's strong point, but, it'll do. (I would've spent more time on it, but, since it would only be in one pic, I figured that complaints about it would be minimal)

One of the two stands. These are extremely sturdy, and are very easy to move into places where overhead weight presented a problem. (Yes, these are the stands from the UCS ISD)

Front view. (Yes, I know the insignias look blocky, however, at this scale it was difficult to achieve a circular shape without the insignias looking blocky)

Close up of the bridge. Although small, it has lots of details in there.
Those round 1x1 pieces sticking off the side are escape pods. For how small the dual bridges look, they are actually about 40 pieces each.

A little scene I came up with while taking pics. A mini Vulture Droid narrowly avoids being hit by the Turbolaser's laser. Up by the bridge, a Vulture Droid is pursued by a Jedi Starfighter.

I hope you guys liked this moc. I spent a LOT of time on it, so, you guys better like it, or i'll have to go all "IMA FIRIN MAH TURBOLAZER" on you. Anyhow, thanks for checking out my Venator.
Now, what to do next.........

The Legacy has been scrapped to make room for another creation. See it HERE

Quoting Dylan McCool I like it! How much did it cost? I invited you to my venator-class star destroyer contest, so please enter it. I made a venator to. You can see it at http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/390152. Nice model and I like your clone-wookie base!
It only cost me a lot of time and work! I don't spend any money on ordering parts, I only use what's available to me. Thanks for the kind remarks! And this has long since been scrapped, does that matter for your contest?

I can't believe people commented for you to make a studless design! I barely have enough for the insignia XD However, your insignia could be rounded by taking 1x1 off each of the corners. Very nice model though.

Well I can respect that. Home One is much better than this. But, you have to take into the account the ability of the builder, the pieces they have, and the amount of money and time they have to spend on the creation. I will admit; this creation does not deserve all the smileys it has. However, I worked hard on this and take great pride in it. Compared to many other Venators on this site, this one is quite good, but definitely not at the level of any Thomas Benedikt creation. I'm happy with how it turned out. Popularity isn't a big deal to me; I just post for fun. I'm sorry if you are disappointed with this. I'll do my best to do better next time. Happy building-Tom
  November 2, 2009
I dont like this creation . First its blocky ,the bridge doesn,t look like the real one .Im saying this because it has got more smiles then the mon calamari build by Thomas Benedikt which is 100 better.People like this because it,s just color shame.I dont say that to show that my venator is better but when i open the second page of most popular creation i see something that is not so good

Quoting Lord Lego 436 I personally like Fed's more. Big isn't better. In this case the ship looks blocky and bulky with all of the STUDs showing. In Feds it looks nice, but in yours all of the STUDs make it look, well, blocky. Nice shape, though.
Well, what do you want me to do? Go out and order 3000 studless pieces, just because one person didn't like the studs showing? Why does everyone get so upset if something has studs showing nowadays? Here's the thing. If you don't like my studdy, bulky Venator, go make one the exact same size and dimensions and make it studless. You will see why I opted not to use studless pieces.

It's big I'll give you that, and the engine and greebles on the sides are cool too. However I'm gonna give some constructive criticism here, the bridge looks kinda tacked on, and unproportional, it just doesn't look right to me, especially the side view. Maybe incorporate more snot into it to snazz it up a little. Everything else is pretty good. Again just trying to give something to make it even better.

Quoting General Boba Yoda yea how did you do that by scratch?
Good question. To start, I took apart my UCS Star Destroyer. I used pieces from that, including other pieces I had, to create this behemoth. Also, I looked at hundreds of pictures of venators online and on Mocpages to give me a good idea. Then, once I had the shape down, it was pretty simple. This question is kinda hard for me to answer, unless you want a really long, detailed answer.

Quoting Alan Crisp Rather than point out places of improvement (I am sure that all artists can see the faults in their own creations and do not need critics), I will instead ask, how did you go about with the structure of the SHIP? I assume you used technic parts, put then it looks like you used hinge bricks for the contours of the mid-line. I know that using hinge bricks like that can create some terrible headaches when you rely on them for structure. I also assume you used a lot of the same structural methods as the UCS scale ISD... but that model did not have nearly the shape nor that heavy fin and protruding engines. So how did you go about it?
Well, it was a very complex and grueling process. The first thing I did was reconfigure the framework. That wasn't too difficult. Next came the 4 panels that make up the ship's hull. this is where things got difficult. The top panels were easy to build and connect via magnets. The problem with this though, was the panels created an enormous amount of sagging on the framework. So, I went through and regutted the framework and added more supports. Then, came the bottom two panels. The first one was extremely difficult. It took me nearly two days to come up with a good design that worked. So i made the other panel and connected the panels via magnets. These required 5 magnets each. And for some reason, the lower right panel decided to stop holding itself up, so I had to add an external brace. Next came the bridge. This wasn't difficult, just required thought and lots of little pieces. The bridge section is seperate, it actually comes off. It balances on top of the two top panels. The fin was difficult. I had to try multiple fin designs to perfect it. The first ones were too heavy. The ones after those were too small. So, after about an hour of messing around with stuff, I connected technic pieces to the inner frame of the ship, and began to build on from those pieces. Thus, the fin came to be. The engines were simple, they just weigh quite a bit, thus making everything sag. If you look at the pictures, you can see the back portion of the ship has a noticeable sag. So, I hope this answered most of your questions.

Quoting General Boba Yoda i was wondering if you used lego designer or if you made it by hand?
I did it by hand. I don't like using Digital Designer for big projects like this, especially because this has a TON of technic pieces. Also, doing it by hand is more fun! I did a lot of trial and error on this, and had a blast making it!

Very good questions. Well, to start, the main structure of the UCS ISD is what I used for this. However, because of the fin, the structure sags terribly, if you look closely at the pictures, you can see the sag on the fin. I attached the fin to the main body with technic pieces. The bridge actually rests upon the two upper plates. I attached the plates with magnets, lots of 'em. And, the ship is hollow. I hope that answered some of your questions. I will post a picture or two of the framework.

Nice work, and in such a short period of time! My Biggest ship, the Dynonochus, took 40 hours a week, for a month to build, while working a full time job. It must be an addiction, lol. Yes, I will add you to my group, "Only big spaceships".

That is a mighty undertaking, constructing this star destroyer. I have had similar problems producing models over 100 studs long, you keep having to go back to the super structure to strengthen it. The result is ace.

Well the ship is awesome BUT there is a small thing that you could do for it. You could make the control towers little larger (like put it 2x then a 1x and details to the towers side) and and a little shorter. Thats the only bad thing i could say and rest of the ship is just TOO BEATY to watch :D. I hope that you will make a diorama of this ship.

Hey Tom, I was looking at this lately and I thought the size isn't really that bad it actually looks good with it being bigger. But I still kind of think you could of worked on the front just a bit. And I have to admit that I was jealous about your venator... I was just kind of upset and frustrated because nobody liked my venator so I toke out all my anger on you, and I sorry. It's not right for me to say that this is bad just because you didn't like my venator so I hope you can forgive me. And I wish you the best of luck on your upcoming series.

Quoting Cindrealig jedi that is sweet, though i think the guns and the comand bridge look a little small for how big yours is. Y in the world would u count the bricks?
I sort of lost count at 4000. 4567 is an educated guess, its probably around that. Give or take a little. And I counted 'em because whenever there's a big moc, people always ask how many pieces there are. So, I wanted to have an answer.

I agree with you on the front. It looks a bit unfinished. I'm most surprised with all the comments about moving the bridge back! I thought people would complain most about the engines, but, everyone loves them! Anyhow, thanks for admitting. I had a feeling that had something to do with it. It takes a big man to confess such things as jealousy. And, it's not that I didn't like your Venator. For someone at age 11 (you are 11, right), a Venator is extremely tough, and you did well for your age. The thing is though, i've seen some INCREDIBLE mocs from you, so I was a bit disappointed with your Venator when I saw it. Anyways, thanks. And my series is set to kickoff Memorial Day weekend. It's pretty good. But I'm not really digging the shape that the front has it needs to be more pointed and I think it wasn't necessary to make it this big. The sides could use some detailing too and the little ramp leading up to the bridge is too plain looking you could of used some dark gray with it. But the engines look nice though and the bridge does too. But there's just some things that need some work that's all. I'm not trying to be mean I'm just giving out my opinion. This is a great MOC, but if you want to improve it: (in order of importance) 1) More greebling. 2) Larger turbolasers. 3) The front part of the hull looks wrong for some reason. I don't really know why. 4) The symbol for the Open Circle Fleet needs improvement. Try removing each stud at the corners of the red square. 5) The engines look wrong, although I do understand you were going for a retro look.

Great job!! And done in so little time Genius using the magnets, btw. I think that you should move the bridge back and the Venator won't need any more changes.

Only thing I'd change is the front, close it up a little, and the bridges, the connections to the towers are too narrow.

Nicely done, it's very big, I suggest you add some more detail though, its nose is a bit 'open' and it looks a bit plain but the design is great, good job

Quoting Kir Kanos Kalinka fantastic wonderful job the engines are the best ive ever seen on a star destroyer im going to go look at fed right now. yea the nose could use some work and i understand about the hull thing. this is really huge! exactly how many and what peices did you order from bricklink and how much did it cost?
I ordered 50 pieces. 16 Magnets (that's how I attached the side plates) 10 slant pieces (the pieces that go into the slant up to the bridge tower), and 24 other pieces that I thought I might need (some dark red pieces, clear pieces). I don't remember the cost though.

Wow! That is so big and cool and giant! I think that its one of the best on MOCpages! Did you finish the front(it looked a little unfinished)? Otherwise it is just really impressive!

Amazing!! I love the insignias, and the engines are really nice too! But the bridge tower thingies are a bit too blocky, and the center (between the 'wings' and the whole front nose thing) is too wide. But very nice work! I don't think it's much of a contest for the MOC-Off...

Quoting Michael Sloper @Andreas I'm just giving out my opinion. I know mine isn't the best on mocpages but I know what I have to edit on it and I'm working on it right now. And I'm not jealous about his venator! I'm just giving out my opinion.
Can you send me some pics of it? I'd be happy to help you with it!

Quoting Michael Sloper So You understand I'm not trying to be mean right?
Ya I know. I expected criticism.

  April 28, 2009
Quoting Michael Sloper It's pretty good. I'm not trying to spam your page.
That's understandable. I understand about the front; it needs some work. And for the sloped part that goes up to the bridge, I tried 3 ways to get that right, and that was the best one. So, that one stays. And, I planned for it to be big. And actually, it was originally a lot bigger. This is only about 3 feet long, at one point it was 5'6". But that one didn't look good, so I made it smaller. Anyhow, thanks for the tips Michael.
