I'll start by saying how much I love nether rays. They are hands-down my favorite creature in World of Warcraft. I just got my hunter a nether ray pet and now I'm preparing to work for a nether ray mount. I thought it would be neat to make one out of Legos just to see if it could be done, and to give me something to keep me pumped for the hard work that a nether ray mount requires. Enjoy my bricked out nether ray mount!
About this creation
Compared to the real thing, I think my Lego version looks better from the back than the front. You can see that I used the bricks off of Count Dooku's speeder to make the back. To preserve the illusion, pretend that those metal plates aren't metal plates. They're, um... Battle scars! Yes!
Here's a picture of a real nether ray for you to compare. I admit, my version isn't completely up to par with this one, but I may make improvements as the right parts show up in my bins.
Propped up on a stand, this is how a nether ray usually looks when it's in the air and not moving. The tail droops down much lower.
Here's the nether ray coming up to say hi. The face is the one area that I found VERY difficult to adhere to the real thing. There were just too many teeth to fit in such small of a space. I have a few ideas that I may try out later, though. A version 2 may make its way onto the site. If you look under its belly, you can see the glowing gland that keeps it in the air. I am so glad I was able to fit that into this model. It was really the last thing I had to do to finish.
This is a mount, so it needs a saddle for people to ride it. I figured I would make a little hole in its head for people to sit in since minifigs can't straddle across it like a Draenei could, and the end result is more than I was hoping for at the start.
This heroic minifig is here to demonstrate the mount capabilities of the nether ray. Minifigs actually look very well suited to using this as a mount.
My frost wyrm lined up against my nether ray. Given the noticable difference in size, I think it's safe to say that the nether ray would win in a fight.
Thanks for checking out this particular MOC, as it's one of the ones I enjoy most.
P.S. Nether rays are awesome.

Very nice. Mocpages needs more WoW MOCs, and this adds to the collection nicely. It needs to be a bit wider just behind the head, but other than that, it looks pretty spot on. Nice work! |
