AB-11E Arbalest
About this creation
I aimed to create a BattleMech that belonged to the BattleTech universe and this is the result. It is my own original design, influenced mostly by other BattleTech mechs. For those of you who are parts-conscious, most of the parts used in this are from the EX-81 Lightning.

Update (3/27/09): New photos again, when will this ever end? Updated machine gun, legs, and torso.

Update (3/26/09): Even more new photos. Added two machine guns below the waist and jump jets on the back and legs.

Update (3/25/09): New photos! I modified so many parts I don't know where to begin. Not many structural changes, I mostly improved color coordination. The laser on the upper right shoulder was removed, legs bulked up, improved torso joint, missile colors changed, railgun modified, and torso weapons accented.

The AB-11E Arbalest is a heavyweight BattleMech weighing in at 75 tons. It is manufactured by Ceres Metals Industries, a neutral entity that will sell to any faction willing to pay their prices. The version pictured is one of 6 prototype models. In simulations it has proven to be extremely effective over medium to long ranges but it is vulnerable within short range.

Its main weapon, the XR-7 prototype railgun can be used as direct fire or artillery. The effective range on this weapon is easily greater than 50 km but loses accuracy over extremely long distances. The ammo box right beneath the gun stores a large quantity of 15mm tungsten rods.

The missile rack carries two different rounds of rockets. The white warheads are armor-piercing explosive rounds and the yellow warheads are incendiary rockets.

A view of the rear, nothing too greebly. Notice the red exhaust coming out of the jump jet and waist.

Minifig pilot inside. The Arbalest has no windshield and relies solely on a variety of sensors and cameras to aid the pilot. Concealed on the frontal armor are two flamers for those pesky close-range encounters.

The cockpit area is revealed with the frontal armor removed. The weapons on the side of the cockpit are Heavy AC/4's, developed by Ceres Metals Industries and influenced by a similar weapon used by Clan Ghost Bear.

The front armor encasing taken off from the mech. The back shows the mechanical and electronic controls for the mech.

The genuine leather seat upgrade will set you back approximately $20,000. The materials have to be imported from Earth which is always a hassle to ship.

Quoting Dali Zheng Now I remember why I don't have XBL: my X-Box 360 is broken, and then there's that monthly fee.
The Xbox being broken I can understand, but I don't think you need XBL gold to chat with people on live-- I've talked with friends without. Many games, like halo 3, even allow limited online play without a gold subscription (Gold requires monthly payments, Silver is free). Many of the games I've played online with Phong were custom, which in Halo 3 is accessible with Silver-- no matchmaking is allowed, but it's still fun.

Oh well, maybe I'll just remove weapons, because after all, the ALX-97 Ruiz was for the Civilian Mecha Contest. It was meant to be a race mech, but I couldn't help myself. Weaponless and me don't mix too well. I should post two versions when I finish it, so the weaponless one may qualify as a Civilian/Race mech.

Quoting Phong Chang Wait, this uses the same right arm weapon design almost. I thought I was original with that blade. PS: The mech still isn't finished.
I wasn't completely original with the right arm weapon either... I got the idea from Chris deBree's RP-12 Rail Tank (http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/42761) and I just scaled it down.

WOW, a real combat mech from you, I磎 impressed. The colormixing is creating a nice camo sheme (was that meant to be so?), also I love it磗 weapons, cockpit and the legs, ty the way, I never thought such a weak connection, like you used there, could keep such a mech in the air, how have you done that?

This is actually not my first non-humanoid mech. My first was the very first MOC I posted here which I deleted because it was terrible, Phong probably remembers it though. I updated the colors and now it has more dark grey in it. I also updated the torso connection so it is much less wobbly now.

Quoting Areetsa C I meant that it was 'decent' in comparison to things like Mark Neumann's 'Shogun' at http://mocpages.com/moc.php/7621. I don't know about any AC4's or SRM8's, though; maybe they're newer than the rulebook I use.
You're comparing apples to oranges. Unlike my Arbalest, the Shogun is humanoid, huge, technic, studded, and not BattleTech inspired. It's like comparing Bionicle to Lego System.

I'm resisting to make a Flickr-style comment here, so I will just say that this is awesome!
  March 25, 2009
Quoting Dali Zheng I mixed old and new grey. Oddly enough, I think it adds a bit more realism and texture to it. I couldn't use snot for the top of the cockpit, since it has a hinge attached and it opens. I noticed the little spacing in between slopes and it bothers me but nothing I can really do.
I agree about adding texture, and to be honest I don't mind. However, there are many builders on MOCpages who think it should usually be with only one shade of gray, not a mix. Also, I didn't realize that about the cockpit, so sorry if my comment earlier seemed off-putting.

Heyyyy, this is real nice. I like everything about it, except the feet. But that is only when I look at them directly. When seen from the above shots, they look great. Maybe they just need to seen in person to be appreciated. The removeable seat and the missle pod, are both really nice. Good work all around. This Mech has a nice shape and look. Actually, this was a fine choice to model, kudos to you!

Quoting Patrick "Packie" Chambers Excellent work! That railgun is amazing. Great shape and nice work on the legs. Don't worry about Areetsa and his comment. He's just a stuck-up little kid who goes around this site putting other peoples stuff down. As far as talent goes, you're in a whole other league. Great work, looking forward to seeing more mechs of this style from you! Peace - Packie

Quoting Nowhere man Great mech! My own forrays into this area have never been that notable (I still posted them tough). This is really a great mech. My favorite part (as is the case with most of your creations) is the legs and feet. This is, like I already said, a great mech. Keep on building ~ Nowhereman
Thanks, the feet took an extremely long time to figure out. The railgun was fun to build, and the whole leg except for the feet was a fast build. The torso took the most time to build, I think. I'm still not 100% satisfied with how this mech is built.

Only decent? I want to see your mechs...

Quoting Areetsa C Decent, but not quite CBT-ish in shape; Age Of Destruction, perhaps. Heavy AC4? I think you mean the Ultra AC5. So, I'd assume that for gameplay purposes it would carry an LRM-20 on the left arm, with both standard and Inferno ammunition supplies, and the 'railgun' would be represented by a Gauss Rifle; same basic weapon, you know. Best not to get into an argument regarding CBT with myself; I warn you, I have little online life and have no scruples about digging into my rulebooks regarding Battlemech construction. For instance, does this have an XL engine? Does it mount Ferro-Fibrous armour? Does it have Endo-Steel internals, and if so, where did you get the extra space for it? How fast is it? How much armour does it carry? Ammunition supplies? IS base/Clantech? CASE? MASC? (although why you'd want Myomer Accelleration System Circuitry on a 75 tonner heavy I don't know...)
I know it is not canon, but the Heavy AC/4 is a Clan weapon in canon, I suppose the left missile rack would be a SRM-8 (again a Clan weapon), and the railgun would most probably be a gauss rifle. It is merely inspired by the BattleTech universe and I never claimed it to be a canonical BattleMech. I guess if you want to be technical, it is a custom mech based on Inner Sphere/Clan tech with an experimental rail gun. It uses standard armor, internals, and standard fusion engine. 10 tons of armor, 60km/h top speed, 80 railgun rounds, 1 ton of flamer fuel, 32 AC/4 rounds, and 24 rockets.

Quoting Toby Heinemann Very good overall, especially if it is (as it would seem) your 1st 'blocky' mech. The overall shape is very reminiscent of BattleTech (at least, what little I remember of it). In my opinion, SNOT for the cockpit paneling might make it look just a tiny bit better- I'm not a huge fan of the tiny 'lip' that LEGO sloped bricks have when placed one atop another.. A quick question: Did you mix grays on this, or are some of the pieces just faded?
