Metal Gear Solid REX V.2
REX V.2 is an updated version of my original REX, including a new hip design, new neck, and new mounting points for the rail-gun and sensor dome.
About this creation
It's been a few months since I unveiled REX, and since then I've tinkered with a lot of details and done complicated rebuilds to try and make the hips better. I tried to keep the overall look the same; though not perfect, I think the original still looks pretty accurate overall. Also, thanks to a dedicated fan, please go to the bottom of the images to find some very helpful instructions on how REX goes together.

Since I didn't really want to try and replace/replicate all the old pictures with the 'new' model, I decided to settle with some nice pose shots since I finally have a decent camera and tripod (to see all the images, go here ). Plus I made that big background just for REX, and I want to dismantle it since it's always getting in the way. So, here we go:

I added a lot of studless plates to the outside of REX, mostly on the lower legs. On the sides of the legs, I staggered the plates and threw in a few oddball pieces to make it more interesting.

The darker shots were done with a single overhead light, and make for a nice atmosphere. I added some technic springs to the talons; this way, they can be useful to help REX stand on carpet.

The hip guards/shields on the original were admittedly lame and not well designed, so I put more effort into them and they look a lot better now. I used some 1/4 circle bricks to get them to sit at an angle.

Both the rail-gun and the sensor dome use mini-fig torsos for rotation now. The dome is light enough to not need any extra help, but the rail-gun has a pole on the inside to act like a friction-extension and keeps it from drooping.

A quick gif showing the difference between sitting and standing.

Since I was all set up for it, I decided to make a little movie and show how easy (or hard?) it is to make REX stand:

The movie also shows how REX's head can move forward thanks to the flexible neck. It's something I wasn't sure I could add, but turned out to be surprisingly easy to do and works very well. It also adds a lot of pose-ability.

A lot of these pictures I included only because they look good...

I made the stilts thinner and added more detail to them at the same time; this way, when standing, the lower legs don't look as chunky.

If you compare the new hips to the old, you'll see that the rotation point has been moved closer to the middle of the thighs, rather than at the inside. This helps keep the upper edge of the thighs from hitting the rail-gun/sensor dome, and also made it possible to double the friction-extensions on the inside of the legs.

Since the actual hip joint is farther out, the legs can spread into more dynamic poses now, though the small feet still make it difficult to find the right balance point.

The rail-gun and sensor dome arms were rebuilt mostly to accommodate the mini-fig torsos, but they both sit farther to the outside and give the arms more range to move.

I wanted to replace the smoke-launchers on the knees, but I couldn't think of a better design that would still look as good. Oh well.

You can just picture Snake running for cover.

The rail-gun is longer now, and a little more accurate I think. The new joints make poses like this a lot easier to do.

With this I tried to imitate some official art done for Metal gear solid:

But I couldn't get it quite right. Not because the head is angled slightly wrong, but because it's impossible to put the legs like that without a stand. Oh well, it makes a good wallpaper.

Now YOU should be running away!

Just kidding. Another good wallpaper candidate.

All in all, the changes I made helped a lot. However, there is still one thing REX doesn't have that I would have liked to include. In the original game and in MGS4, you can see that the lower section of REX's legs can extend/contract/act like shock absorbers. I was going to try and add this, but decided against it since it could compromise REX's ability to stand. It's possible I'll attempt to add this feature later but honestly I'm a little sick of fiddling with REX for now.

Thanks for looking and I hope you enjoyed everything. If you see an image you'd like to have a desktop version of, then let me know with a comment and I can put a link to a desktop version above the desired image.

As usual, REX is not for sale, BUT a very helpful and dedicated guy named Erik Rief took it upon himself to make a parts list and recreate REX in Lego Digital Designer.
To get all the files, click this link to download a zip file.
Make sure you open the Read Me.txt file for more info. In addition to this, I took some pictures of REX's insides so it's easier to see how parts of him go together. If you decide to make your own copy, all I ask is that you give me credit for the design, and Erik credit for all his work in recreating REX. Good luck!

@rags narock have you considered a lego cuusoo project. especially mg rex and ray.. cause these are awesome, it would make them widely available and you get a cut of the profit, it's tiny but hey let's not complain here.

I am a huge fan of both the artist, and the peice. it takes a very patient man to spend time to design and then fabricate a functioning replica of a video game monument. I have been drawing ( terribly i might add) REX for years but always wanted something tangible, but never had the funds until now, and rather than buy a model or figurine, whats better than someone admiring something like that and responding "I built it.", when asked "where on earth did you get this?"

D/Led the specs for the Mark II REX for the digital designer, and ordered all the pieces. I haven't finished (got the head, radome, and railgun, but haven't done the legs), but.... Good god is this thing epic. You sir, are insane, obsessive, and waaaay too much of a fanboy. I salute you. You are awesome.

AMAZING work! i'm a huge fan of the metal gear franchise and was stupefied by this masterpiece. what's making me sad is that i have the newer LDD 4.2 and when i downloaded the instructions/models from the link provided, every major component (head, thigh, upper thigh, etc) gave me an "improperly placed block and was removed" message. and looking at the way the components were rendered, a lot of pieces were moved around/out of place or missing altogether-- more than just one... wondering if you happen to know any way to fix this old-to-new LDD version compatibility issue? i'm dying to build my own REX! thanks!

Ok this build is epic man! I do have a problem with finding pieces I need can't you just buy the pieces from the LDD for (If it's Lego REX) hundred dollars? Also how did you make a very close replica?!

Edit: I assembled my one with a couple placeholder axle&balls just to try it out, and yep, he totally can stand. Rags, have a manly internet handshake. I dunno how you came up with the design, but it's crazy how just a couple axles can support this massive thing. :P So mine is basically done, he's got a couple cosmetic differences from the original, due mainly to me not being very picky about using Dark Bluish Grey instead of Light Bluish Grey. XD I'll try and get a few pics up (dunno if I should put em on a MOC page since it's not my design?) but I love it. It has been equal parts fun and frustrating putting this thang together, so thanks man for the excellent design and instructions. :3

Quoting Tim [DRX] I'm midway through my build - got the Railgun, Radome and 1 lower leg + stilt done. I have noticed a couple... I dunno how to put it, but; it feels like I am running low on parts already. I get the horrible impression that the inventory does not account for there being 2 legs. I can't say with absolute certainty because I haven't started the second leg yet, but it definitely feels like I'm short components for the second leg. :/ By the way Rags, that Radome design is awesome. Had a lot of fun putting it together. :D EDIT: OK, I can confirm for sure there's a shortfall of a fair few parts, mostly smaller components, stuff like technic pins and axle connectors; for example - technic 1 x 2 1 finger on one end, axle hole on the other. There's 3 in the inventory, and you need 3 on the Radome...and 3 on the head. :/ I'm making do by placing more orders as I go, and pillaging from my poor technic models! That said, I don't mean to say it's a bad job, I know how much work Erik must have put in to this, and without it I wouldn't have got as much done as I have! When I finish, I'll try and write up an updated inventory. :3 BTW; Rags! The head of REX I've built feels very...fragile. Like the edges of the top half of the beak all come together very tenuously, like there are 6 surfaces barely holding each other together. Is that how it's supposed to be, or have I screwed up somewhere? :P
I'm glad you had fun with the radome, I did too since I wanted to try something different. Anyway, the 'beak/nose' is quite fragile, you don't want to try and move the head by gripping it. As long as you never apply a lot of pressure, it should stay together just fine.

For everyone wondering what version of LDD to use, I can give you some hope. I just downloaded V.2.3.20 for PPC Macs here: http://ldd.lego.com/download/ and I tried opening all the LDD files. None of them gave a 'missing pieces' warning, only that the files 'could not be price checked or uploaded to the Factory Gallery.' For windows users, I found v2.3.19: http://www.tucows.com/preview/611088 but I don't know for certain if the files will still work. If this older version works for you, please leave a comment so others will know.

@Patrick I'm trying to build Ragnarocks' REX too, right now! ;D The Brickstore files should be accurate. I hope, anyway, cause I've been using it to buy parts. :P I think your confusion is; Brickstore gives an inventory, and you can convert that inventory into a wishlist for Bricklink.com - and use that to buy the parts. BUT. Bricklink is all independent sellers, and no one person is gonna have all the parts you need. I have placed about 20 orders trying to collect all the parts I need for REX. ;D That said, the Lego Digital Designer files are a problem; they're not totally compatible with the newest version, they omit parts - which could be a big problem... I've tried using older versions of LDD, but I always get the omitted parts warning. If anyone can track Erik down, we should ask what specific version of LDD we need! ;D

Quoting Patrick P. Hi there, amazing work you did... I really appreciate this version. Unfortunally I don't get it with Bricklink and Brickstore, in addition to that, there are some parts which the program doesn't accept... Is there a possibility to get to know which programversion Erik used or to get an actual list? Or does anyone know how it works? Or maybe it*s possible to reach Erik to ask him for a newer version... Maybe I'm a bit to stupid to get a working partlist and manual to build it for my brother's 20. birthday... Just 4 months left -.- I would really appreciate if someone could help me :/ Thankful greets from germany, Patrick
I believe Brickstore's database is automatically updated, your best bet is to just look for similar parts to replace whatever the program says is outdated/etc. I haven't used Brickstore myself to purchase/part out anything so I can't really give you much advice beyond that. If I can get in contact with Erik I'll ask if he has any updates.

This is a creation that is put on picture very, very cool with some serious lighting and shadows. These are professional photo's and the perspectives are very super too! The REX looks like it looks at you to go berserk and what I especially like about your pictures is that the ones with more darkness are the coolest to watch at. Not that the others are bad, they're superb...but the darker pictures bring more suspense and more mystery around the REX, that makes it so dangerous and bloodthirsty. This is something like a REX that will look at you when he's driven you into a corner from where it is impossible to escape, so he slowly approaches you to attack you as slowly and as painful as it can get. That the image that I have about your "massive!" creation.

There is no words enough to tell you how awesome this rex is. Best one i saw ever. But, seeing rex at metal gear 1, and later, at metal gear 4, there is somehing which not mach with this one. When he is up, he is not in so high place. Also, legs dont have to be so vertically, and a little more horizontally. But that could become so hard cause to make him staying up, you should to equilibrate the weight along the main body. Again, it is just an excellent creation

Thanks for the compliment! To make a gif, you can use any number of programs to convert an image file to that format. But to make an animated gif, you need a program such as photoshop that will let you add frames, specify the speed, etc. As always, google is your friend. Hope that helps!

Make sure your LDD program is up to date, you might need to go to http://ldd.lego.com/ to get the latest version. If you're having trouble with the zip file, you should try either http://www.winzip.com or http://my.smithmicro.com/win/stuffit/expander.html. ----- If it still doesn't work for you after all that, I'm not sure what the problem is, I just downloaded the file myself, unzipped it and opened the LDD files and they all worked fine.

Quoting Toby Heinemann Why? It'd be nice to see you make a RAY.
It's not that I don't want to, I've thought about it quite a bit. Someday when I get really inspired with how to do it I will, but I certainly don't think anyone should wait on me if they want to try it for themselves ;)

NOOOOO!!!! ... *sob*, *sob*, *cry*, lol, jk... it's too bad though... I'm sure that a Ray from you would be just as much a work of art as your Rex (even at a smaller scale like mine!)

Why? It'd be nice to see you make a RAY. I'd like to try one myself, judging as you've already cornered the REX market =). Again, very, very well done here, just as inspirational as your first one.

WOW! Your REX mods keep getting better! I know this is a design you have been working on for quite some time and it is worth all of your effort! I love those graphics. The dark lighting and metallic look of the gray Lego is very cool, great combo. The way you made this is amazing. You find new ways of making joints and odd connections. The size and look of this model is impressive. I really like seeing all the parts used on this creation. Wow man, just wow. Then again, I have mech on the brain.

I'd like to start this by saying that the Metal Gear Mechs in general are my favorite mechs of all time. REX being one of my favorite among them. Now I'd like to say that probably my favorite part about this mech isn't necessarily the fantastic details and the almost perfect shape. It's the functional details. Like being able to "sit" and stand up. I like, not just the fact that the head moves out, but the fact that it uses 4 pistons to do so. That's what really get's my attention. So great work, I'd have to say that you're one of my favorite builders on MOCpages and this only reaffirms that assessment. Keep on building ~ Nowhereman

I guess my MOC of the year vote would be going for this MOC here. Man, I just canīt belive how easy it is for you to change in walking mode, move the head down and so on and so on. I abslolutly loved your REX V1, but now, the V2, I just canīt find the right words...

Quoting Knoll grey my new absolute favorite thing in the world, you deserve an award. i feel bad about my microscopic-by-comparison skills, if you stop building legos i think the world should end. are you planning on making Metal Gear Ray?
Geeze, I leave for a few hours... anyway, there's never any reason to feel bad about starting small, everyone does. As for a RAY, I've thought about it, but for right now I want to concentrate on some other ideas. Thanks again to everyone!

Positively AMAZING. Metal Gear REX is my favorite mech of all time, and you have more than done it justice with this. Even the original version was stunning, but this one is that much better again. I especially love the attention to tiny detail barely even featured in the game- like the 'backpack' with nukes. 5/5, though I wish I could give it more, especially since I drew upon the original so heavily for my own projects. By the way, thanks very much for your comments on my work.
