I am Lego

Welcome to my MOC page! My name is David and I'm am both a big Star Wars fan and an AFOL "Adult fan of Legos". As a boy growing up in the mid-70's and 80's I was hooked on all the classic space sets. Man those sets were grrrreat! After a few years absent of my Lego addiction in the early 2000's when I thought I was too cool for Legos, I finally returned to my hobby with an early Star Wars set in 2001. It's been non-stop Lego love since.

I've got just a couple of larger MOCs behind me. Now my current project is a full size R2-D2! Cool huh?

This project began in early 2013 with a lot of research. I had two goals with this build. First and foremost was accuracy. I didn't want to build a blocky, bricky R2 that stumbled over all of R2's subtle details. In fact, how likely could I build an R2 that didn't look like Lego at all? Still to be determined... My second objective was making sure I would finish what I started. So far, my second objective remains on course!

So began the R2 design research. The dome and body design pool kept my mind racing many nights, not liking any of my design ideas. They were all too "bricky". How do we get a smooth R2 body?. After much deliberation (with myself) my final "ah-hah" moment was when I decided to build R2's body via one long contiguous wall of bricks. I tested my idea on few rows completing R2's entire diameter. Low and behold, the smooth wall pattern worked. I was able to form a wall of 1x2 bricks in a staggered pattern, building a "wall" so to speak. Then I wrapped the wall around on itself to create the cylinder pattern. By golly it worked!

Then I just needed a solution for the dome. Just because I can. I'll save the details on the final design pattern for the dome until the end of this build. Stay with me until my last brick and I'll break down the dome design if you haven't figured it out by then. :)

Keep watching my page as I roll-out new pics every month or so. Thanks for stopping by my site and never stop building.
