J0N0TR0N1C SYSTEMS MOCs are not based on movies, comics, games or any other intellectual property ; they are just original minifig-scale designs (OK, some are based on official LEGO group sets).
My MOCs tend to fall pretty squarely into the "Classic Space" or "Neo-Classic Space" genre. One thing that always bothered me in official sets was the lack of airtight cockpits and cabins (who want's to fly across the galaxy with their legs or face exposed?). So call me anal, but I like to make my spacecraft as airtight as possible.
I like studs and I let it show. They are part of the character of LEGO and part of my style as a builder. I'm not bashing studless builders -- it takes a lot of creativity to work that way. My mind just doesn't do it, and to me keeping the studs helps retain that authentic Classic Space feel, even if the rest of the design is very unusual or contemporary.
My MOCs usually originate as a series of rough concept sketches. From there I work in marathon sessions to complete the design, taking occasional breaks for food and social interaction only when I get stuck.
