(I had permission from Michael to create this, although it was a while back)

Here you can discuss opinions, predictions, and thoughts about the trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug!

Here's the YouTube Link:

I think it looks epic! Smaug looks okay, but a bit different than I pictured him. Also we see, Beorn, Bard, Legolas, and Thranduil for the first time! I'm so excited!

What do you guys think???

Smaug looks a lot different than I pictured myself. It looks a little odd is what I am trying to say. Probably a lot different than most invision when you think of Smaug.

Those are my thoughts exactly. In the trailer he looks as if he's smiling, which made him look even stranger.

I really do hope they do not add Legolas in to much, because he was not really in the book. So I hope it will be ok, BTW was that big animal thing Beorn?

I think so, it looked like they were in a big hall, so probably. From what we see of him, I think he's going to be awesome!

Yeah. Well Gandalf said he is a strange fellow, so I could see him kinda attacking them. =D

That was wicked cool! I thought it was awesome that they were climbing up the statue and yes, Smaug did look a little strange but them in the barrels looked very comic. Looks like this will be a good movie!

Oh boy, this film looks like it's gonna' be epic! I like the vast amount of scenery shown throughout the trailer. I definitely think The Desolation of Smaug will be more visually mind-blowing than An Unexpected Journey. Legolas and Tauriel look awesome. As the films are already clearly not going to very accurate to the book, I'm excited to see all the new content Peter Jackson has added (both from the LOTR appendices and his own imagination). It'll be exciting to have bits of story where the outcome isn't already known from the book. Although in all honesty, I'm still not super keen about Azog. There are my two cents on the trailer! :)

I think they didn't know that it was Beorn in bear-form and thought that a huge and agressive creature wants to enter Beorn's House.

That is a good theory. It really didn't make sense to me either. I am glad that they didn't cut Beorn from the movie like they did Tom Bombadil.

Even though Legolas was not mentioned in the book, his father is, and so he was almost certainly there, so I a, quite happy with his inclusion.

I don't know, I think it would be interesting if Legolas had a romantic relationship before going with the Fellowship. It would really help to develop Legolas as a character. Those are just my thoughts and in the interview she never said whether there would be a romance with Legolas but she did kind of hint at it.

this is kind of a random thought, but as I've been thinking about why the orcs and elves are fighting, and what's going on throughout most of the action sequences in the trailer...and I've come to a conclusion. Let me know what you guys think of this, and if it makes sense?

So Azog and his band of orcs have tracked the dwarves into the forest, but the elves get to them first (Legolas captures them). So, as time goes on and the dwarves are locked up, Azog decides to assault the Halls of Thranduil (and as they approach, a guard points it out at around 1:07 in the trailer). Then Bilbo hears word of this (maybe Tauriel helps spread the word? Because I feel that she'll take the side of the dwarves and convince Legolas to do so as well.) So then Bilbo hurriedly helps them escape like in the book, but the it will be more intense due to the oncoming orcs. Azog is seen scaling the battlements in the trailer, and the fight ensues, yet somehow they find out that the dwarves have gotten away. And at this point I have two theories:

1: the elves continue fighting the orcs, while they both chase them down the river trying to capture them, almost like they're competing over who will get the dwarves

~or

2: the elves realize they should help the dwarves, with the help of Tauriel's opinion (who is captain of the guards supposedly), and they run along the river protecting the dwarves, but the dwarves don't realize they're trying to help.

They are both interesting theories. I think either of them would work but I don't even think that battle should be in the movie.

I like to think that Dwarf-women don't actually have beards but they put on 'disguises' when they travel abroad (very rare) and hence people think that Dwarf-women don't exist. And besides, look at this picture: http://lotr.wikia.com/wiki/Gimli?file=Gimli_as_Young.jpg

I think it is supposed to show how long they have known each other and that they know exactly what their friend feels at the moment.

As for Kili and Tauriel, I think Aidan Turner said that Kili at least "likes" Tauriel, but that he knows that there will never be a relationship. That's everything we know so far...

See, I'm OK with that. Tolkien said that Gimli thought Galadriel was beautiful, so obviously SOME Dwarves like Elves. I'm OK with it as long as it doesn't slow the story down and make the movie bad.

I'm glad with the inclusion of Legolas and the introduction of Tauriel. If P.J. is going to make up stuff (a LOT of stuff) I guess I have to get used to it. I just watched the Unexpected Journey again and I give it a 6 out of 10 (the Fellowship getting a 9, The Two Towers getting an 8 and the Return of the King getting a 6 as well). I still want to yell at P.J. if I ever meet him for ruining the only chance someone will probably get of making a perfect The Hobbit film. That said, it was pretty good and I bet the Desolation will be better (though Smaug looks goofy, IMO)

I pretty much agree with you on everything here. The Hobbit, I think it deserved a 7 or 8 but meh. Fellowship: 8 or 9. They would have gotten ten if Tom Bombadil and Glorfindel had been included. TT: Yeah. ROTK: 6, really? I thought they did a really good job on it, even if they did leave out the Scouring of the Shire.

Yeah, Smaug doesn't look like a typical dragon. I think they tried too hard to make him look 'special' and not like a 'normal' dragon so now he looks odd. So sad. Though I'm excited to see how Radagast plays out in the next movies. It will be interesting.

They DID do a really good job on RotK but it was too split up. I liked how the books followed Frodo and Sam for a long time then switched and followed Arry, Legos and GimGim. I'm just a really tough critic; I've given movies zeros before :[ And yes; Bombadil and the Barrow-Downs, Glorfindel and the Elvish hill thing, and the whole flight from the Nazgul in the Old Forest being cut from the film is why the Fellowship didn't get a 10 from me - otherwise it was perfect.

Oooh and Tauriel is so pretty :D I love Evangeline Lilly

I think the reason why the Hobbits' adventures in the Old Forest and the Barrow-downs were cut from the film is that they are not important for the main content of the book, so that the book can be read without them.
Though I think it was very sad, because I loved those chapters, especially the Barrow-downs.

This is awesome! Smaug looked ok to me, but less red then I pictured him. Bard looks awesome, and Thranduil seems really cool! All in all I'm now hyped for the movie, so the trailer did its job! :D

I agree. I definitely pictured Smaug looking a bit more fearsome. You warped everything else up pretty well.

The Barrow-downs was a really cool chapter. I'm actually working on my annual Hobbit and LotR read-throughs right now and just finished those chapters. (Yes I read the books every year. Third year in a row.)

I think that The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will be a LOT better that the Unexpected Journey! I am very excited to see more of the Necromancer's side-story kinda thing and see Beorn's house, Mirkwood, Laketown, and everything! I haven't read the book in a year so I should read back a bit on some parts. I do have this uneasy feeling that I'll be like "nooooo! why do you stop there!?" after I see it! So excited! :D

Not so important? That's where the Hobbits all got their first swords. :( Also, if Tom wasn't important, than why did they give Treebeard his lines? I want Tom. Now. :C *Sigh* all well.

Well, Tom is an important character, but he doesn't have a big part in getting the Hobbits to Rivendell and forming the Fellowship.

I agree. He also doesn't play any important role in the war, so it was very easy for them to leave him out.

I was never a big fan of Bombadil but I didn't dislike him either; the chapters he was in were great. I also think the Barrow Downs were very important to the story overall as it focused on the Barrow Wights and gave more of an insight into all Wights (Barrow Wights, Nazgul, Dead Men of Dunharrow).

I say GimGim because of how Jackson had Davies portray Gimli : silly and a bit dim-witted. I loved Gimli in the books.

I'm most excited for Beorn's house and Mirkwood and I think it will be great because they haven't really showed anything from either yet.

Interesting, I never really thought of it that way; I always liked Tom for who he is and those chapters because he is in them.

Yeah, he unfortunately turned dwarves into Scottish comic relief....ah well. I always loved Mr Davies's voice for being so deep and awesome and my father always had a goatee when I was younger; so I developed a theory that the bigger a man's beard was, the deeper his voice was. I still think about that from time to time and I wish it were true though.

You elves, you never understood beards. That's what separates you from us dwarves. Along with your seemingly feminine hair.....

My hair is long too though I tend to go with the 'Bieber' style if you know what I mean.

And when I said 'feminine' hair I was talking about long flowing locks like Legolas. Many dwarves have long hair too.
