Yes it is a really great book! If I'm honest I like the HOBBIT even more than LOTR, because all important races play a role in it, including the big part of my favorite race, the dwarves.

It's only 1 book :) (That's how Tolkien wrote it!) So i say The Lord of the rings is my favorite book of the 3. My favorite movie is The Two Towers extended edition.

I'm excited; it can't be worse than LotR. I know I'll catch a lot of flak for saying this but Pater Jackson could have done WAY better on LotR as far as accuracy to Tolien's story goes. That said, I still love his movies and I'm sure that P.J.'s The Hobbit will blow the other three films out of the water.

I'm sure that it will be very close to the book (except from the costumes of the dwarves of course). They didn't leave out any single character and they added a few more, so I guess they will show everything that happens in the Hobbit, plus they will show other things that happened in Middle-Earth at that time.

I watched the Rankin Bass cartoon movie many times too. I have to admit though, that the animations are not my taste and I didn't like that they left out so many details that happened (like Beorn), but after all it had the great Middle-Earth athmosphere and only that counts. I especially like the music in it.

I was very disappointed by the exclusion of Beorn as he's one of my favorite characters. and the whole chapter Queer Lodgings is great. I was also saddened by the lack of mention of Dain. I do, however, love the animation by Rankin Bass; The Hobbit, The Return of the King, Flight of Dragons, and Thundercats are all favorites of mine. To each his own, I guess lol.

Far o'er the Misty Mountains Cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away ere break of day
To seek our pale enchanted gold

I don't think that it's possible for them to be better. The story itself just isn't as good as Lord of the Rings. Sure, it's still be great, but LOTR has so many aspects that make it great, and the Hobbit lacks a few. I don't think it'll win as many awards either. Just my prediction!

I was very surprised too, and I'm still wondering what the movies will be like. I guess they make 3 movies, because they alo want to show other things that happened at the same time like "The HOBBIT" in Middle Earth.

Well besides, more movies means more for us to watch! And anyway, I would rather them make three movies for a 350 page book, and not leave anything out, than make one movie per 300 pages like they did with LOTR.

I am not surprised at all, rather, I am excited! This means that we will have less left out, and more added from what was going on in Middle-earth. Like the White Council, for example.

I totally agree. They have 3 movies now, so they are definitely able to show every single detail of the book and even more than that.

Let's hope that it will really be like you said.

I saw it TODAY and it was excellent! I posted a looong review, but MOCpages failed to post it and I don't want to write everything again. :(

We were the first people in the theater and the only ones who dressed up as movie characters. (My sister as elf, my friend as hobbit and myself as Fili. we didn't have enough time to create my father's Bofur costume, because we had to be there half an hour before the movie started) There weren't many people, so we had the free choice. (I guess most of them wait until the movie comes in the bigger theater.

There are a few things I wanted to say

-One of the first things we saw in the movie was the Fall of Erebor and Dale. The Kingdom of Erebor was just amazing. It was HUGE, much bigger than anything else we saw in LOTR. We also saw Thranduil for a few scenes, riding on an elk. He was watching the destruction of Erebor, but he didn't help the dwarves, when he saw the power of the dragon. since then the dwarves hate the elves of Mirkwood.

- Radagast is not Jar-Jar-like at all. He is a lovable character and very well out in the acting of the movie. His bunny-sleigh doesn't ruin it either.

- Interesting fact: Gandalf tells Bilbo about the Order of the Istari: "Two Blue wizards, which names I forgot" (Alatar and Pallando), Saruman and Radagast.

- The performances of the actors were excellent and each dwarf was different and awesome in his own way. Thorin and Balin had 90% of all dialogues though and only half of the dwarves were shown often enough: Dwalin, Balin, Thorin, Kili, Fili and Bofur. The others have some quite funny dialogue parts too, with one exception: Bombur. He doesn't say any word, nor is he shown very often at all.

- There is a big change regarding Azog. He kills Thror, Thorin's grandfather, but other than in the appendixes, it is not the reason for the battle of Azanulbizar. He kills him IN the battle instead and is not killed by Dain, but fights with Thorin and he survives. Then he wants revenge and follows Thorin & Co until they are in the burning trees. He has another duel with Thorin (I won't tell the rest, because it's one of the movie highlights.)

- The designs of The Great Goblin and Azog are not my taste. They look to much like if they were from G.d. Torro. Azog looks unrealistic and too much like a knock-off of another creature.

- The movie ends with the scene I told you yesterday.

- We got to see Smaug, Spiders, Thrush and a huge white wolf. And giants, who are as huge as mountains. The dwarves and Bilbo are walking on a giant's leg!!

- Gollum is awesome, as always, if not even better!!

- There aren't any important details from the book that are left out, but there are some scenes from the trailers that aren't in the movie. Can't wait for the extended edition. Here the missing scenes:
*The Bywater-market scene
*Gandalf's duel with Thrain
*Everything Gandalf did in Dol Guldur and when he was away
*Bilbo sees the remains of Narsil
*some scenes in Bag End

- There aren't any important details from the book that are left out, but there are some scenes from the trailers that aren't in the movie. Can't wait for the extended edition. Here the missing scenes:
*The Bywater-market scene
*Gandalf's duel with Thrain
*Everything Gandalf did in Dol Guldur and when he was away
*Bilbo sees the remains of Narsil
*some scenes in Bag End

AHHHHH! SPOILERS! NO! Not reading!

That bugs me, though, that Dain didn't kill Azog; Dain is my favorite Dwarf. :(

He's my second favorite dwarf after Balin. It's really bad that he doesn't kill Azog, because then he didn't do any great deeds in his life, when he becomes king in the 3rd movie.

Agreed that does annoy me,

As for the Dul Guldor they will probably put all of that in the second movie since they won't have much else to show in that one.

It was Dain's right to kill Azog and avenge his father; his cousin doesn't need a duel (but I'm sure it will be entertaining).

As for deeds, he alone looked past the gate into Moria and saw the Balrog then counseled against occupying Moria at that time. He brought the Dwarf army out of the Iron Hills to help King Thorin in the battle of five armies, too.

Well, Gandalf hadn't gone to Dol Guldur to Dol Guldur yet if the movie ends at the eagle rescue.

I got my ticket and am going to the midnight showing in a few hours! I'm seeing it in 3D as I've never seen a 3D movie and I've heard you feel more like you're along for the journey.

I got the Midnight showing tickets, but not in 3D because I don't want to ruin the experience just in case the 3D is bad.

The 3D was beautiful! If any of you have yet to see the movie, I highly recommend 3D.

Well I saw it this morning at 12:05! I was happy with it but there are several complaints I will post later about in a review. The dressing up was fun though, we got a whole lot of people in our theater to start dancing a hobbit dance my friend made up. After that we sang christmas carols while we waited for about 4 more hours.

I saw it in 2D I do not like 3D at all, it is more expensive and it always just ruins the movie for me.

We slept, and then waited for a couple hours, got a picture with the one ring, and one with my sis, and one alone, then we got snacks and watched it. I was surprised at how many barefooted people were Laying(!) on the floor! (Fungi, dudes!)

I loved it too. It was less breathtaking and epic than LOTR, but it was funnier and it was a great feeling to be back in Middle-Earth.

When I went to Avengers it felt like everyone was asking to do a picture with them. So this tie I counted how many picture requests I got, it was at about 21 pictures.
