I would much rather have 500 elves in battle than 500 dwarves, but actually, its a hard choice

Oh - this is so easy! Dwarves all the way! Why? They are just plain awesome! And all this talk about elves being better than them is pure rubbish!

But why? J.R.R. Tolkien obviously had a thing for elves, and Peter Jackson (The director of the Motion Picture Trilogy based off of Tolkien's books) obviously had the same fetish, but I'm not so sure why. I think elves are very cool. Explained and shown as quick, nimble, strong warriors, who love to party and enjoy a peaceful time. I think their ideas are good, and their methods for achieving goals are both valiant and honorable. But they aren't, exactly, better than dwarves. Just because Tolkien (At least in the LOTR trilogy and The Hobbit) may have depicted his Elves in more heroic ways than his dwarven characters, and the same went for Jackson's adaptions, but that still is no reason to believe that Elves are the better, or more powerful, race. Dwarves often throw fear aside, rushing forward in battle, even though the odds are obviously against them, fighting like little monsters who knew nothing else but how to battle. Their bravery a great light, shining out in the great darkness of fear. But think about it. Dwarves being short, have a great disadvantage in battle against their foes, who are nearly always larger than them, and yet they often take victory, or make a valiant stand of defense. While Elves, tall and not hindered by lack of stride length or height, do just as well, and sometimes worse. If that isnít enough proof that dwarves are better than elves, it is sufficient evidence of their awesome-ness.
(By the way, MC, I'd rather have ten dwarves in battle, than have one-thousand elves.)

I don't remember Dwarves not using bows. (Though I don't remember them using them in the LOTR books or movies, either.) And their tactics were just as, if not more, amazing and well-planned than the elven war tactics... I just don't see why everyone is infatuated by elves. Meh. I am, and always will be, a dwarf fan.

Notice how the dwarves got SEVEN rings. The elves only three. Sauron must have thought they were a greater threat.

ah well you have settled me back on my toes, but i mioght simply like to point out a few things. according to the books, the dwarves were mmade by mistake when the god dude (watsisname) found one of the archangel things crreating them. when the archangel pleaded him to destroy his creation, he instead gave it life. this was the birth of durin. meanwhile, the elves were kinda like the chosen people. but that hardly matters. i also might call to your attention the part where legolas takes down an entire oliphant! uhum... anyway, it is a hard decision. i do like dwarves alot, but i'd very much rather have a graceful focused elve tan a berserk dwarve. just a matter of opinion. :)

DWARVES!!!!! 1.They have better technologies than the other races (even the elves bought shields, swords and armors from them)

2. They have a stronger will than the other races

3. The didn't leave Middle Earth in hard times (like the elves)ok... that's not SUCH a good point.

4. To answer Gondabuggan: It was Iluvatar himself who gave the dwarves live and accepted them as his children.

5. Dori helped Bilbo two times in dangerous situations

6. Tolkien himself said in the Hobbit-book that The dwarves of Dain were very strong... EVEN for dwarves, that means, that dwarves are as strong as strong men, if not, even stronger.

7. Gimli killed more orcs than Legolas in the battle of helms deep (And Legolas is the son of the elvenking Thranduil)

8.Many of Caleb's arguments say, what I wanted to write in my text.

Look. it's all a mater of

a) opinion
b) strategy
c) location.

Because: you might like the dwarven beards... or you might the elvish hair, or the dwarven armor vs. the Elves' armor, and so on. Or you might prefer the Elves' grace, or the dwarves' stoutness. Maybe you like short people. Maybe you like people who can see farther... run faster... etc, etc.

So no.1 is opinion. What you like.

No.2 is strategy. How do you want to fight your battle? Use dwarves in hand-to-hand combat? Or are you going to use lines of Elves to fire arrows into the ranks of oncoming enemies?

Which ties into No.3.

No.3 is definitely location. If you are fighting on the open plain, or if you are fighting in the caves, you may want to use dwarves. but if you're fighting in the mountains, you may want to use elves to shoot down the enemies as they try to scale the mountain.

See, dwarves are much shorter, stouter, thicker, more... unbedgeable. you can't just shove 'em outta' your way. And they like to use axes. Great for hand-to-hand combat. (As mentioned above.)

On the other hand, Elves are more graceful, they lie heights, they can see far, and they can shoot quite well. That makes them great for places like the mountains, where they can pic off enemies one by one, as they try to scale the mountain.

However, the best thing to do would be to deploy them both together. Together they make a great team. That is, if you can get them to cooperate... :D

I'm not really sure which ones I like best... I guess I like 'em both the same!

Of course, you're right (like alwaysXD). The own opinion may be different, one shouldn't wanna destroy someone's personal opinion. Of course both races have pros and contras but some of our arguments are facts from Tolkien's books like : dwarves are stronger, elves are more graceful etc.

....On the other side it's difficult to compare people who are so different from each other

all good points. i geuss both of them do have pro s and cons, and have no dought, i like em both. u just like elves a little better. :)

as for you micheal, the boooks do say that he did give them life but it was someone else who was giving it form. when illuvitar found out, he pleaded him to destroy his creation, but instead illuvitar gave it life. :) just being a nerd. and have no dought, you are right about that somewhat.

Right!I know that Aule created the dwarves, but when Iluvatar found out that Aule wanted to create the dwarves he said to him that they only can live when Eru allows it. If Eru (Iluvatar) hadn't give them life, they wouldn't have been able to do something else than Aule's orders.

I like both races and Turgon and Elrond are two of my favorite characters but I strongly prefer the Dwarves.

Elves are graceful and dextrous and are great smiths in their own right (Feanor himself created the Silmarils) and some seem to have infinite ammo (LEGOLAS...WHY?). Their weapons are light and quick and they themselves have great vision, speed, and strength. But they are often cowardly. This cannot be said for the sons of Feanor but the elves of the third age oft choose inaction or hiding over fighting.

Dwarves, on the other hand, are smart, cunning, creative, powerful, loyal, resilient folk. Their smithwork is second only to Feanor and their architecture is unrivaled in any age. Their weapons are fierce and their demeanor in battle is fiercer. Sure, Elves can kill goblins and orcs - maybe even trolls - but Dwarves fight all of the above and even dragons! When Morgoth opened his gates in the fourth or fifth battle, Glaurung father of dragons came as did many others of his kind and the Dwarves of Belegost and Nogrod came to the aid of the Elves. But when the Dwarves of Erebor called for aid, Thranduil recalled his forces and forsook King Thror. Somewhere it's mentioned that Elves and Dwarves do not mention the events that estranged them but it is clearly the events listed above. Dwarves are quick to friendship and slow to forgive.

Men are boring and weak lol. Except the Rohirrim and the Ithilian rangers.

My most favoritest of races in the Middle Earth would have to be Hobbits! They're so peaceful and relaxed...just my lifestyle! Plus they're very short, like myself for my age. Almost fully grown and I'm only 5"4. I had a teacher once who was that height, and he was fully grown! But anyways, my second-favorite race would have to be Dwarves. Like Hobbits, they enjoy a good time, but also prove great fighters when the time is right! And, they're quite short too! It gives me hope, and motivation sometimes! Haha, so for Dwarves or Elves, I'd have to say Dwarves!

Haha, don't forget that they make great ring bearers! I too like Hobbits more than any other race in Middle Earth some of the reasons I like Hobbits are 1. because I'm 14 and only 4.5ft-4.8ft tall and where I live most people are 5.6ft-6.4ft tall at my age 2. they are peaceful and 3. they make great ring bearers(I know I said that before) but out of Elves and Dwarves its hard for me to only choose one I mean Legolas is from Elven origin and Gimli is from Dwarven origin and both of them are my favorite characters but I will go with Elves to help Mark debate against everyone why Elves are better than Dwarves.

I'll add that in the book it does not say that Thranduil is right there with his army, ready to attack Smaug. It does not even imply that he was there when the dwarves were attacked.

Exactly. I think PJ wanted to prove dwarves and elves enmity on a certain event and enrich movie's plot. Reffering to Tolkien's book hostility of these two keen began in 1st Age, when king Thingol and dwarves of Belegost (or Nogrod) had had a deadly argument about Sillmaril.

I'm 5'9" or 5'10" but I'm really stocky for my size; I weigh 195 pounds but I'm not fat at all. So I tend to love Dwarves and Hobbits over the other races. I plan on building a berm house in a few years when I get some land; they're fairly easy to build and who doesn't want to live in a Hobbit Hole?

I am 5'6" and have dirty blonde long hair too! I am neither fat nor skinny, athletic and my face is elvish, but I have a long nose like a dwarf and a slowly growing thing that might later become a beard. I live in a small village and have a comfortable life like hobbits, so maybe I'm a dwarf with some elvish and hobbitish sides.

My turn! I'm short for my age, but my feet are exceptionally wide and hairy. I don't often wear pants (shorts are the best)and shoes, nor socks, if I can avoid it. Today I went out in the snowy weather with shorts on, and didn't feel cold at all! I'm also very a very relaxed person, with some adventure in me! That's how I'm like a Hobbit. My ears are also sort of big, and are hidden behind my medium length hair. I'm only 5"3 and 3 quarters, a good 5"4 with shoes on however. And I'm also not the skinniest person...but I'd say I have a similar build to your average Hobbit or Dwarf. I guess those fit for both Dwarves and Hobbits. I do have a more stocky, muscled build though, and I play lacrosse...even though I'm small! But I have a fierce swing, and can pack a punch! I'm a fighter at heart too, and although I'm relaxed, I don't give up! That's how I'm like a Dwarf...oh yeah, and I'm constantly shaving my face too! SO I guess I'm a good mix of the two!

Quoting Michael Kringe
I am 5'6" and have dirty blonde long hair too! I am neither fat nor skinny, athletic and my face is elvish, but I have a long nose like a dwarf and a slowly growing thing that might later become a beard. I live in a small village and have a comfortable life like hobbits, so maybe I'm a dwarf with some elvish and hobbitish sides.

I'm 11, am 4' 10" have short, brown hair, I am chubby, have a medium nose, have a mustache (You can thank my Italian ancestors ;) ) My face is dwarvish, but build is Hobbit, I also have pointy ears, and sharp teeth. That makes me a ManElfDwarfHobbitOrcSpiderTrollDrewMalinoAngeloSangelo JohnMarstonVaas!
