Hi, Mr.Phipson. I was wondering, how could I get past a serious case of the builders block?

Builder's block can be bad but luckily, inspiration can come from just about anywhere!

I saw on your homepage that you enjoy building scenes from movies. Really, there's very few better inspirations that right there. Of course you may want to try to avoid the "overdone" ones like Star Wars, LOTR and things like that (unless you have something REALLY special in mind). Try to find something that not many people have tried recently and draw your inspiration from that.

If you're burned out on movies, books, comics and most importantly, real life are your "go tos" for inspiration. I like to look at buildings and things where I live and wonder what they'd look like turned into brick.

Inspiration however is not a switch that you can turn on and off. It comes to each of us in different ways at different times. But be aware of it, it can strike at any time so always be ready. Carry a sketch pad if you can or even a notebook to jot down ideas when they come to you so you can come back to them later and flesh them out.

Don't worry, inspiration will find you, just be sure you're ready to see it when it sneaks up and bites ya!

Good luck!
~Chris.

Mr. Phipson:
I'm relatively new to MOCpages, as well as new to the brick in general. A very long Dark Age has me still struggling with a few issues, most notably a lack of pieces. I've heard many people use BrickLink to order extra parts, or other similar websites. Do you have any advice on what places, sites, etc. would be the best to bulk up my collection?
Thanks,
A M

Sorry man, the timing's just bad on that one. We've got the MocAthalon coming up next month (actual start date is March 1st but prep takes about a month) and all my time's gonna be devoted there.

I'd love to help but sorry, just can't swing it with the MocAthalon. Thanks for asking though!

You've heard correctly. The best place to go would be bricklink.com. I've also heard of people getting good deals on sites like ebay and craigslist but you have to be in the right place/right time. Me personally, I have a Lego store close by so that's where I do my stocking up. I buy brick by the case from the store so when I need 700 2x4 bley bricks, I just call the local store and see if they have a case in stock.

If you don't have a store handy then yeah, bricklink is probably the best way to go.

Good luck and welcome to the party!

I don't think there are rounds, it's just a bunch of teams who are all given categories, and the team who can build the most categories might get more points and the team with the most points win. :) If ya wanna join, I'd hurry up and start a team!

hey Chris I have a little confession to make, Our competition we are setting up well its very similar to them so I looked at the rule of the MO and not totally but pretty much copy-ed most of it but I did write it to match up to our group so it not verbatim but its pretty close hope that was okay it was just my first really big contest so I wanted the rules to be just right.

Mr. Phipson,
I love making mechas, but I have run into a problem when it comes to making them. There are so many different mecha on this website that I have found it hard to come up with a completely original idea. What I have found myself doing recently is using another MOC (or part of it) as inspiration and modifying it. I do give credit to the original since I know that I would hate to have my creations "stolen" and no credit given. I just do not want it to seem like I cannot come up with any original ideas. If you wanted to look at my Mobile Suits folder maybe you would get a better understanding of what I am talking about. Granted, my Mobile Core units and the concept behind them are completely original (to my knowledge), but I love building the larger mechas. Any help, ideas, and/or suggestions would be much appreciated. And sorry for the Wall of Text.

My personal favs are MOCpages (of course) and I'm part of a private LUG called Virtualug where we also share creations.

There's a large Lego community on Flickr as well. I have a Flickr account but don't use it much. Really, MOCpages and Flickr are the two biggies. Personally, I prefer the community here on MOCpages. I find the people friendlier and the community tighter knit. That's just my personal opinion though.

Hope that helps!

Originality is the real trick around this hobby. Even in all my years doing this I've only personally done a "new and unique" technique once... and no one even noticed it (sigh).

The best thing to do is just give a simple "I got the basic idea from x" in your write up somewhere. It only takes a few seconds and can avoid people giving you hassle later on.

Hope that helps!

How do you know when you need more bricks? That's simple... You ALWAYS need more brick! No matter how well you plan, you're ALWAYS going to need more of something.

As for how long I keep my builds together, I'm pretty much the same as you. Once the moc has served it's purpose, it's gone.

Good luck!

Hey. I know what you're going through. If you have time, try and be active on here. Look for inspiration everywhere. (thouhg I usually don't find it :1) I went through a sort of dark age just before the MELO, when I built nothing. I was just talking in my groups. I kept on feeling pressured to do stuff, but I just couldn't think of what to do. Join a contest - wether you can enter or not. Just sign up. You'll feel pressured to build something, and eventually you will. It may soar from there, but who knows. That is what happened with me, so we will see. Hope this helps!

Yeap, and in case you were wondering, here's the moc that I created the technique for:
http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/187040

It's a clear build so it's hard to make out but what I did was come up with a circular design that connected with each level AND (this was the tricky part) didn't show any gaps. People still ask me to this day how I did it but it's too difficult (I've found) to type an explaination.

Anyway, enjoy and keep on building!

Hey Chris, you got any advice on this?

http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/354188

Hey Kyle,

I like the rover and the border you built gives the whole thing a nice, clean look. Me personally though, I've never been a fan of the "toss everything in the middle" technique. Don't get me wrong, it does create the look you were going for of the lunar surface and you did the technique well, but for me, that particular technique just... I dunno... something off about it. Again, this is just my personal opinion and it's nothing against you or your building. Heck, even when Kelso does something like that (ya know... if he ever built anything these days...) (wait, that's the pot calling the kettle black isn't it? whoops) I would still look at it with a crooked eye.

Anyway, that aside, I really like what you did there so truly, no, nothing that could make that moc better than what you did. It really does look great! Nice work!

For something like that, I'd actually suggest starting with the interior stuff first. If you build the walls and floor first, then you're stuck with the size and have to work to cover all that open space. Whereas if you start with your interior furnishings first, then you can build the dio to accomodate what you already have.

I've found that building "backwards" in this fashion really helps when you have a specific goal in mind.

Good luck!

Noah,

What you're feeling is perfectly normal. It's just burnout and you need time to refresh a bit. I usually hit that about once a year, usually during the winter months (between the MocOlympics and the MocAthalon). You see, during Brickworld buildup time (spring), I'm busting hump to get my BW builds done. Then after, I'm usually stoked by all the cool stuff I've done and getting the planning ready for next BW. But by the time winter starts to roll around, I get into a slump (where I am presently) and usually get back into the swing of things by mid to late March.

It's totally normal so don't worry. Enjoy your time here with the social scene leaving comments and what not and just wait patiently for inspiration to strike. I've found that when you activly LOOK for it, you never find it. It's when you take a step back and don't TRY to find it that it comes up and whacks ya on the back of the head like that frying pan my wife threw at me last week. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm heading off to MRI...

I've used a sketch pad in the past and find from time to time that it does help in the creative process. My only advice there is to not get too attached to what you see on the paper. Use it as a starting point and then let the brick guide you to the final destination.

The last thing I used a sketch pad on was the white queen's castle for our Alice in Wonderland collab. My final build didn't look like my sketches but the sketches really helped me arrive at that final build!

Hope that helps and good luck!

If you do a quick search for light boxes I'm sure you'll come across a number of designs that would be both easy and cheap (reminds me of my ex...).

I personally just picked up a clip on light from my local hardware store and take pics against posterboard. Total price... about 15 bucks. Of course the more elaborate you get the more money you'll have to spend. It's all up to personal preference.

Good luck!

Hey Mr. Phipson, I'm not really requesting any advice, but I didn't know where else to put this. So I'm sorry if this isn't the right place to ask. Anyway, a friend and I were hoping to start a contest that I think a lot of people would be interested in. The problem is, the last time we tried to do a contest it pretty much failed. We didn't have a lot of contestants, and in the end our finalists didn't even build an entry. We're aware that you and a few other AFOLs have hosted/judged multiple successful contests over MOCpages, including the MOColympics and MOCathalon. So, we were wondering, would you like to help us? Our goal is to get the contest started with as many contestants possible, and for us to do it by ourselves would be extremely hard to accomplish. Having someone well known and respected throughout the community would be a big help to getting people motivated and involved, and hopefully have a successful event. If you can't help us, we would completely understand. If you can't, could you possibly give us some suggestions?

Love,
Josh and Cade

So what's your opinion on the New York Police Department?

The stories I've heard make it sound like they have a worrying combination of arrogance and incompetence, with a side order of cowardice and criminality thrown in for good measure, but I wanted to get your opinion.

Not because I'm planning on going there; from what I hear they've got a near match for the entire population of my home country crammed into a tiny island with stratospheric property prices; a madhouse run by fascists with rude elitists for inmates.

Just wondering, 'sall.

Okay, does anybody have any advice for my problem?

Now, I'm not trying to sound petty or childish or anything like that; but I don't feel that my mocs are getting the attention they deserve and don't know how to make them more popular. I'm getting an average of about 8/9 likes per moc and I feel that they are worth a lot more. I am aware I'm not an amazing builder but I'm at least a decent/good one and I've been on MOCPages for over 5 years now.

I always put my mocs into lots of groups as soon as I upload them and I'm also active in groups and I comment on other people's creations, so it's not like I'm an unknown builder! Like I said, I've been here for over 5 years and in 2012 I was nominated in the Moccie awards for 'Most Improved Builder'!
I know it isn't about the likes but still.

Here are examples,

That is a perfectly good moc, in fact I really like it. Good lighting, good build, popular theme, good main picture yet only 10 likes.

Another well made moc. Good photos, good quality build, good main pic and only 9 likes.

Another build I feel is very good! Good techniques used, good photos, okay it's not a popular theme, interesting main pic and only 11 likes.

I went through a phase last year of getting roughly 30 likes per moc but now it's really dropped to how even lower than it was in my first few years!

I'm not going to stop moccing or anything, I love Lego way to much and I'm not a crybaby! Haha.

But if anyone can come up with any suggestions as to how to up the popularity of my mocs, I would be grateful.

Thank you one and all!
