Do you know where this thing came from next to names all of a sudden? I've tried to edit my name, but it's still there. Is someone playing a prank with the code or something?

I was going to ask Mark something but then I saw that he will be back on the 22nd. So I guess I have to ask the Phipsonater.

.....

How much detail can a 8x8 vig be? I made one really quick, and I think it's missing something.

I don't bail until tomorrow morning, so I'll tackle this, and then Phipson can give you the REAL advice...

...as much detail as you can squeeze in. I took a quick look at your home page, but if you recently posted a vig, I must've missed it (or did you not post it yet?).

Anyway, there are a lot of variables. What's the subject? If it's elctronics or machinery, for example, you can have a ton of detail in a little vig. If it's a simpler texture or a simpler subject, than less detail is needed.

If you're looking at it, and it feels lacking, then go back in and see what else you might be able to do. It's Lego, after all, so play around with your options a bit before calling it quits, and see what other details you might be able to create.

How are you able to find a contest or Moc-Off?

Easiest way is to try typing Moc-off in the search bar, but that doesn't always work as once it's in the search, most likely the contest has already started.

Next option would be to just join a LOT of groups. There's ALWAYS someone who's starting a contest of somesort somewhere.

There's really no "one" answer to the question. You just have to keep looking. As a side note, I know you weren't part of the MocOlympics, but we have some side games going on that you're welcome to join in on if you want. My last post (Hoth) has a link to one of the side games if you'd like to check it out.

Oh, and please don't make new threads in this group. We try our best to keep it "clean" around here with not a lot of clutter.

Thanks and good luck!

why we mustn't add our lego creation in this group?

True, this group is called "MOCpages Advice" and you'd think that that would be one of the things we do is give advice on builds.

The reason is basically that this group is an offshoot official group run by MOCpages staff (Mark and myself) and being an "official" group (kinda) we keep the posts here to a minimum. There's just no way that we would be able to give advice on every single moc that was posted.

We do however try to give advice on a creation from time to time (if we can). All you have to do is ask one of us to give honest advice and provide a link to your creation and we'll do our best to get to it.

Another reason is we try not to make this group a kind of "hunting ground" for comments. When you add a creation to a group, you're basically asking the people in that group to look at your creation. Now of COURSE there's NOTHING wrong with that. That's WHY MOCpages exists. We just try to keep this group clear of "spamming" for comments.

And lastly, speaking of keeping the group clear, please don't make new topic threads. You can direct your questions to either Mark or myself (or any of the other people who have a thread already devoted to them) and we'll try to get your question answered as quickly as possible.

Thanks and good luck!

ok, so when i was making a MOC (that was supposed to be completely made out of white bricks) i ran out of white bricks, so i looked around for more. I found some, but now that i compare them with the new white pieces i got.....:( There a different color, now it's not just a matter of the color fading. I look at the top of the brick.....and it doesn't say LEGO!!!!! It says TYCO!!!!! my question is, what is TYCO, and what do i do to them? (note, i never have bought any building product other than LEGO, my guess is that one of my brothers got them from a happy meal a long time ago).

Just another clone brick. My advice is to slip it back in to your brother's collection from whence it came.

I am wondering what it takes to style myself a purist:

I understand the ultimate no-no is modifying a part into one not ever sold by Lego.

But how would a purist feel about manufacturing parts that are sold by Lego from other parts? Say, cutting a corner plate into a 1x1 and 1x2 plate (because the smaller ones are quite rare in some color). Assuming the ugly cut sides are properly hidden when used.

And what is the purist's view of cutting free end hose elements to some arbitrary length, not just to a smaller sold length? That is, were the hoses ever intended by Lego to be cut?

Purists are a fickle bunch and from what I just read from you, you're not one. Purists veiw ANY modification as an unholy aberration. To be a purist, you can't use ANYTHING not made by the Lego group nor can you modify anything from them in any way.

I'm not a purist, but I do have certain traits of theirs. I won't cut or modify any parts myself. I don't care if anyone else does it (some purists go ballistic when they see that) but it's just not my cup o' tea. I also use brickarms and brickforge stuff but hate megablocks with an unholy passion.

As for the hoses, I don't know what Lego's original stance on those was (if they intended them to be cut or not) but again, a purist never would. Hope this helps clear up a few things for ya and if you need anything else, don't hesitate to ask!

The late Nnenn used to do that (cut up pieces and stuff) and people got overly emotional for his LEGOŽ brick mods. But at the same time, people gush over his heavenly creations.

http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?m=nnenn

IMHO, I find the debate ludicrous. I personally would not mod my bricks coz I got a very limited supply. Maybe I would have a different view if I got tons of them.

Anyway, if it makes you happy with your creation, by all means do so.

Peace!

Easy. Kelso's Apocalypsis stories. Not only for the build, but because I had the honor of talking through some of the story with him and helping him iron out the details.

The man's a genius, no doubt there... now if we could get him to post the next episode before the 2012 apocolypse that would be swell.

My humble opinion about the purist issue : like Chris, I'm not interested by modified parts for myself. Unlike him, however, I've recently bought a set by a clone brand (not megablock) and I think I'll mix the parts with my Lego. The parts are not of an high quality but some doesn't exist in Lego, and the main color of the set is also not a Lego color : so it can add some possibilities which are interesting. I've been a kind of purist for a long time, but I want to go further now. I plan to integrate parts of other construction toys in my MOCs : but it will take time, I think, to make this works. That was my two cents on the "problem" : for me, people who are 100 % purist are a bit boring : but too much modifications of parts can also be a bit strange for people who claims they like Lego. Also, I'm not really interested by brikforge/brikarms, but I don't mind if people use it.

OK, it is important to me to be purist in some sense. Allowing mods seems to me to be a spoiler of part of the art. So I'm internalizing your very useful answers and have decided to become a NARP (Non Anal Retentive Purist). I will not cut any hoses, but I'm cutting some plates. The cutting is not producing any novel parts or effects, I'm just avoiding paying $2 shipping costs 100 times over to get these 1 at a time on BL. PAB doesn't even carry them.

This is my confession here, cause I'm also considering not labeling the affected MOC. No one will know, cause every part will look legit. Have I gone on long enough to make it obvious I feel guilty? It would almost be better if some monopolizing BL reseller just gathered up all the plates I have in mind and gouged me in one fell swoop.

Yes... yes you have. HAHAHA I've always been of the mind that it's YOUR Lego, do what you want with it and have fun! That's what this whole wonderful hobby is all about. Purist, non purist... meh, who cares as long as you're having fun right!??!

Let's put it this way. I had a VERY large collection of megablocks sitting in my garage a while back (from before I became a moccer). I wasn't going to use it again so I decided to pass it along to someone who would. Dave Xandegar (and ex-mocpager) does a LOT of workshops and what not and uses whatever kind of brick he can get his hands on so I gave them to him to use.

Everyone has there own level of purism, you just have to find yours. Whichever you choose, I'll still be checking out your awesome work!

What got you guys into LEGO? Me? I inherited about 6 big tubs of LEGO and began to build. However I don't know if DUPLO counts when I was 2?

For me, it was Lego Star Wars. I've always been a huge Star Wars fan and when Lego started producing them in 1999, I couldn't resist. I started picking up the sets and putting them on display. This went on for a number of years until about 3 years ago, I came across MOCpages and a whole new world (see, keeping with the Aladdin references here) of Lego was opened up to me. And that's it in a nutshell.

Remember that comic I was working on? Well, I decided to re-write it (for my purpose), and have been working on the set for episode one. I just can't come up with a title. It needs to be short, yet invokes a strong sense of emotion. The title I came up with is: Avenged. I don't want to say anything of the story because it is a HUGE twist in the E.N.W.G. story line. I am keeping the idea of having the viewers come up with their own interpretation of the story. For the first episode I have selected Boulevard Of Broken Dreams by Green Day. As for the video, I can't access youtube from work so I'm unable to give commentary on that. For the title, I like it. Depending on what you have planned for the story of course. Wouldn't want you to go giving away spoilers so I won't ask, but as long as the title does infact reflect something that happens in the story, then it's a good choice. Good luck with your comic!

I don't know "how" to do it, but yes, it's allowed. My advice though would be to NOT have it on autostart. I'd have a "click here for music" thing at the begining of the post. Some people get annoyed when music starts automatically. As long as the song is "clean" then you're good to go. I think Mark knows how to add music. If not, there's plenty of other people around here that can help you out. Good luck!

Yes, like Chris said you can add it. Autostart can be annoying if the sond starts loudly really fast because if people's speakers are on full volume...well you get the idea. Both autostart and having to click a button to play music both have benefits and cons; I have used both before. This might help you with autostart...

That aside, no I haven't. I don't play video games. Not because I have an issue with any of them, I just don't have time. That and all my extra money goes to Lego. Someone once told me one of my MOCs was from bricklink. Exept I built it myself.

That is true, I do not think that MOC was from BL after I looked at it closer, but the point of posting one fig...um, yeah.

Today I bring with me a harder question than I normally do. Do you still remember that first moment when you really discovered you love of the brick? When you got that one set and you knew you werent gonna put it down 'til you had made everything and anything possible with those little plastic bricks? If so do you know the set? How old were you? Do you still have parts of it? If not then be sad.

Quoting Chris Phipson

Sent it to Sean and we'll take care of it.

I'm in total agreeance with you that although it's not "illegal" as you say, it still shouldn't be done. Sean is in agreeance as well and has reset a number of self rated mocs.

Thanks for pointing it out!

Thanks...

But... (AGH GET THAT WORD AWAY FROM ME!)
