I'm not Buller. XD But anyways, could comment on this? http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/220377
I tried something in midi-scale, and built horonzontally. Something I never tried before. And I know all of you don't like music, but I am rarely using it now. The one I used is just sad. It may be a little graphic though. (Lee and Giovanni's MOCs are worse than this.)

Alright, here we go...

First off, I didn't think it was too graphic. As you mentioned, we've seen worse, and as a Mod, I'd make the call to allow this. I would think Sean would, too.

I love the music. I have to cringe a bit every time I hear someone's added music to their page, because it's technically not something we're supposed to do...but I've done it myself on occasion, and it would be hypocritical of me to say to others not to do it.

With that in mind, I think the choice of songs was terrific for the concept. What bothered me, however, was the vocals interfering with the text you'd written. When I read here on the pages (in other words slower than when reading the news, or novels, etc.), I hear the words that I'm reading in my head. The vocals get jumbled with what I'm reading and make comprehension difficult. I think the page might have functioned better if there were no vocals...OR...no text being read when the vocals are heard.

As for the build, I think it was a good first attempt, but you could push for more detail in the form. Of course everything depends on what you have in the way of parts, but I'd recommend using more plates and smaller pieces to help define the form a bit more.

By the way, I think the strongest aspect to the page was the concept of this build...the message was very strong, and it was a great concept!

ANY color works with bley, including old greys. What you have to decide is what the other color suggests...

Yellow, red, and blue are traditional, and vibrant. They often give the feel of racing colors. Particularly if blocked in striped patterns.

Accents of orange can look great with bley, and can feel somewhat alien. As do the lime greens.

Browns can suggest age or rust. White's often used with medical vehicles, and for things you want to feel "pure" or pristine, while sand greens feel military.

So I'd suggest thinking about the gunship's purpose, where it might come from, etc., and decide on the accents based upon that.

Excellent advice on every point, Matthew. Not much else I can say, really.

As for giving advice, did he ask you for your thoughts? I say this because while some people will appreciate all the time and effort you took to write that out, others will be like..."what the? I didn't ask for all of this!"

I usually don't leave a lot of tips or advice unless someone asks specifically. And if anyone else asks for your advice, go for it -you'll put me out of business with solid tips like those! ;-)

Hey Mark, do you think I should work with this technique a little more?

I'm just wondering because I fell in love with it when I built it.

Maybe some constructive criticism.

http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/220296

Yeah, dude...if that's something you find fun. The possibilities are pretty much endless.

Right there you've got a pretty simplistic variation of a modern sculptural piece. And I like it, as far as it goes...color balance between the two, corresponding movement (almost like a dance between the two forms). You could get pretty crazy with the parts usage in creating modern sculptural pieces. In fact, it's not uncommon to see Lego builders just playing around with certain parts combos, and repeating them over and over again.

So, if that's what you're diggin, then I'd say go for it. Try some really unique parts, stange combos, and repetition to create visual rhythms...could be cool.

Might be an idea to allow people to upload some pages to the group; it's supposed to be an advice group, allowing people to upload MOC technique galleries, terminology lists, tutorials and so forth to it might be a good idea. Of course you'd have to police the pool, but it'd probably be an easy job; deleting anything that doesn't look educational can't be too hard as long as you only allow two or three uploads per person, per month.

Food for thought?

Can anyone help me build a decent fire engine?

I can't give you a step by step, unfortunately, but you can glean a lot from the ones posted here on MOCpages.

I'd suggest trying to take some time to look at a few that really seem like something you'd want to build...the ones you think are particularly nice. Then look at the parts they used for shapes and details, and try to mimic that. In places where you're not sure, or you have something else in mind, go with your own instincts.

By looking at others works, you can develop a lot of new techniques and add them to your own repertoire. I still do it to this very day.

Wow, yeah...some nice work this time around. Consistent lighting, excellent action sequences. I loved the camera shake there towards the end when the gun was blown. Also, you had a focal adjustment towards the end there that was really cool.

I noticed the angle variations, which was great, too. I'd love to see you be able to get some serious close-ups of soldier's faces some time...to see nothing but the face in the entire screen (look at Peter Jackson's the Lord of the Rings series for examples). It would really heighten the drama.

I think your next step might be to incorporate music for mood, or even start creating lighting colors to effect the mood of the film.

One other thing that comes to mind, is that you might consider the pacing of the cuts a bit more. They weren't bad by any means, but you can start to taylor them more towards the emotional response you're trying to get with what's taking place (for example, action scenes often have quicker paced cuts).

Anyway, excellent work...think I'll go back and check it out again.

Patience, dude...I was about to reply. Or are we supposed to be at your beck and call 24/7? (I'm just asking...I mean that's what my wife expects after all!)

Okay, greebling...basically what was just said. It's a term we've been using for ages now to describe parts that indicate detailing. It might apply to structures, ships, vehicles; just about anything.

Greebling breaks up surface texture on a MOC so it has areas that aren't just flat, or smooth. Sometimes it can be just an aesthetic issue, or sometimes it can be necessary for believability (like pipes, engine parts, etc.). Greebling is cool up to a certain point, but it can also be overdone. I usually recommend areas of heavy greeb work, mixed with other areas where the surface of your MOC is smooth.

I know a lot of the LEGO terms, but never got to know greebling. What is greebling?

While Kelso has provided an adequate description, greebling is one of those things that's easier to show than explain.

Greebling is the stuff that sits between the gun turrets here: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/azazaza/Vienna/3.png and here: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/azazaza/Vienna/4.png.

In most cases, greebling is just a lego version of a very complex plumbing system; it doesn't go anywhere, it doesn't do anything, it just looks important and mechanical and it breaks up the smooth boringness of an unadorned hull.

Tips? That's pretty broad, but, for starters I'd suggest the same thing I do to any builder regarding the quality of the presentation...good lighting, clean build, clear pics, etc.

As for subjects, there's so much to pick and choose from that to suggest anything would be useless. I suppose I always enjoy sci-fi stories and concepts that have spiritual overtones (Halo, Star Wars, BSG, etc.) and suggest a good bit of believability. There's usually a lot of mystery in sci-fi, because it's still the "great unknown," and mysteries always make for cool story-telling.

Don't know if that's any help or not, but there ya go. ;-)

How 'bout now, Kelso?
http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/221839

Yeah, that's getting there! Looking pretty good. If you had the parts, I'd say go sideways with bricks for a no-studs flight deck vs. plates with studs up. That's a tall order, though.

The other thing that stands out to me is the surface areas of the light bley sections. They look very good, but could do with a couple areas where some greeb work might appear (piping, mechanical elements, etc.), or even some sticker usage, to break up the monotony of the plain, smooth surfaces. In other words, a bit of detailing would be nice.

Hey Kelso. how are you with lego mosaics?

Never tried one. I do so much drawing and painting with my work, that mosiacs are too similar for me. I love seeing other's works, though - Kenney and Gugick do some great ones!

Alright, making some progress. I like the front section. The elongated form of the ship is pretty common, though, so it would be nice to see some unique parts combos in the detailing to help set it apart. Are you going to tile it out? You know me...don't like seeing those studs very often. Do you have and secondary colors planned?

Well for tiling, I can't, I don't have enough. Secondary colors most likely dark gray.

Interesting, so the comments are dropping. Are the "ILI's (I Like It's) dropping as well?

The comments could be changing as a result of members deleting their statements. Do you think that's a possibility, or do you suspect something else? Is that post the only one experiencing changes in ratings?

That's what's weird. All the comments are still there, and it still says "I Like It" next to each name, but the number is still messed up. And it is the only one I know of that has this issue.

Yeah, I understand about the tiling. That can get expensive (BOY, do I understand!!!)

Just curious about the look with any secondary colors. The bley's low key and always works well with the black. Let me know when you're finished with it...I'd like to see it.

And how in the world did they go from "Metal is the Devil's Music" to making it themselves?

A little consistency would be nice, hypocrites give the rest of us a bad name.

Depends on it's appearance and functionality. Does it need to haul something? Does it function well with only the four wheels? If it functions well and doesn't NEED more support, then how does it look? Would it look better with more? Worse?

Your call completely.

It hauls people, like a bus. I'll add some back up wheels, not the main brown ones, but I'll add some. At least, if I can find the back tires :P

LOL...yeah, I could imagine you would get bored!

Nah, there's no way I'll ever know what I've got in my collection. I had too many from childhood to consider counting them to begin with, and since then my collection has EXPLODED. I couldn't even guess what I own.

And thanks, regarding the Eye...I hope to see it finished, too! ;-)

No genre is 'good' or 'evil' just because of the type of music they play (Justin Bieber is the only exception). The words of the song is what makes it 'good' or 'evil'. But then if you are referring to the quality of music, that is an opinion (with the exception again of Justin Bieber).

Dear Mark,
I have been in a building slump lately and have just decided on what I would like to build. Now, if you did not know the title of my page is "Matt's Historical (Sci-Fi and Fantasy) Domination". Now I have PLENTY of Sci-Fi, and not enough History or Fantasy. I have Ideas for some Historical MOCs already so I don't need any help with that. What I do need help with is deciding on what to build that is fantasy. I have a movie picked out that I would like to build from. It is the movie "The Incredibles". I know I want to build miniland characters for it. I can't decide on what scene to build that would challenge me and not strain my collection too much. If you have seen the movie can you give me and Idea for a scene?

OMG, I LOOOOOVVVVVEEEE that movie!!!!! But I'm not much help on scenes, because I don't know the limitations of your parts collection.

My first choice would be scenes from the Island. I mean, what GREAT colors, forms, textural variations, etc. with things like rock facades, waterfalls, jungles, and then techno stuff in the mix with buildings, vehicles, machines and so on. I could spend years doing that stuff. If your collections pretty limited, then you could roll with some simpler stuff, like vehicles, or interiors from the movie (love some of Syndrome's buiding interiors).

My .02 on that. But whatever you go with for MOCs, GREAT choice of subject matter!

I've been in a sort of building slump lately as well, and I have made a ram-like, all orange (but two pieces, which are grey) animal but lost one of the leg pieces. Any ideas of something to make for the last leg? I have a 2x1 block on top with 2 1x1 pieces below, with 2 1x1 tiles beneath it. (The hooves are orange and neon orange). That's my current idea, I want something more robotic, like you know, a person would get; a steel leg. Please help me; it would almost save my life.
