How's your Brick-Fu?

I’ve come up with a rating system for myself and friends of mine and I thought it high time I share it with the rest of you. This is a self rating system on a 1 to 5 scale. There’s a part of me that thinks it’s wrong to classify builders with a number, but some people like to know where they stand. Also, being as this a self rating system, no one else is going to “place” you in a category that you don’t feel is right.

Here’s how it breaks down:

Level 1: Just starting out. You’ve got a few sets and maybe some Bricklink, PAB, or hand me down bricks. You’re just starting to get the feel of how these wonderful little plastic pieces fit together.

Level 2: You’ve got a good handle on how things work and can put bricks together to form recognizable shapes. People enjoy what you build and mark you as a favorite. You still have techniques to try and new things to learn, but have moved past using 14 different colors in a moc with only 25 pieces.

Level 3: You’re competent in your building skills. You can take clear pictures and have got that whole “lighting” situation sorted out. When you post something, people want to check it out. You’ve started working with different styles of building. At this point, there’s at least 20 to 30 people that call you a favorite, probably more. At level 3, your collection of brick has gotten to the point where it’s time, if you haven’t already, to get it sorted before it gets out of hand. Still with a lot to learn, but well on your way.

Level 4: At this level people look at your stuff and go “Wait, how did you do that again?” Your collection has grown to the point where if it’s not sorted, you’re in big trouble. You have truly come in to your own as a builder. You’ve developed your own “style” that is instantly recognizable and your name is known by more than just your small group of friends. At this level, people truly recognize you for who you are as a builder and look up to you.

Level 5: Reserved for deity status builders. EVERYONE knows who you are. Your builds are true works of art. At this level, consider yourself a blackbelt in the art of brick-fu! There are a few names that I would put in this category, but let’s just use one for now to give you an idea of where I’m going with this. Sean Kenney.

There ya go. My little scale of skill. Remember, this is a self rating system. No one can “put” you in a level, it’s found after an honest assessment of yourself.

Where do I put myself you ask? I’ll let you know after we get some other responses to this thread.

I'm parts of '3'. My picture skills are pretty deplorable, but I've been favorited by I believe 25-33 people (Though I'm not too sure) And finally, my collection is at the sorting stage. (which is a pain in the bum.)

So if you rate a fivce on someones creation your sending them to steardom? Thats a good system i should be more careful when rating. Thanks Christy! (:

No, getting a rating on a moc doesn't translate to this. If it makes it easier for you to understand, you can change the numbers to letters. Go with A, B, C, D and E if it makes it easier.

Hmm... I would put myself between 3 and 4. I got a good amout of legos and have them sorted. Well, I have gotten lazy with sorting latly. But most of them are sorted. I have about 70 people who call me favorites. I have the whole lighting thing down. But I am not sure if anybody looks up to me.

I'm probably in between level 2 and 3. I have 23 people who call me a favorite. I can take OK pictures not amazing but acceptable. Just 6 months ago my collection was flooding my room, I had pieces under the bed, carpet, dresser, and my feet whenever I walked around. I have since started the sorting process but that has been halted do to school. I've also started trying to build in new areas.

Don't take the number of people that favorite you too literally. It was just a ball park and shouldn't be used as your measuring stick here. Think more of the overall picture rather than simply meeting one piece of criteria. And remember, it's not a contest.

I am going to say I am a 3. My collection has just over 45,000 pieces and I have a TON of MOCs to post. My MOC building skills have improved (in my opinion) a lot. I will be posting some creations through out the next couple weeks, by then I will definitely be a three.

wow really alot of legos I consider myself a three anyways

Except for the part about the 20-30 favorite builders, (I suppose I DID only join in October) I think I'm crawling up to three, because I've finally sorted out my photo problem. And most of my best MOCs I haven't uploaded yet, and I don't know when I will. (I think I'm freaking out too much about this whole thing)

I honestly don't know where to put myself. I want to say three, but I feel it may be an exaggeration. I have a fairly large collection, and i build a lot, but a lot of it doesn't get posted. Not many people have added me as a favorite builder though.

I think I'm level 4. I have a big collection, and I haven't sorted it since third grade. But, since I always use grey, I have all my grey pieces sitting in one area, and I'm too lazy to get them off the ground, so they just kind of sit on my carpet. I definitely have my own style when it comes to planes, ships, and vehicles... And I'm pretty sure there's people who know me but I don't know. I think it was Sammy Harris who told me that a friend brought me up in a real-life conversation... I think that counts for a 4.

Then I must be a 2, because everyone on this site knows who you are, and your collection is probably over 9000 times bigger than mine, plus your skill outweighs my skill by a factor of probably two or three. You sir, are no three. You're at least a four.

Everyone only knows who I am because I talk a lot. My collection is about 70,000 parts. My skill? Sure, I've got a good handle on how bricks go together, and my presentation has improved immensly over the past year, but I still have a LOT to learn. I've talked to Kelso about this scale a number of times. I'm not going to assume where he's going to place himself, but I'd place him (if asked to) at a 4.

In any case, you're still above people like me in terms of skill. Therefore, either I rated myself wrong or you did. An interesting topic. As of now I'll shoot high and place myself at the top of a 4 or maybe possibly soon to be at the very bottom of a 5? I feel as if in the last 4 months I'm beginning to be discovered. I've got my collection of about 50,000 organized by the piece and color, perfectly. Both of my latest creations have been featured on the TTB. With 200+ favorites and a ton of positive comments, people are starting to come by my MOCs more and more often. My latest "apocalypse project," coming soon, has erased any of my thoughts on still being in a 3 or 4 category. Of course one thing that I have to add that everyone (yes, even Sean) still learns new skills and techniques while building regardless of their "level". It takes a long time to "perfect" ones skills. I've seen three people accomplish this here, all of which have been building for quite some time. I could see years ahead of myself (or anyone else) before I reach the "top of the 5's" category. Well that's it, what do YOU think?

A very steady 3 by your criteria Chris. Big collection constantly in need of a sort, faved by 20-odd builders (including your good self)and getting good comments for technique and ideas. My photography is OK and i'm trying to have a go at different builds. I want to push that up to a high 3/4 this year I suppose, improve my photography, win a contest, build something a bit different.

You do realise what a potential can of worms this is don't you Chris? Everybody's being quite nice at the moment "Oh no way you're a three, you should be a four.", "I see myself as a two, maybe a three". I'm waiting for the first meanie to slap down "Your Brick-fu is weak old man. You are a ONE!!!!!"

I'd rate myself as 3. I've got a decent sized collection, though it's still unsorted. And by now I'm building things I could only dream of when I first started out three or four years ago. There are still plenty of techniques I haven't tried yet, but I'd say I've got my own style at this point.

Okay, fine. Someone has a dog and makes mocs of its behavior.

This raises the question of: have you ever actually watched a dog?
Game ones don't count.

Honestly, for a dog, anything in range is nature's toilet. Just because someone doesn't gloss over it doesn't mean it's not true.

I’ll let you know after we get some other responses to this thread.

i would say i am in the middle of the three category. jordan, i would place you a little higher than that. maybe 3.7 i am probably a little lower than that. mostly cus jordan has better photoquility and more pieces. i have about 3-4-5,000ish. my brickset says around 2,012 but i have made tons and tons of pab orders in the past years and plus, i have not even put in all my set's in brickset. i am definetly at sorting stage. agreeing with brady g, it is a pain it the bum. but i am getting there. one more note in this seemingly long post, some of you have overestimated your rating by a but and a lot in some cases. kinda like how some did with there lego piece count. some of you i would place around a bottom to middle 2 not a middle to high three like some said. *cough**cough* novasad *cough**cough* what do you think phipson, am i about a middle or a little above middle three?
