Wow, could you two make this any harder! Each of your creations portrayed a different side of western life: the settlers to the West with hopes of a "new beginning" and the western town with its people and saloon. It was hard deciding my vote, but its going to go to Matt S.
Matt, your creation was not what people typically thing of when the word "western" is mentioned. Rather, it shows a different and fresh yet gloomy view of the western settlers. The fresh and open yet serious and hard feel of the west was well captured in this scene. The bird, running wife, baby, trees with fallen leaves, and wateringhole all helped complete this creation, also.
Blake, your creation was great as well! It did a great job showing the classic old west town look through your use of figures and foliage. The only thing that kept me from voting for you was how the creation is titled "The Saloon", but didn't have much inside or outside the building to designate it as a saloon.
Great job to both of you! Excellent building!

First off, you both did an amazing job. Period. Matt, I've looked up to you as a superior mech and sci-fi builder ever since I joined MOCpages, and watching you step out of your comfort zone did NOT disappoint. (Confirming yet again your spot on my favorite builders list.) I absolutely love that blood effect, the ingenious tree technique, which I have only seen done well once before, and I also really enjoyed your pond, the woman running, and fallen leaves. In the way of constructive criticism, I think your landscape could have been more varied in height as well as foliage. But, with all that said, I have come to the conclusion that Blake gets my vote with his more traditional approach to the Wild West theme that he executed very, very well. Again, you both did a stunning job and earned my respect as some of the best builders in the wild west theme.

To tell the truth, Blake, I hardly knew you existed excluding an occasional comment or something. Believe me, this MOC made me notice you real quick. Though I think you could have added some sort of boundries concerning a town or something and the ground height could have been varied (as there should be a couple sand drifts), this is a great creation. I absolutely loved your detailed building (loved those 1x1 tiles in there), horse fence, cactus, curved roof, and the overall “Wild Wild West” feel that you gave it. So, in short, my vote goes to you. Thanks for letting me be a judge!

First off, I'd like to apologize for delaying my vote. I've put a lot of thought in this for weeks, but I've come to a decision. Now, to the voting. You all did great, and both have given their best into these Mocs.

Blake, I've followed you for a while on this site, and I've always loved your creations. You have a true talent on almost every level of building, and you execute that very well. Your idea of a classic saloon fit perfectly with the theme. The building itself was good, and you did an impressive job with the details. I was personally impressed with the rooftop, but I feel you could have put some extra interior details in it. I'm a sucker for that cactus you got too, very impressive. Lastly, the action you put in the scene added to the fun factor, extra points there! All I suggest is that you give the ground some definition and add detail.

Now Matt, your vignettes are outstanding, and that was exactly what I was expecting. A nice Autumn effect with the fallen leaves and golden trees. The pond was a nice little extra detail, and the mini-figs showed great action. Now, my personal favorite would definitely be the bird flying overhead, that was just perfect! My only concern was the empty spaces throughout the creation, giving it a small sense of boredom. Also, I'm not going to take away any points for this, but when I think about a western theme, I don't think about a green valley filled with trees, I think about a barren desert. I'm just saying though, it's just some advice. Overall, nice work. You impress me over and over again, nice work...

Alright, now for my vote. Good job by the both of you, it was an exciting moc-off! Blake, you were great and all...and that's why I'm voting for you! Nice work Matt, you just needed to fill in those empty spaces, then you could have gotten my vote. Anyways, I'm accounted for, so I'm done here. Thanks for the judging opportunity, and sorry this comment was so long! :S
