Orc Culture
Join to comment
So i'm not sure if you guys have already fleshed out Orc's and their culture but we do have some things already set up, yes.We know they're tribal in nature.Probably capable of low level industry (iron weapons, bows and arrows etc). But i thought i would expand on this a bit. After studying Budhism in school i made up an Orc Caste System.
Cheiftans-Tribe and military leaders
Shaman-Religious leaders,doctors
Warriors-soldiers,pirates
Hunters-Merchants,farmers,hunters,fisherman
Casteless-slaves,workers,peasents

Also after i bought the Troll Fortress and finally getting the only female troll out there has anyone considered that maybe Orcs are Matriarchal in nature and women fill the roles of Shaman and Tribal leaders.

Just something to think about.

Mh, i decided not to develop them yet because their history will be integrated in the eastern continent backstories. Basicly, i see the orcs like in my favourite pen'n'paper games, so they're simple but do have a king and a culture of war and conquer. Your caste system works very well though maybe it's better not to have a ruling caste. King or tribesleader becomes whoever can earn the respect and strength, for example to assassinate the old king. But the king is only the political leader and needs the acceptance of a religious leadership. Here's our orc witch coming. My idea wouldn't be a matriarchy but that the females are more intelligent, able to learn magic and so some choosen rare females are holding the religious cults. Our old witch is the highpriestress and as religious leader maybe more powerful than the king and any warrior inofficially. Other women don't have something to say while the priestresses forces respect (or the gods would burn the kings empire immediately). That would explain why only one female orc is famous. Of course, the highpriestress decides which virgin she will train to her follow.

Another fact we have is that the orclands are also colonized by goblins, ogres, Agami and trolls who are integrated into the orcish culture and society.

On this topic, what about the Ogres? what are their special traits, or intelligence level if any? Or are they just used as beasts of burden, or for war.

Ogres are already in the wiki. Lazy and low-minded. If agressive or hungry extremily dangerous, if not they're just laying around. For the orcs they may offer their strength in war or economy (falling trees, breaking rocks etc.) Like the Lego HP Troll figs they're low populated.

Then, with another question, why would they be so similar to the 'troll' creatures? I think they should have more to them to enhance their uniqueness. just a thought, because right now they are only individualized by their surpassing blue ugliness.

I think that trolls should be trained to attack things on order and are more like warhorses, because ogres are some kind of hybrid (the wiki says) they where probably used at first more for labor because there bodies can take burdens but there weak arms and laziness makes them not the best fighters. Then the orcs realized that while ogres are very hard to train, once mad they go into rages that are unrivaled even by trolls. So they can't fight in formation and can't be trained to keep fighting if things aren't going there way or retreat or advance. So orcs will make them angry and then let them loose once they start to take wounds, they usually flee one by one the orcs then charge the demoralized enemy. These are effective terror weapons. Think war elephants (more like Hannibal's elephants then the highly trained Indian elephants.

Well, both are primitive but trolls are a wild hordes-lifeform driven by hunt instincts but able to learn, wich can be disciplined and trained while ogres appear as slow lone wolves. It isn't even clear if ogres belong to a natural species or a result of magic mutilation. They often react like mind-disabled creatures and live an unhealthy lifestyle, thats why they're fat and ugly. So i don't think it's the same. But for a complex culture both races aren't suited.

Of course, orcs don't care much. They tolerate the ogres living in their land and if, then they wouldn't be used as military warriors but more as warmachine-pullers or biests like Jack said.

BTW, what i'm still needing is an idea of orcish religion and magic. Maybe they have female shamanes but to who or what are they praying? Should orcs have an own god pantheon or a war god, and what's their myth of the worlds beginning and end?

What it the Orcs are animistic and worship the nature around them.Maybe certain animals represent certain types of gods.Like a hawk god is the god of war.

Perhaps they believe they believe that the world was created by the gods as a pure world. But they tainted it with their sins and they were locked in the form of animals for all eternity.

Maybe only Orc women are able to work with magic and thus only women are shamans and mages.
