The Category list!
 Group admin
This list is about 90% set in stone. I brought back some old favorites from last year and added a few new ones as well.

The categories for the 2009 MocOlympics (in no particular order) are:

Castle: Actually, it’s closer to a castle vig if you will. You could build a tower, a portcullis, maybe even a dungeon if you’d like. Maybe a great hall full of revelers, who knows? Do a battle if you want, I don’t care. You will be judged on your interpretation of this and how you executed it. I use the word “vig” but don’t take that literally. You can make it ANY size that you want.

Mech: We’re looking like hardsuit or walker sized stuff. If you can produce some monstrosity in 14 days… more power to ya!

Classic Space: Just like it sounds. Of course you don’t have to use “classic” pieces but just something that looks like it came from the 80’s.

Short Story: Come up with a little tale to entertain us. You will be judged on both story concept and build for this so, be creative.

Whateverscape: Landscape, cityscape, planetscape… you choose. As big or as small as you’d like.

Microscale: Just how it sounds. Show us those MicroSkilz YO! Don't worry, it doesn't have to be Shannonia or the Rusty Ferret.

Guess the movie: Take a scene from a movie and brick it to bricky life. I was originally going to say no “Star Wars” but thought that most of you have a ton of clones and whatnot. Just remember, you’ll be judged on originality as well as build so try to avoid obvious choices. We don’t actually have to guess the movie so be sure to tell us what it is in the description.

Aquastlenauts: Giovanni's little contribution to MOCpages. The idea here is to build an undersea adventure with "Aqua Castle" overtones. Check out Giovanni's page if you're still confused.

Space Pirates: Same concept as Aquastlenauts, only done with pirates.. in space. duh

classic spacetle: Another idea from the brilliant Mr. Shannon Ocean. In the same vein as the above categories, merge classic space and castle! Have fun!

Suburban Clones: My favorite concept for a new category this year. What does your clone army do when it's not batteling the seperatists? Mowing the lawn? Bar-B-Que? You tell me.

Vehicles (real or "other") I got a lot of requests for this, so here it is! It doesn't HAVE to be a replica of a real vehicle, just something that looks cool to you. Choose from cars, planes, trains, boats, farm equipment or anything else you can think of! Go nuts! (no space ships though, that's for "other" categories)

sig-fig adventures: Choose a sig fig... build a set... make us laugh! And yes, you can choose ANY Sig-Fig you want (but you get bonus points for messing with Kelso). It doesn't have to be you... just remember the one basic rule of sig-figging... it's all done in fun!

post apoc: If I have to explain this one... you just haven't been paying attention.

steampunk: Gee, I wonder what (insert any vehicle or machine you can think of here) would look like if it were made in the 19th century?

popular fiction: (including star wars, halo, harry potter and so on) The Halo category was great for last year, but I wanted to expand it. So go ahead and use ANY popular fiction that you can think of and build from that. Please try to make it easy to recognize. I mean, I LOVE Red Dwarf but only so many people would understand what Star Bug looks like so I wouldn't choose to build it. Other than that, have fun and be creative!

And that's it. I may update this list before the actual games start, but for now, this is what we got! So start thinking and good luck!

Awesome! But I have some questions, this space pirates theme they are not related to the pirates right, I am saying the classic ones? And in the vehicles one, can it be military vehicles? Oh other question, sorry for many questions, can it be and old MOC? Thanks a lot!

*****LIST UPDATE*****
I am adding "You know what they say" to the official category list. The idea here (for those that don't know) is to take a popular saying and translate it into LEGO. Sounds simple enough, but remember, you're being judged on creativity here. Just make sure that your saying is fairly well known so we all know what you're talking about.

I got some questions Chris:

1. Mech: Any would do, right? Not just chicken walkers or izzo-style robots that dominate in MOCpages?

2. Classic Space:
a. Do we have to have blue and grey colors? Or can we use any color as long as it looks like of classic space?
b. Blacktron came out in the late 80s. Does it qualify as classic space?

3. Whateverscape: Does this mean any word that ends with "-scape"? I'm thinking beyond landscape, cityscape ... i mean totally not about a landscape.

4. Space Pirates: Is this the opposite of Space Police? Or am I totally missing the point here? Need some explanation here.

Thanks!

Ok, let's go in order shall we?

1. Yes, any MECH will do. Any size, any shape, any type. Knock yourself out!

2. A: Any color is fine, just go for that "classic space" feel. B: Yes, Blacktron counts.

3. The basic idea here is a "landscape" of some kind. It can be a cityscape, moonscape or whatever else you can think of. Shannon Ocean got blogged last year for his "underseascape" that he did for the games.

4. Space Pirates. Take pirates as in "Argh, gimme some 'o yer booty las!" and put them in space.

Hope that helps. ~ Chris.

sooo... we tell you what the movie is, you go out and rent it, you watch it, then you judge how good it is base on what you saw from the movie? thats my guess of how you will do it.

okay, to possibly improve on chris' "arr and then put them in space" description (which was ridiculously amazing, chris), especially for you younger folks, think of that disney movie "treasure planet". if you haven't seen it, look it up on wikipedia or youtube, or just go and rent it. apart from the robot with ADHD, it's a pretty good movie, for a disney movie.

Guess the movie: Take a scene from a movie and brick it to bricky life. I was originally going to say no “Star Wars” but thought that most of you have a ton of clones and whatnot. Just remember, you’ll be judged on originality as well as build so try to avoid obvious choices. We don’t actually have to guess the movie so be sure to tell us what it is in the description.

what if it is obvious choice? then can the judges guess it?

Just please tell us what's it's from. You know us judges are old and senile and can't remember what we had for breakfast two days ago let alone every scene from every movie we've ever seen. Help the old guys out please.

I have been practicing my fifty yard castle building, but I think I am a bit flabby on steampunk hurdles. I think I can handle most any sci-fi lifting, but that kind of strength training takes time away from preparing for the city relay run. And I just know the German judges will not like me in the micro-scale competition.

For guess the movie I was planing on doing a stars wars kind of entrie if I get that catagory but does it have to be an actual battle from the movies because I was thinking of doing sort of like a clone commando sort of battle (four clones taking on an entire CIS army unit like from the video game clone commando or just a lone clone) because I don't have that many clones

All I'm going to say here is the category is called "guess the movie" not clone wars episodes that I wish they made. Maybe you should save that idea for the popular fiction category. Just a thought.

okay, to possibly improve on chris' "arr and then put them in space" description (which was ridiculously amazing, chris), especially for you younger folks, think of that disney movie "treasure planet". if you haven't seen it, look it up on wikipedia or youtube, or just go and rent it. apart from the robot with ADHD, it's a pretty good movie, for a disney movie.

Thanks! I really appreciate it!

Chris have you forgot about the town category? You can't have an moc Olympics without a town category.

Hey I've seen some other people worried about getting a category they have no pieces to build (that's why I think you did not include a bionicle category).
I got all the stuff I needed (that means pirates, castle, SW), but I also got an idea for others with this problem.
What about a backup category? The two contestants can agree to build that if one has no parts for the 1st.
Do you think it would bring up more, or less complaints?

haha, the two finalists are going to have to borrow duplos from their daughters to build. (or is that against the rules, chris?)

hardsuits I think would be a yes. sandstone, probably not. they're not really mechanical, and that's the way Chris likes it. drink a gallon of desiel and hang out in not but his wiring.

jack on the other hand, might like something big, hard, tan, and one-eyed to look at. but he's not a judge, so don't go showing him your sandstone.

Yeah, Hardsuits would be fine. I'm going to let you make your own judgement call on the sandstone. Is it "really" a mech? It's your choice... but I wouldn't. And it's for the judges to decide anyway and there's more than just me there.

What would anti-megabloks fall under? Also, what would a stopmotion baseball game be under?

Not sure what you mean by "anti-megablocks" but I don't think it's going to fall under any category. Also, you've been talking about this stop motion animation moc for a while. Let me just say this to you.

First, there is no category for stop motion animation and the animation itself would not be counted as part of the moc. It's the same basic thing as the "no photoshop" rule. We're judging mocs here, not computer skills.

And secondly, and probably most importantly, the fact that you're working on this moc NOW and planning on entering it as an entry is COMPLETELY against the rules. The MocOlympics is based on the principle that you get assigned your category and THEN you have 10 days to build it and post it, not have some moc on the shelf that you spent months working on and really like and then you try to figure out some way to sneak it into the competition.

If you post this stop motion animation as an entry to the MocOlympics, you will be disqualified.

That being said, I'd LOVE to see it posted on it's own, it sounds great! Just don't try to use it as an entry.

And that goes for ALL of you. DO NOT try building mocs now for a competition that you don't know what category you'll be competing in.

Thank you.

I've always found bionicle parts to be rather useful. take crimso's stuff for example, it's really good, and the bionicle blades he uses as fins or whatever always turn out really good.

i think a better example of that would be mark stafford. but i am way less talented than both of them when it comes to original use of pieces. and generally building space ships. because i am more into cars. military cars

well there are some people who have trouble in that catagory becasue they don't have any clones and they don't want to get them

True, but here's the difference. For guess the Movie, I'm hoping people branch out a bit and don't rely solely on Star Wars and the like. I'm REALLY hoping someone pulls out something from the past that makes people go "HEY, I remember that movie! Cool!"

Whereas for Popular Fiction, it includes more than just movies (and I hope people realize that) for this they could use video games, books, comic books... heck even other mocpages ongoing stories and themes (as long as they give proper credit).

I know the difference is subtle, but it is there.

Hmmm... You could include song lyrics, some builders here would go nuts... or even make a category, since "You know what they say" is out...

I'm gonna say no. Not enough people from mocpages know all the stories from Flickr... and really, that thing about using a mocpages story line... just filler. Try to keep it in the POPULAR side of popular fiction.

Oh you people and your nitpicking hahaha

Ok, here goes. Now rememeber, there are 5 judges here and this is only the opinion of one of them. Yes classic space usually has studs facing up and that is one of the main characteristics of it, but for me (and I stress ME here 'cause I don't know what the other judges think) it's more about the feel of the build and conjuring up the nostalgia of it. Does the "studs up" thing help that feeling? Of course it does. Is it a "requirement" as far as I'm concerened, not so much.

In short, it's not a requirement for that category to have "studs up", but it probably would help.
