When I want to build a mech, my first problem is always the legs! I cant come up with anything except Techinc legs...can you guys help me witht this?

Well if you want to have such legs then I suggest using hinges or somesort of pieces that bend. Another suggestion Would be making a proper form. Like depending how it leans should depend on how many bends the legs should have so it would be well balanced. I like mechs and stuff but I can't make one. I'm only good with guns...

haha, you put enough in didn't you Phong?!, well my first suggestion for mech building, is the body, build the body the way you want it, then build the legs to suit, if the body is too big, shrink it...vice versa. My
(whole mech...legs, and all) Falcon was 2 times as big as it is now, so i shrunk it to look more realistic, and to make it more stable and movable....which it wasn't anyway, and fell face first into the carpet.

Some Advice: Make a sketch with some drawings showing the parts (like an instruction manual, but made by you :P),so you can make any combos with parts. Sometimes when I have a problem I do that. :D

Pick me if you want...I spent (not always) often here at MOC Pages. Usually I offer some tips to people who are "stuck" on a problem (Specially on Transformers or Mecha).

Hello everyone.
I've just joined this group and will be posting a few mechas soon. Things about me... I'm 35, live in england and I came out of the dark ages 2 years ago. I had loads of lego when I was young but got rid of it. My girlfriend bought me a set and from then I have been building up my lego. I've got quite a bit now!! Anyway have a look at my stuff and as I said I will be putting up some mechas soon. Later

I want aid from a leg man. Can someone help me make mech legs?

Fix'd, and what type of legs do you want help with? Dog-leg types, chickenwalker, humanoid, what?
I can't help much with quad types, and reverse joints aren't my specialty, but I have a good deal of experience with sturdy, bulky looking dog-legs and I have made a number of successful humanoid designs with the aid of exofarce ball joints.
If you want an example, my Deimos and Zeniths are my best for dog and humanoid legs, respectively.

I'd like to nominate myself for the assistant moderator job, however, as I am on here at least once every other day, and usually daily.

Hey, Bernardo - Areesta brings up a good point about what kind of legs you're interested in focusing on. Depending on your goal, the approach can be very different. If you want to email me with more details, I'd be glad to help. I'm suggesting personal emails, because when describing techniques in detail, the messages can get pretty lengthy for a forum post.

Anyway, here's my email, if you're interested: mark@markkelsoart.com. Meanwhile, good luck.

My Advice: Reverse-Humanoid Type Legs.

| January 11, 2009, 6:35 pm
I have never been much good with reverse joint types.
Anyway, my potential best is not complete, and may never be finished as it's too big to stand without worm joints, which I don't exactly have a surplus of.
Basically put, I consider my Deimos to be the best I have, but I also like my small items; C-995, Phoenix, T-402, K'naash'aal, etc, as well.

Im currently putting some major effort on the Argus, in the meanwhile, im thinking on how can i make people come have a look at my MOCs...i gave them the best pic for the front pic and still my best creations (Post-Apoc Gargatua) only has 400 visits and 16 I like it, i thought it was a pretty good creation...any advice plz?
| January 13, 2009, 3:06 pm
First suggestion: Do not try a copyrighted item until your skills have a chance to improve; there is a very good battletech builder at brickcommander.com, and he is the baseline for BT mocs. Battletech items tend to have complex leg assemblies, so practice is vital.

Secondly, my advice for getting more views is to just sit and wait, being productive, etc etc. Eventually someone will notice you, wonder who this guy is anyway, click, visit your stuff and maybe leave a review. That is the normal way of getting views. However, if you really want to get views fast, nothing can prevent them like shameless advertising, which is annoying to begin with. You can enter a contest, as those tend to help when your fellow contestants visit to see how good you are.

When sifting through countless images of new MOC's what gets my attention the fastest is a good presentation. That means no elements in the background (not even the indication of boards or a white sheet - completely clean), good lighting, and good color balance. Here are some examples of outstanding presentations:

Brian Kescenovitz: http://mocpages.com/moc.php/60393

Alex Eylar: http://mocpages.com/moc.php/84614

Mark Stafford:http://mocpages.com/moc.php/33371

You'll notice that none of these examples are mind-blowing creations (although all quite good, nontheless). But the presentation creates an immediate impact to the viewer, and it will stand out over the countless other images that have busy backgrounds, poor lighting, and blurry images.

When I'm skimming over pics on MOCpages, Flickr, etc., these are the pics that catch my attention. After that, the quality of the MOC is going to hold it, and that comes with time and practice. But I can't stress enough what a good presentation will do for gaining immediate attention with your MOCs.

If I understand your question right, you were asking about how to make a clean background?

I use photoshop, but other applications may work just as well (for example, I used "Picture It" for some time before switching to Photoshop) There are several ways, but essentially I will

a)outline the MOC
b)copy it
c)paint the entire image white (or black in my case)
d)paste the copied version onto the clean white background.

With practice this gets easier, and then you can also fix color problems, value contrasts, and even soften the edges of your pasted image so that it fits seamlessly onto the new background. It's undoubtedly more work, but if you put a lot of time and effort into your creations (as I do), then it's worth the time and effort to properly record them.

If you have more questions, don't hesitate to fire away. Menawhile, I hope this answered your question.

I am going to make another Quad. This one will feature two NXT's. I had one that used an NXT, it was called the Red Quad. But since I took that one a part, I need another one that I can bring to school. I teach Lego Robotics in High School so I need to make another robot that my students can program.

I also have a Lego Cam from the Vision Command set. I plan to build that in to the head.

The first NXT will control the head, neck and tail. The second will control the motors at the feet and power the wheels.

Again, even though I have made Quads before, this one will be specifically for the School and my Robotics Classes. So, I'll make another one.

I am going to use white. I am currently sorting through my parts and checking to see what color I can use to build the frame work. Most likely black technic will be used for the frame.

Yay!
