MAC Uploader issues (sigh)
Join to comment
Sigh, okay, here we go.

So, I'm trying to upload something, and I am using a Mac Mini computer, with the new Maverick Updates. Everything was working alright, till I get to the "open" screen. This is the screen where you select where to go to get the files. Now, it pops up "Achintya" on the top (which is my account) but NONE of the files, or folders, show up. In short, I navigate to my name on the open screen, (the drop down menu), and went I select it, where I should be seeing things like "desktop", etc, I get nothing.

Help is much appreciated, thank you.

I'm not familiar with OS X Mavericks, but I'm wondering if it's a compatibility issue (often the case with new updates). I'll sit tight for a few days to see if anyone with more knowledge can chime in with their thoughts. If we don't hear from anyone, I might check in with the boss to see if he can tell us something.

Alright, thank you. It's worth mentioning that the computer worked perfectly well before the update, so, it's probably the update and compatibility that is messing up.

*bump* Any news yet guys? I don't want to sound too pushy, but I have several competition entries that need to be posted soon, so, what's the story?

I'd recommend seeing if you can find another way to post your work for the time being. (Any other computers you might have access to, for example?) We may or may not get input from other MOCpages members. As mentioned, I can ask Sean about it, but he's always very busy and response time can vary depending on his schedule.

Having said that, I think I'll go ahead and ask Sean about it since we've had this up for a few days and no one has responded. Perhaps he'll have some suggestions.

I too am experiencing the same problems:/
Luckily, there are other computers I can use....but it's really bothering me! Hope that things can be resolved soon!

Thanks, but I'm afraid I have no access to any other computers. I just tried another computer we have, which also has the update, and its giving me that problem. This is something that will effect ALL MAC users with the new OS, so any inputs and fixes would be great. In the meantime, I'm considering to drop out of the contests I'm in, if I don't get something fixed soon.....

Wait a minute. There is a screen that pops up before I get to select what images, or files, and it basically asks me whether I should allow the site access to mu computer. It has written in a box this (and this is a direct quote): "This application will be blocked in a future Java security update because the JAR file manifest does not contain the Permissions attribute. Please contact the Publisher for more information." So, yeah, I think that the creator (Sean) will be the only one who can do something about this.....

Maybe for the time being you can post them w/o the main picture by linking them via Flickr.

I've always had to grant permission to use the "fancy" uploader here on MOCpages. I had to uninstall and re-install Java v7 Update 45 just to get to the screen you're talking about. I happen to be a Windows 7 user btw.

Sean was kind enough to get back with me quickly. He said he wasn't immediately aware of any problems but would look into it. Meanwhile, you've tried using the "simple uploader," right?

Its not any better. I manage to navigate though all the screens, but when I get to the continue button, I don't see any of the coding. This really looks like some kinda of compatibility issue, for both Mac and Windows,,,,,

Thankfully, the 4x4 contest folks will allow me to link over to Flickr straight from the group, so that's good. My other contest deadline is well into Novermber, so I think it will be resolved by then, but we shall see.

Glad to hear it. Hopefully we can find out what's up, though.

If anyone else sees this thread and is having the same problem (ie Mavericks and uploading), we'd like to hear from you. If we hear of several members with the same problem, it would indicate for certain that it's a site-wide issue, and not isolated.

Thanks, gang!

I've had total failure of both uploaders. Neither works and the fancy one says "inactive plug-in". The simple one just says "done" and no image appears

I'm using a mac and safari as my browser if that helps.

Have you guys tried a different browser? That would probably work.

False. I've tried IE, Crome and Firefox.

To all;
This seems to be a Java issue. For Crome users it should automatically be updated, but it would appear you would also need an up to date version on your PC. If you have version 25 you need to upgrade to version 45. If you're not prompted from your PC visit the Orcale website and download the latest version for your platform.

Be sure to uninstall any old versions of Java on your PC. And of course after all this uninstalling and re-installing reboot your computer and try again.

I'm not an expert on MAC, I only recently got an iPad, but I have read Java and OS7 have compatibility issues. Check that you are operating the latest versions of both the latest OS and the latest Java release. Beyond that I can only suggest "googling" for a solution.

There may be an issue with the browser, MAC laptops can use GoogleChrome which I believe likes the uploader (though I wait to be corrected on this) and seems to work ok on Windows laptops, maybe the same is true of MAC books.

Chrome actually has problems with the uploader because it can't run (recent updates of) Java. Since my computer can't revert Java to an older version, I use Firefox for uploading pictures on MOCpages, and I use Chrome for everything else. :P

I think the problems are little farther up the pipeline. I downloaded the new version of Java, and it didn't change anything. I am yet to try the other browsers, though. They may work, but I think this shows that MP might need a bit of an upgrade now, at least to keep up with the new OS(s) that are coming out of Microsoft and Apple. I'll try with the other browsers, but also, let me ask, are there any free websites I can use to get the HTML coding for images?

Yes, Flickr. Click the share button on the bar below the picture, choose the size, and copy/paste.

Brickshelf is traditional. I've used it for a while (though not recently, obviously) and I've found it quite reliable.

But really, all you need is <img src="LINK">.
Everything else, like border size and mouseover text and the like, is surplus. Sometimes even superfluous.

Alright, I gotcha. I'm not on Brickshelf, though, and honestly, I doubt I can keep up with all that now, but its good to know.

Any news guys? I might use this flickr technique, but I don't think that the main image is working (it might be, but I doubt it). Any leads as to what the problem is?

Hosting images and posting HTML links here, excellent suggestion, I often do this when the uploader is having "issues".

I'd personally recommend Flickr. Photobucket used to be ok but it had problems with hackers so I'm led to believe it may not be the most secure option.

Google now have hosting facilities but I haven't used it yet.

Those are great and all, but how about the main image? I can do the Flickr thing without any trouble, but I can't add a main photo. And honestly, a post is made or broken by that main image....

Perhaps try uploading the main image on a Windows machine, if you can borrow one, or try it at school. Have you tried another browser yet? It's probably an issue with Safari, as I heard it got updated along with OS X.

Unfortunately there are no alternatives to using the uploader when it comes to the main image. What I tend to do is create the moc minus the main image and add it later once the uploader is working again.

As with any technical issue, it is as much about being patient as it is about finding workarounds.

Alright, well.

I firmly believe in not posting unless you have a main photo, so I won't be changing that. I think I'll try some other other browsers, and see what's what.

Wait, wait.

SUCCESS! After about half an hour straight of updating my entire computer, I have finally got Firefox to work.

Google Chrome won't work because it is a 32bit explorer, and the new JAVA updates will only work on 64bit browsers (Safari and Firefox). Safari was updated, and who knows what Apple did to it. Firefox, for the moment is working.

Thanks to all for helping me out; Mods, I think case closed for now....

Glad to hear you've managed to work out an option with Firefox. (I've been off line with work for about a week now, and was wondering what I'd find when I got back.)

It's still not ideal, as full compatibility with all systems is really what we need. But, given how hectic life is for Sean, and how often updates are coming down the pike, that may not be very pragmatic. So, for now we'll settle for hearing that you've managed to work things out using Firefox at the least.
