Server upgrades Friday night

 Group admin
Friday 28-June 2013, MOCpages will be offline while we install new servers.

I'm excited to roll these servers out later this week, which will hopefully solve a lot of the odd, intermittent problems that crop up on MOCpages (The most prevalent being: weird uploading problems, activity bar disappearances, random database errors that lock the site up, and e-mails that are not sent out.)

Three years ago we purchased several new servers and disk arrays that were put in place as part of a large migration to a new data center and a new server architecture in late summer 2010. (Prior to that, we had only one server in a very expensive managed hosting facility.) Traffic swelled as a result of the new capacity, and the following summer the increased traffic lead to a catastrophic disk failure that caused the loss of a lot of data on our image server. The image server was "band-aided" back together as quickly as possible while we began planning a new, stronger server architecture for the long-term.

Additionally, last fall we suffered the loss of a critical server in our lower Manhattan data center due to flooding and power outages from Hurricane Sandy.

As a result of these two failures, we've been running on a rag-tag cobbled together set of servers strewn across New York, New Jersey, Florida, and California.

This new upgraded set of servers promises to be more powerful, more stable, and more robust than the previous architecture.

I'm looking forward to the upgrades, and I hope you are too.

Most of all though - thanks for communicating the upgrade / outage with us. That, to me, means more than the upgrade itself.

Thanks for the update! Like MortalSwordsman said, this is definitely the best Lego creation sharing site out there. I have met so many FOLs that I probably would have never met if I was just on Flickr. While it may have its hiccups from time to time, the pros outweigh the cons.

Thank you for letting us know, both about the impending downtime and the new servers. I agree with Ape Fight, that means a lot. I look forward to a new era of MOCpages, hopefully free of glitches.

Agreed. Ape Fight you really nailed it. Taking the time to issue the warning is worth it's weight in gold.

Mr. Kenny, MOCpages is the best MOC sharing site on the internet. I have been a loyal advocate for some time. And while all the technical rough spots are annoying (this, that, and the other), the fact is that the pages remains the best game in town. The focus on pictures and feedback is unique and worth the effort to maintain.

Thanks for the update, and I will be hoping for the best results with the technical fixes.

Mr. Kenney, I have to say, you have handled these issues very well, and the issuing of a public announcement written personally is something I would not have expected. Of all the various websites I have been and am a member of, MOCpages is the best managed and most welcoming. Well done.

Thanks for the heads up on the new servers. It's great to know we'll have a few extra servers in different locations so the site can keep moving. Perhaps this will decrease much of the nay-saying in the "Deterioration of MOCpages" topic that should have been locked so long ago. Thanks for all the work you and your team do because I've never really liked anywhere else that I post my LEGO creations as much as I love MOCpages.

With luck, the uploader and email notifications will be impacted by this and no longer have strange hiccups. I also fully agree with MCLegoboy. Guys, don't panic. Adding a new server simply means there will be more processing power to run the website. There will be no changes to how the place looks, just how fast it runs.

No images will be lost as the existing servers will continue to hold that information.

Hopefully this upgrade will decrease the likelihood of another crash that might potentially loose images (which happened once before) and the chances that server traffic will be so high people cannot log on.

Sean,
Speaking of updating, there are many new areas of LEGO that are not expressed in the drop down when you go to the DIRECTORY. For example: there is no FRIENDS area, there is no LEGO SUPERHEROES area (a BATMAN yes, but no other superhero surprisingly not even a SPIDERMAN area and he's been around a long time!). There is no LEGO IN THE CITY area where MOCpagers could post their pictures of LEGO exhibits in their neighborhoods. No CHIMA nor NINJAGO areas as well as TEENAGE NINJA MUTANT TURTLES in other words who ever set up the areas in the DIRECTORY isn't keeping current! Also if one of us sees a photo of an interesting LEGO piece on the net and wants to share it we cannot the Java Applet will not let us it reminds us not to post photos that aren't our own personal ones! It is hard to post videos and gifs as well. You should be able to click and drag a video into the Java box the same way you can a photo. So can you look into this? It will make MOCpages current and fresh!
| June 27, 2013, 10:25 am
Also can a CHAT feature be added so members can talk to each other? We can comment, ask advice and get to know one another? On the spot in the right now! A notice can pop up and say Sean Kenney is on. We can click on the notice and say hi, if you are busy you click a BUSY NOW get back to you later button, or click OK TO CHAT. This is a one time event. No members will have lists of people they chat to as in google+ chat or yahoo chat! If someone uses this negatively THEY CAN BE REPORTED! A REPORT CHAT button is pressed and the whole conversation is recorded and sent to whomever you want it to go to! They will make the decision to block chat for the offender for a period of time or forever!

The Star Wars categories are way over-done. Instead of all those individual vehicles, there should just be subcategories like Weapons, Places, Battles, Figures, Vehicles, Starships, Ep I, II, III, IV, V, VI, KOTOR and Expanded Universe.

We aim to have things ready within two weeks. It became apparent late last night that there was a lot more testing and tweaks to do.

We are not changing anything on the website (like the uploader), we are installing new hardware and upgrading the system services (php, mysql, etc).

any plans to upgrade the uploader in the future?

People like me who have routers out of their/their parent's control find it exptremely annoying to have to walk to a wifi cafe to post picture(but not comments), and since I can upload to other sites I'm fairly certain that this is a problem caused by the uploader not accepting my encription type or something.

Ehm. I am pretty sure that others are having this problem, though, uhm. In my International Fan of Lego Debate Club http://www.mocpages.com/group.php/22580
I have had trouble posting comments. It allows me to post, but redirects me to a page that says that the group can't be updated. When I go through my history, and get back to the conversation I posted in, it shows my comment, but next to the topic's name, it doesn't update, and my activity bar is not saying that I ever wrote in the group. Is this just a side effect for now?

Since it's Saturday night, and no no one has anything better to do, maybe everyone's on MOCpages at once, slowing it to a crawl.

I have not had the "buttons" change take affect yet. Does it take a while for it to update?

It's not the buttons themselves, it's the header that contains them.

Really? It took me about five minutes to get over here, hit the reply button, and send this comment out. Its quite slow, but I would guess that is because not all servers are online, or something. (I hope)

I'm in the UK and thus far I'd have to say the new servers seem to be slower than the old ones.

Hopefully not a sign of the way things will be from now on.

It's hard to tell from such limited tests, but from observing page loads and performing wget tests directly on the image server I'd say that the image server(s) are performing rather well - the problem is the server(s) serving up the html pages themselves - which can initially stall for 2 minutes on a page load - and even stall mid-way through a page load for this length of time too.

I'm afraid to say that Spain is NOT different in this issue. 5 minutes for loading a creation, other 5 for the comment page, and 2 minutes for finally post it.

Just informing that happens in this country too, with this amount of posts I'm sure that admins are already informed that something happens with the loading speed of the site.

I'm in the same boat - noticeably slower from one page to the next. I'll sit tight for a day or two to see if there's still some kind of tweaking going on that I'm not aware of. If we don't see any improvements, then I'll try to touch base with Sean to see what's up.

I would be more concerned about the speed of things than the header right now. I'm just as curious to see what this header looks like, which will probably not be too exciting, but right now, just focus on the functionality of the site, not the designs.

Just so everyone knows, we are definitely aware of the problem and have been actively working on it. Unfortunately it's a bit of a mystery as nothing has changed since the initial migration when the site was substantially faster.

So please do bear with us as try to pinpoint the issue.

Is Colorado the only place where the servers are like they are supposed to be? Why are they slow for everyone? :(

Everyone, where you live makes little difference. Internet travels at the speed of light, so the most you could be slowed down just by distance is a second or two. It's the server's fault that it's slow, we've had similar problems in years past where the server couldn't handle all the people at once.

Sorry for the slog... the new servers are completely 100% new computers, which had to be rebuilt and reconfigured them from scratch to match the old servers. There are literally tens of thousands of virtual switches and settings, and we obviously got a few wrong when we set the severs up Friday night.

Our server admins have been tweaking these configurations nonstop for the past three days to isolate what was causing the slowdowns. We finally found settings on our database server that were causing it to wait many seconds before replying to the web server. ( Who would ever make such a setting? Sheesh!) :)

Anyway, as you can hopefully see, now we have the settings right and the site is much zippier as of a few minutes ago. (A previously 5- to 17-second delay is now an 0.02 second instantaneous response.) Yay!

Log in times are still a little sluggish, but moving between pages is MUCH faster. I've not had chance to test the uploaders yet. I'll shout up if I notice any issues.
