OK, we've had several conversations on this topic recently. In an attempt to avoid future duplication, if you have ANY question relating to your home page or MOCpages Home http://www.mocpages.com/ please post it here.

Can I ask that only MODS respond to questions so we can keep on topic as much as possible.

Thank you.

I suspect that some builders are purposely giving low ratings to drop people off the homepage. Honest ratings are fine but this looks like somebody is trying to keep their own moc on the homepage for as long as possible by bumping others off. I have noticed that when a moc appears on the homepage (the last moc drops off) and somebody then immediately gives the new moc a low rating which reinstates the previous moc. Does this make sense? I suspect it is the builder occupying the last spot on the home page. I have been suspecting this for some time but it has been happening a lot over the last two days. Mods - Is this something you are aware of? And would you like me to report them? At present I have two suspected builders. It is very unfair if this is happening.

Hmm...Did NOT notice this. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. Please go ahead and give us the suspected builder's names here. And if you would be willing, could you help us keep an eye on this kind of activity for a bit? I'm trying to work out how we might PROVE what's happening, but still...the more eyes the better.

Actually Sean's rules give him free reign - so we really don't have to prove anything. If he's convinced, then that's all that matters. Out of fairness, though, my thoughts are that it would be best to be as certain as possible. On a personal note: It's totally Sean's call, but I'd be tempted to delete an account of anyone caught acting in this childish and unkind manner. NOT the behavior we want on MOCpages.

Hi Mark, I completely agree and will continue to be vigilant. As you have indicated it is hard to prove, but I am pretty sure this is happening. I assume you can not view their recent rating activity? It can not be just coincidence that mocs keep reappearing on the last spot on the homepage after somebody else’s very good quality moc gets bumped off. The two builders I suspect are; Angel of Death AOD (today) and Chrones Omega (yesterday). If I have got this wrong then I am very sorry to waste your time and to the builders. Regards Joe

what happened? The situation described above is about people possibly manipulating the mocs on the home page. Not really a server related problem.

I just posted a moc that quickly went on the homepage. It jumped to the homepage with 4 like in 5 minutes.

It wasn't even there for 5-10 minutes, and it's gone. Anyone think these members who are allegedly manipulating the rating system could have done it?

I just found something out with my newest moc that I posted.

http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/307785

It says I have 7 "likes", but yet there are 9 ratings. It shows only 7 people have officialy "liked" my moc, but says there have been 9 ratings, none of which show up.

I think I've been hit by these delinquents. And I think I have proof that I was hit, but none to show who it was.

there is a known bug where the first like isn't counted in the figure at the side of the likes counter. So when it says you have 7 likes you actually have 8. There is also another bug, where if you rate, then comment and rate differently, your rating drops off the list of people who rated, but the figure still counts.

There is also a third issue where by visitors without accounts can rate, but they aren't listed. This is why some mocs that are being "blogged" show massive differences in the likes figures.

As for "under rating" affecting the numbers, no that isn't what is happening. the average score is affected but not the total number. For example if 5 people rate it 5 and then 5 visitors rate it 1 then the average drops from 5/5 to 3/5 for example. This would be enough to knock something off the front page.

But things drop off the front page for other reasons too. If two mocs with the same number of likes and the same number of comments are both on the front page, if another gets more than both of them, only ONE drops off not both.

No, this isn't a big problem, There's apparently a bug that gives you a rating even if someone a) rated and didnt comment, or b) commented and rated under 4 or 5 likes. This is why some people have more ratings than likes; don't worry, you havent been hacked,

Yeah, I hope we find them. The other thing that is weird is that, whenever you commented on my suit it got off the hompage. You gave it a 5/5. I just commented on something else that is on the homepage and I rated it a 5/5 also. However my hard-suit dropped off the homepage while the other thing I commented on still stayed one the homepage. How does that work?

Lets see, I see that you put marquee on your title. (I knew it!)

Many people use marquee on their page and won't be able to edit their homepage. This is why I don't use marquee. It disables you to edit.

But there is a way to fix marquee! You just need to use an iphone or android. The edit system works when you use it. If you don't have an android or iphone, you're gonna have to live not being able to edit your homepage.

Would anybody have any idea why my latest MOC is not appearing on the homepage even with 17 Likes? I notice Cyberfrank2010 added something after me and has 4 Likes and is on the homepage. It is rather odd, any explanation would be appreciated? I still don't understand how the homepage works. I thought that once you added a MOC and receive 4 ILIs you get on the homepage. Every MOC I've added recently has had the same problem :-(

That does make one raise an eyebrow. Ya know, I've never talked to Sean about the exact process for MOCs making the home page, but rather came to some general conclusions of my own based upon what we'd see each day.

However, like you, I'd expect your new creation to appear for a little while at least, given the number of likes and how your ratings compared with others at the time.

I'll throw an email Sean's way to see what he can tell us.

Is it not based on how fast you get the likes or in a specific time period, so cyberfrank got the four likes really quickly after posting the creation,
But Detomaso's page took a while to accumulates the likes.

It is and has always been the most active popular mocs that day in roughly the order they were created, however, being popular seems to be a mixture of comments versus votes above 4, if a moc gets a vote below 4 it drops down the list and can even drop off the front page in favour of a different moc with fewer overall votes and comments.

so something that was uploaded the day before with much more comments will always ALWAYS be knocked off for a more active moc created today.

I see, so if your moc creates a mixed reaction, some love and some hate it, even though you may have quite a few likes, you can miss out on the front page. Seems fair enough, I think.

yep that's exactly it. Plus, (and someone already mentioned this) it's how quickly the mixed reaction happens too, so someone who gets 4 likes together will jump up the list while someone who gets 10 likes over a full day probably will never get on there.

I've had two things on the front page and both had fewer than 4 votes at the time, they just got them all together. next day, even though they had even more views comments and votes, something with fewer comments replaced them.

I actually don't mind that, means other people get there chance to meet a bigger audience. What I do mind is that the current system favours those people who have:

- multiple accounts
- post links in blogs and other websites
- create popular themes (like halo, star wars and bionicle)
- have large numbers of active watchers

Sean was kind enough to get back to me with his own description of how MOCs are selected for appearance on the home page. I could translate, but for clarity, I'll just paste his description for everyone:

"For the MOCs under "Everyone's LEGO creations", it scans the 500 newest MOCs and selects those that have a 5/5 rating with at least 3 ratings. It excludes MOCs without a main image and those whose title contains "contest", "alliance", or "allies". They're shown in reverse chronological order based on when they were added to MOCpages (not based on when they made the list)."

De Tomaso - I'm still trying process any possible reasons why your MOCs could slip through the cracks, given this description. Your titles didn't include "contest," "alliance," or "allies." I'm trying to figure out if it might have been a timing issue, based upon that block of 500 that Sean described. But, nothing's coming to mind. Maybe I'm missing something obvious (my brain is mush right now, so it's a possibility!), but what that could be, I don't know.

I take it you are referring to the text seeming to squash up? yes same thing happens to me all the time. The only way around it is to add extra spaces before AND after any text you have selected a font size above the standard (which I think is 5)
