MOCpages App?
Join to comment
Just wanted to know, I haven't been able to visit MOCpages alot often, I'm mostly just playing on my iPod, so can y'all develop a MOCpages app so we can edit our homepages, look at MOCs, and easily upload MOCs using pics from the iDevice camera?

No. Use a computer more. That would help. Play PC games anyway, they are better. More fun too.

I like the idea of an iDevice app. It wouldn't be a trivial task, but I'd use it more often than I attempt to visit MOCpages on a mobile browser. Main functionality would be to view MOCs, upload pics from camera and photo album, ability to comment on MOCs and in conversations, and edit our own pages.

Yes, I do use a computer to view MOCpages but the ability to use a mobile MOCpages would be fantastic. I would pay for an ad-free version.

I use my iPod to go on MOCpages all the time. I usually check my email from my iPod and just go straight here through one. Otherwise I just Google it and it works fine but an app would be pretty convenient.

Even though I usually check out MOCpages on either my Mom's laptop, my PlayStation 3, or my iPod Touch I think it'd be a cool idea to have an MOCpages App for the iPhone/iPod Touch even though all I have to do on my iPod is bring up the safari internet and put in the site address..

Yeah, an app would be awesome. I don't own an Ipod or an Ipad, but my dad does. I could use the images on his Ipod to upload them to the site.

MP is a very popular social network, it deseves an iphone/android app.
What do we do?

Could it be available on Android aswell or instead, so ppl without iDevices could use it?

I have chosen Android myself (my Nexus S was well above my bro's iPhone 4, and it's still quite on par with his new 4s), and I often use it to waste some time on the 'pages at work.
I would definitely appreciate a MOCpages app.

It would be cool to have an app for the MOCpages website, but think about this. We would need someone to program the app, which would cost money. So, most probably, Sean would have to make to cost of the app $0.99, or more. And also, with a mobile, device, how would you add MOCs? Another thing: not all pics are compatible with Idevices and stuff. It would be a lot of work. It is definately a really good idea, but a lot of work for Sean and many other people.

Totally! I think that would be such a great idea! If you just charged $0.99 for it, then you could get a little out of it.

Well definitely, it is a good idea, but if we have a server problem on the pages, like we are in right now, then who knows how it will be on the app. Also, I think that people might use the app to try to spam MOCpages. But if we can get passed all these problems', then it is a great idea!!!

Also a "share on FB" button on the pages would be very cool.

Who's y'all exactly? Unless somebody decides to create this app for free this will never happen. I use my iPhone to visit the Pages and it's fine. An app is a needless waste of money, I'd rather the money went on improving the site than on an app.

Other websites also have resources that MOCpages simply doesn't have. Like the comment above you said, the money we have goes into trying to make the site run as smoothly as possible. There simply aren't the resources to do the "fancy" stuff that other sites have.

I suppose advertisement space dose't bring in the money all the other sites have, because that your only way to get money, sites like flickr are membership run.

I think that we should look at what we want with this (proposed) MOCpages ap. As a member, I can comment on anything, using compact, small devices. What this ap would mostly give to the user is the ability to add lego creations from their Idevices. But do you really want that? With that, MOCpages will be filled with camera phone pictures. What this app (would) do is do what this site already does, which is freely visit the site. The app would solve problems that aren't and shouldn't be there.

But that's the thing. I thought this over a few times a while back. What you do is this-

1. Make a free version of the App, you can leave comments, create groups, talk in the convos, edit your homepage, everything BUT add a MOC. This would be made by a hired professional. This would be downloaded mostly because it'd be faster than going online AND because it could have an offline mode.

2. Make a PAID verion (3 dollars or so). this is where you can add MOC's and stuff. This would make money. I for would WOULD buy it, I'm sure lots more would too

But what if your traveling? You wont have MOCpages! You could even browse MOCpages WITHOUT internet, plus some people only have a narrow gap of time on the computer because they might have to use their parent's and they're usually on

I really don't see the point to doing this. For starters, almost anything you can do on a normal computer can be done on a mobile device, except uploading stuff (and some even let you do that, I can upload using Firefox on my Galaxy Tab). And really, do you want people filling the site with horrific cell phone pictures anyway?

And to the couple of people suggesting an "offline" mode to browse without an Internet connection, short of saving a copy of the entire site (which would be a VERY big file I'm sure) every few hours for offline use, there is no way that could work in any way.

Instead of making an app with so little actual value as to be negligible, the MP people should be working on making the site faster and everything else, which they seem to be working on.

I didn't read nearly close to all of the comments, but if the app was just a more efficient way of browsing the pages without an upload function it'd be great, especially for those of us in school with time to kill when they don't have a computer with them, and people who need privacy t work and would rather browse on their phone that on a computer that everyone can see. It's certainly doable.

also about browsing the 'pages without an internet connection- that's impossible. there are as of writing, 327,154 different creation pages, let along homepages and groups. it'd be impossible, you'd practically need a terabyte hard drive to store it all, maybe more.

EDIT: you say they should concentrate their efforts on smoothing out the site- why not just hire someone?

As someone above said, MP doesn't have the money to hire someone to make and maintain an app. Unlike Flickr or other sites paid for in large part by memberships, all of the money MP gets is from ads, which, from what I've heard, isnt a whole lot of money normally. App developers usually charge a lot of money I imagine, plus the charge to put it on the various markets (I know for the Android market its like 20 USD), plus any cost in the future to make updates and such.

Okay, so I've read every single comment in this thread... and I can say with confidence that even though everyone says its a stupid idea, an App would be helpful. Or at least a mobile version of the site. Because as I type this, I'm on a cell phone touch screen, with tiny buttons, but on the full site. Its not the most efficient thing. A mobile site would have advantages over both an App AND just searching through the mobile browser. It would keep everything on a manageable sized screen so you don't have to slide the page over, it'd make searches and commenting quicker and more efficient, and overall aesthetically pleasing for mobile users who get on to kill some time. But hey, its just my thoughts; my opinions. But some of y'all are SERIOUSLY over thinking this... Just sayin'!

I wholeheartedly agree with you. Look at the Star Wars gallery on Lego.com. That's what MP would become if an app was made. All competence would go flying out the window. Sure, there's nothing wrong with blurry pictures of clone-on-a-plate, but I personally prefer to avoid them.

And all this discussion is semantics anyway, because, like Mr. Phipson said, it's not gonna happen. MP doesn't have the funds to hire an app developer, and it's not economically viable either. There's this thing called cost-benefit analysis, and in this situation, the cost would most likely outweigh the benefit. The funds are better spent making the website better.

But like I said, all this discussion is pointless. :P
