Questions Thread 1

If you have a question (related to the MocOlympics) and it hasn't been answered somewhere else already, post it here.

Only questions asked in this (and further questions threads) thread will be answered.

If you are right now 14, but turn 15 during the MO, do you still qualify for the top TFOL/YFOL prize? (This question doesn't apply to me yet, but it will in two years...)

Here are a few questions for you.

1) Can I use old MOCs? (Just kidding! Don't kill me!)

2) I the sixth paragraph of the MOColympics rules thread, there is a typo, I understand that you had to write that HUGE list of rules, but this typo is a bit more than a mild problem in my book, here it is. "The ONLY expection to this is Figs" I assumed you meant "exception" but this may confuse the living cr*p out of some kids. Could you fix it?

3) Should anyone ask a question that is exceptionally st*pid, would it be fine if MOColympcs contestants answered some of the questions?

1. BANG! Too late...
2. I can't imagine too many not understanding that but we'll probably change it, thanks for the heads-up.
3. Go right ahead, so long as you're sure of the answer.

what is the rule with using lego sets in the mocs?

If you are referring to actual Lego sets, you are NOT allowed as it is not an original build from YOU. The only exception in slight reference to this would be a minifig/sig-fig (for example: Darth Vader, Collectable Mini Figure, or Brickbeard the pirate.)

Hope that answers your question, please clarify if it doesn't. Good luck!

I am planning on doing a ww2 build, so to clarify I am asking if I can use a modified vehicle from an Indiana Jones set. I literally just re-built it, and I have never used it in a Moc.

I am going to take a stab at this, Kevin. I did not create the category but I know that Dennis very much wanted this to be an interpretive build. Seeing that most moments in history have an air of embarrassment to them, I think that simple reference will do. Outside that, I am fairly sure that whatever you choose will suffice.

I will pass this on to Dennis in the Judge's Lounge but I don't think that he was at all adamant about accuracy.

If it is a piece that IS a bed or table or counter like some of the Scala pieces were (Yeah, we all know you have 'em.) I don't see an issue. However, if it is a build from Lego instructions, I'm going to have to say no UNLESS there is enough original variation from you to just simply utilize it as a "technique".

Be careful there though. Originality rates high with us, so regurgitating something we've already seen in a different color won't be very impressive. And considering the exponential variants of two pieces going together then three, I think a bit of originality won't be all that difficult for you to simply fall back on something easy. I doubt the other contestants will show mercy by doing the same.

Kind of a grey area, this, but as this is principally a building competition, what you've built and how it relates to the category forms the major part of any scoring I'll do. A good story that makes sense of what you've built can't hurt, however. I hope that helps.

Are we aloud to paint parts?

As this is not a purist contest, then yes, within the scope of the rules it IS allowed. However...

If you plan on making any mods to any parts, I suggest that you make sure it's THE best paint job ever done. This is a building contest after all, not a modification contest. While you won't be marked down for painting a piece (or two), if it looks bad then may the Lego gods have mercy on your score.

My advice... if it's a bad job, it'll take you out of the running pretty quick. Be careful and be forwarned.

Are we allowed to use photography post production techniques such as:

Black and white or sepia effects.
Selective colour (like in Sin City for example, where it is black and white with a few colours).

I see that the rules say we may use Photoshop etc. to enhance pictures, but wasn't sure if the above would cause any point deductions.

Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Photoshop: You may use photoshop and other types of photo applications for BASIC clean-up work on your pics. Using photoshop to enhance your build is not allowed. This is a building contest, not a computer graphics contest.

Mark is correct: Cleaning up the background ONLY. In fact the rule states that enhancement is NOT allowed (as referenced above.)

Remember to please read the rules carefully, then read them again. And when in doubt, read it a third time.
