Category suggestions

Looking back over past years, it looks like we'll need 67 categories total. This includes the 4 needed for the round one free for all.

Once we get the categories hammered out, we'll place them into the brackets with numbers so that all the matches are decided before we start putting any names in. As per usual, it's the only fair way to do it.

All looking good. Just remember, we have to have a detailed description of each category so the players know what to build.

All looking good. Just remember, we have to have a detailed description of each category so the players know what to build.

Oh, what you see is about as much description as I'm willing to give. Maybe we could indicate "diorama", "sculpture", "vignette" or something. I think players need to interpret the category for themselves, not be pigeonholed by a description that will open up the "box of a thousand questions." I don't have time for that -- none of us do. Yes, that probably will open up a Pandora's Box of Crap when people start whining about the judging, but I'm going to be looking at originality, creativity, execution, and building skill when I judge a model, not if it matches a description. If this will cause problems and headaches for you, my friend, then perhaps I should bow out before it's too late. I don't want to cause you trouble or pain, nor do I want to be on the receiving end of a spinning backfist next June. :)

We don't have to have a final list until about... a week before the games start, give or take. I just need time to be able to put them in to the brackets and dot all the Is and cross the Ts.

I actually have an idea that may play into this... ... but I have to run take care of something at work... right when I sit down... ARGH!

Be back in a few hours to elaborate... hopefully.

Edit: Ok, we have some time to flesh this out but the basic idea is to, early on, give them a round where all they get is a "phrase" and they have to fill in the blanks. I'll come up with a more eloquent description of this in the near future but I think if we cherry pick maybe 20 of those, give or take, that would make the most interesting mocs I think something intersting could come of it.

Also, I understand your point of view on how you see the categories. But not only do the unwashed masses need a little coachin now and then, but we've set the precedent on how the categories work over the past... has it been what... 6 years now?

In any case, I think we have a nice middle ground here on how we can make this work.

I'll get a list together myself over the next few days and post it here.

MocOlympic ideas:

1. It followed me home, can I keep it? Build a moc that shows you bringing home a creature that your parents, or significant other, would definitely not approve of.

2. Chewbacca: Domestic Goddess.

3. Reliving your nightmare. We’ve all had ‘em and they haunt us forever. Create a moc showing us your greatest fear: Falling, spiders, scorpions, Phipson in a bikini, alien abduction, mom’s meatloaf.

4. What does this button do? You know you want to push it. Go ahead; what’s the worst that could happen? Build a large vig detailing the outcome of a simple push of a tiny little button.

5. Does this Classic Space oxygen tank make my posterior look big?

6. County Fair. Deep fried fun for everyone!

7. Miyazaki. Any image, any movie.

8. Album cover. Recreate a classic album cover from the age of vinyl.

9. Four seasons. Show us the progression of something throughout the year.

10. Slapstick this! The Golden Age of movies yielded many that were ultra-violent and uproariously funny. Bring the pain!

11. The best laid schemes o’ mice and men… Things “gang aft agley (often go wrong)” all the time, give us something that shoulda, coulda, woulda worked but didn’t.

12. Unconventional wisdom. No standard brick on brick connections. Show us what you can do when you’re thinking outside the brick.

13. it’s what’s inside that counts. Build a 1:1 ratio of a human organ.

14. Back to school. Your most hated subject, vilified and agonized in Lego.

15. Signifying nothing! Shakespeare. Create a diorama of an epic scene from one of the Bard’s celebrated plays.

16. Abstract expressionistic geometry. Did you really make that out of Lego? Create a design that is hard to believe that it’s truly Lego.

17. Not-so-super hero. Most super heroes are easily identifiable with their capes, super-human strength, cool gadgets, awesome vehicles, golden lassoes, bright green jewelry, big hammers, etc. but what about that one guy or girl that can’t afford a cape but knows they are super. What special power would they manifest and save the world. Build a vig with your new hero and show them being greater than the average Joe.

18. Make matt like Avatar. What is it about this movie other than special effects that makes everyone love this flick? Try to convince matt that he’s completely off base in regards to his dislike of this movie. Build a moc that shows irrefutable proof of the excellence of this film so he can go enjoy the upcoming three sequels.

19. Bored game. It’s raining outside, the power is out, and your battery died on your devise. Looking for something to do, you happen across a cupboard full of board games. Build a moc showing us which one you would choose to play.

20. Wagon’s, HO!!! Westerns are so engrained into our psyche that we don’t even know that we are watching one when we are. Throughout the early days of TV, they were on all channels and in every form imaginable. Build us a moc showcasing a classic Western from the day. TV or movie.

21. Underground world. We’ve seen mocs showing an underwater scene, show us an under the earth scene.

22. So this guy walks into a bar… Build us a joke.

23. See the music. Iconic image from a classic musical.

24. Philip K. D!ck. Author of fantastic sci-fi that is haunting and psychologically horrific, PKD has been the inspiration for iconic sci-fi movies from Blade Runner to A Scanner Darkly. With the recent release of Radio Free Albemuth, celebrate his innovative and frightening distortions of reality by creating a moc depicting these pained visions.

25. Justin Bieber’s secret plan. Mock the media hound in an unabashed and completely irreverent way. You know you want to; no holds barred, cruelty encouraged.

26. Worst movie EVER. Enlighten us as to what we missed out on so that we may all imbibe of the atrocities perpetuated upon innocent blank film. Give us your best of the worst.

27. Han shot first. Oh, it’s true. Time to knock Sir Lucas off that perch and ask the hard questions like: Greedo first on the draw with Solo? The Force is “bacteria”? Why wasn’t Leia in more gold bikinis? Ewoks with red wine or white? Build a moc showing a point in the series that made you go, “Huh?”

28. Extinction exhibit. Build us something that no longer exists.

29. DNA splicing is FUN! Mice with human ears? Yup, it’s real. Show us what happens when this gets out of hand (ha, hand. Get it? It’s a hand. DNA. nevermind.)

30. It ain’t Disney. Build a moc showing the REAL gory detailed version of a beloved Grimm’s fairy tale

31. Moar Powah! Working engine: Pistons, valves, crankshaft, timing, carburation/fuel injection, exhaust, everything.

32. The luckiest man on the face of the Earth. Any iconic and defining sport image.

33. Living and dying in three quarter time. Jimmy Buffett song in Lego.

34. There’s an app for THAT!?!

35. If you could go back in time, what would you steal?

36. Then and now. Technology or architecture.

37. School House Rock.

38. Winner! Lottery fortune spending spree.

39. A rose by any other name… Build a larger than life, fully detailed, perfect flower. Make us smell this moc.

40. Decade. Significant event in world history from the decade you were born in.

I know that there are some similarities with Dennis' list, but I wanted to get these down and out in the hopes that someone else can run with any idea.

Okay, if this pops up twice, I'll delete it. I think it was two specific words in here that have been altered to protect the innocent and the guilty. Here goes nuthin'!

Yeah, that's weird that it took a few days to go to review... I didn't see it last time I looked after you had mentioned it.

Anyway, it's up! (that's what she said)...

Alrighty, I went through some of the past games (mocOs and MocAs) and found some categories that I'd like to see revisited. Some were some that I thought could have been done better, some were ones that I'd love to see done again and some were just old standbys... (rube goldberg).

Nursery Rhymes
These deceptively innocent little poems often conceal darker meanings. Select one of Mother Goose's classic verses and give it a modern twist. How would Hollywood portray the rhyme?

Looks good enough to eat: Build a Lego meal (one to one scale). What's your favorite food?

Once upon a time in a distant future
Build a scene from a classic fairy-tale (preferably something like Brothers Grimm but doesn't have to be) but here's the twist. This scene takes place in the future. How would Rapunzel's hair work (or not work) in space? Does Little Red Riding Hood use a space bike to try to escape from the clutches of the space wolf? Show us your futuristic version of one of these kinds of classic tales.

Domesticons. Transformers normally take sports cars, jet planes, guns and dinosaurs as their alternate forms. We charge you with designing one of a new range of transformers which disguise themselves as domestic appliances.

Rube Goldberg: Always a classic... Build a working Rube Goldberg machine. A machine that performs a simple task using over the top mechanics. You do not HAVE to have a video showing it work (videos are preferred if you can) but at the very least must have pics of the machine working at every stage.

Forced Perspective: Any subject matter you wish, but the main focal point must be a forced perspective shot for that is what you will be judged on, how well you depicted the forced perspective. No size restrictions

Pair Dare: Select two specific kinds of pieces (for example: the 1x2 brick and the jumper-plate) and then create a MOC using ONLY those two specific kinds. Feel free to use multiple colors of those bricks but they must be ONLY those two bricks. Choose wisely!

Alien Landscape.
Is it barren? Are the rivers green, gold or pink? Do the trees grow upside down? Do the Aliens walk around like they are constantly doing the limbo? These are all ideas. Build us your version of an alien landscape. This one is all about beauty 'outside the box'.

No Gravity.
Show us a scene in which the laws of gravity are null.

An elegant moc for a more civilized age.
Replicate any science-fiction object or device from a favorite movie, video game, or other media in life-size scale. Attention to detail matters here!

Bookends
Design a pair of wickedly cool bookends. Show them off holding up your library of Barbie Fairy Princess books, or whatever you read.

Life size LEGO object: Why should minifigs have all the cool stuff? Pick a LEGO “hand held” item (anything from a gun to a broom to a
briefcase or a screwdriver, anything made for minifig hands) and build it in real life scale. You must show a picture of someone holding the item (to show proper scale) and also include a picture of the item next to the minifig sized version of the piece that inspired it. (No brickarms or aftermarket stuff for this category. Choose a LEGO brand item)

"Wizard Duel"
Build us a battle between two mages of the mystic arts. Be sure to include their magical "effects" as they throw spells with wanton abandon. The inspiration for this category came while watching Loony Tunes and I saw this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNvI4tEtzBQ&feature=related Please use ONLY the "wizard world" stuff as your inspiration... We don't need a moc of Daffy Duck blowing up a hotdog in a microwave. You can also find inspiration in the commercials for the “Wizard 101” game https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9K7ApIpY9g Both have the same “feel” we’re looking for.

A certain point of view: Tell us an adventure story, but here's the twist. Tell us the story from the perspective of the villain! People aren't just "evil" for the sake of being evil (expect for Dr. Doofenschmirtz of course) so now's your chance to make us root for the bad guy! What's his motivation? What does he want? And why does he feel that his (evil) way is the only way to get it done? You may choose already existing fiction or create your own, the choice is yours.

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice - Build a scene or story from the filmography of the American director/producer/artist Tim Burton.

Rube Goldberg and Forced Perspective DEFINITELY. I'm not one to toot my own horn, but I want these guys to go beyond what I did. Plus, they are amazingly fun.

Beetlejuice YES. In fact, I like the idea of movie categories but we should bracket them so that one person isn't thrown 4 or 5 movie/TV mocs. That was a bit unbalanced last year.

Yeap, pair dare is in there.

I really liked the bust category as well. I know some of the players (younger ones) weren't too keen on it but I loved it and thought a few of them were really done well. If we need an extra we'll bring that one in.

A few I thought of thus far, with some sibling brainstorm help:

1. Self-Portrait. In non-minifig scale, make a representation of yourself from the bricks. Can be literal or abstract in design.

2. Famous moments in TV history. From the man on the moon to the OJ trial, build a television famous moment that captivated viewers.

3. Fantastical Houses. (Thinking aloing the lines of Rapunzel's tower, Baba Yaga's house, Howl's Moving Castle even, etc. Will need to pick some that define the category without nullifying cool builds.

4. Awkward Family Photos. We've all seen 'em, or been part of one. Vignette probably.

5. In an ideal world... Show one thing that you would change to make the world a better place. Will it be universal ice cream, or universal healthcare? You choose!

6. Chimera. Make an animal/human creature combination. Functionality of the combination is key.

7. Marvel vs D.C., one-on-one. Choose two superheroes, one form each universe, who have similar powers and pit them against each other in contests fitting of their powers. Would Quiksilver or the Flash win in a footrace? 20x20 max.

8. Human Evolution. It is known that anatomically modern humans emerged from our evolutionary lineage sometime between 300,000 and 400,000 years ago. However, our hominid ancestors had living in Africa (and elsewhere) millions of years prior to this event. Build a creation that represents some aspect of the human lineage before the emergence of Homo sapiens sapiens, be it the skull of Ardipithecus ramidus or a minifig scale scene of a Neanderthal hunting party. (I got carried away in this description, it will probably need to be made less wordy.)

9. Wearable clothing. Historical or modern, we need proof you (or a chosen model) can put it on.

10. Sacrilege! Lego may be your favorite toy, but build what you would be playing with if the interlocking Danish blocks hadn't filled your child(or adult)-hood. 1:1 scale.

OK, here goes...

1. Rain, Steam and Speed : Build us a moc (can be vignette, painting, anything) inspired by the work of JMW Turner.

2. Robinson Crusoe In New York : The castaway from another world isn't on a desert island; he's in a bustling modern city. Show us what happens.

3. matt's idea for a fully detailed engine is hereby seconded!

4. Set Bricks To Stun : Build your own story, set anywhere in the Star Trek universe.

5. Good News Everyone! You're going to build a diorama depicting any scene from the animated Futurama series.

6. So THAT'S How They Did It : Show us how the ancient Egyptians REALLY built the Pyramids. The sillier and more fantastical, the better.

7. Gotta Catch 'Em All : Design and build a new, never seen before Pokemon. Show us what it can do.

8. Yellow, Red, Blue : A mosaic challenge, build any painting by Wassily Kandinsky. Do not use software to help you.

9. Step Right Up : Build a working fairground ride.

10. Smack The Judges : Feel free to build a tribute to THAT 'awsum' Halo moc, or do something unspeakable to a Homemaker figure, or maybe build a clown tormenting Chewbacca.... show us what you got!

More soon!

Ok, I've gotten most of the brackets filled out. We're in need of about... 7 or 8 more categories.

I can easily throw some generic ones in there from years past. Things like Mech, Castle or a general LOTR category are easy standbys but I'll leave it open for a bit to see what you guys think.

If there's anything on there that we DON'T like, let me know and we can change it around.

I also still have the final match to be determined. Again, we need something... epic.

And finally, for round one... we need 4 (or so) categories that kind of flow together for a general theme for the players to choose from. Thoughts on this? We've used things like "seasons" before which I liked but would rather not repeat if we can avoid it.

OK, Here's more:

11. Wall and Piece : Recreate a work by the street artist Banksy, and build an urban setting for it.

12 : Lift Me Up : I need a crane, any type of crane, any scale. Build it for me and make it work!

13 : Living in a Box : Any building by the architect Le Corbusier. Microscale.

Still thinking of more...

14. We Are The Champions! : Build the podium celebration after any major motor race - it can be F1, Indy 500 or Le Mans. Let the champagne (or milk) flow!

15. And I'd Have Gotten Away With It... : Build the final scene from a Scooby Doo cartoon. It can be an actual episode or your own storyline.

16. The Sword In The Stone : Build a scene from the many stories surrounding the semi-mythical King Arthur.

17. Railway Pioneers : Build an accurate replica - any scale - of an early steam locomotive of your choice. Link to source material.

18. (for 1st round maybe) Decades : Build a moc that captures the spirit of any of the following eras: 1940s, 1960s, 1980s, 2000s.

19. First, Peel The Otter : Show us the result of an absurd recipe.

20. Planet Earth : Show us a wonder of the natural world.

NEXT to a pale horse! Build us the fifth horseman of the apocalypse. Seeing that his other brothers are of such a serious nature, show us the more humorous side of the end of days. Irreverence and silly are a must.

MechaBFF! Show all of us here your feminine side. Time to use the pieces from all your Friends, Scala, and Belleville sets to build a mecha that is colorful, dainty, frilly, girly, and completely nontraditional. Make it faaaaabulous!

Just a couple ideas, thinking of more.

Okaaay... Not exactly my strong suite, but I have a couple things.

If you know me, you know that I love building in micro-scale. I think it would be perfect for a Round 1 category. Challenging and very generic.

1. Micro-scale: Build anything (be it from a movie, a book, or something architectural like a skyscraper or historical landmark) in micro-scale.

2. Working for Lego: You've landed your dream job and are now a Lego Master Builder. Build a set for any one of Lego's existing themes.

3. Catapult! Build a working catapult or trebuchet.

4. A Duel for the Ages: Jousting was one of the most popular sports in the Middle-Ages. Create an epic battle between two mighty warriors of old.

5. Classic Colours: Build a model using only the original Lego colours: red, white, yellow, black, and blue.

I also really like the "Everything is Awesome" category from the MocAthalon.

Kodak Moment! Take a famous photograph and duplicate it in Lego with all the refinements and subtlety of the original. Show us that you can capture even the slightest, out of focus detail in the background.

Absolutely loved last years Pre-1970 Sci-fi Classic Film. That might be a great one to revise. Maybe make it a pre-2001: A space Odyssey movie category.

Gerry Anderson is GOD! Build an iconic vehicle and/or base from any of Mr. Anderson's portfolio: Space: 1999, Captain Scarlet, Thunderbirds. Details should be very high on the priority list as it was for him.

Syd Mead is GOD! Replicate one of Syd's visionary and futuristic designs in Lego.

Looks great! I really like the category for the final round and the categories for the first round are great and quite fun sounding. The only thing is that Self-portrait is in the second round twice. As for something I really want in, I'd like to see a jousting category, so maybe you could replace one of the Self-Portraits with it? I did write one up, I think.

Just thought of something, the "Human Evolution" category might be offensive to someone, depending on who gets it. I personally would be fine with it but I know some people who would not. How about tweaking it a bit; let's say for example, "build something from a prehistoric cave drawing." What do you think?

Personally, I'm really happy to see it there; if the builder is religious, he or she doesn't have to believe it - people can learn to simply not be offended, they'll do better at everything! To turn it around: as an atheist, I wouldn't mind getting a 'Build a Bible Story' category...

I see the point of view; however, some people on the pages also believe that Creationism is offensive. I see it simply as a "full of potential" build with speculation and interpretation galore. (might save that paragraph for later.)

This came up last year in the first round with the signs of the zodiac, and always seems to be a prevalent murmur/shout. But if Lego is a "learning toy", then maybe it's time for them to learn. Not just building skills, dexterity, and visual acuity, but also tolerance, acceptance, and wisdom.

If the builders' faith is not strong enough to withstand being in the contest with another worldview, then they still have the option of bowing out. Or perhaps growing a pair.

This is just my humble opinion, Mark. Please don't think that I am lashing out at you. It's pretty much a given that zealotry will rear up at some point in the games, I for one am not opposed to letting it. If they feel like defending their beliefs then this will be a much needed exercise for them as their future would be quite grim without a honed edge.

I have never refused to take up that gauntlet and will forever do the same when they choose to throw it down.

Besides, it's fun. ;) Almost as fun as building would be for that category.

I say keep it as is and let them roll the hard eight.

Agreed.

There isn't any other "castle" build in the categories, other than fairy tale ones. Might be a great idea to include something along the lines of a joust. Gear people up for the finale in a way. Might put it in the early round and save the other self portrait for the later one.

Totally agree with you. I think a little more castle won't hurt.

I totally see both of your opinions. And please, don't apologise for speaking your mind. I'm not offended easily. I prefer someone's honest opinion and I respect it, even if I don't agree with it, because everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and ideals and I would want them to respect mine as well.

As for the category, and any other category: I don't allow my beliefs to prevent me from building something, even if I don't believe it. Last years first round category is a prime example. And, although I don't believe in macro-eveolution (humans coming from apes and whales from cows, etc.), I do believe and I think it's reasonable to believe that things do "evolve", adapt, and slightly change over time, be it plant, animal, and even human. We have come a long way since the stone ages.

Thank you once again. I've changed my mind about the category and agree that it might be fun for whoever gets it. Even if he or she doesn't like it, they could build something about the stone ages as compared to the bronze ages and how people became "smarter."

Thankyou Mark. Funny story - I nearly didn't enter last year because of the R1 category... I didn't object to it, I just wasn't 'feeling' it; I've always thought of astrology as vaguely silly foolishness and wasn't interested. Still managed to find something to engage me enough to snap a few bricks together and learned something on the way. I hope that opportunity remains in the MOs in the future.

Yep, if jousting is slid into the other portrait slot, the categories, to me, will look great. Nice work putting them in order, Chris!

I was originally avoiding the jousting category simply because it was so close to the final round.

However, Matt made a good point about it being a sort of "gear up" for it so...

Lemme run on over there and switch it out.

I had a typo in my evolution category, says "ancestors had living" and not "had been living". Thanks

Also, love the final round. :)

Looks great! Thank you, Chris!

I really like how it's looking, however, I noticed some spelling and grammar mistakes here and there. Would you mind if I fixed it up (in a separate comment, of course)?

Absolutely not. If this category is changed in any way, I'm out. The rule is if you don't like the category for any reason, don't complain: just don't play.

Haven't read it, Chris, but I trust you. Not with my wife or my life, but otherwise
