Challenge 1: Architects wanted!

Welcome, citizens of The United Studs of Marshallll-ron!
Our country has prospered in these recent times. Ever since we overthrew the government of the previous empire in this land back in 2015 (5 years ago) we have managed to thrive, with the creation of many great and powerful cities.

As of yesterday, we have an important announcement: Mr. Brickington has plans to establish a new city, larger and greater than all the others, in the exact center of the country!*

But he can't do this alone. Mr. Brickington needs your help! He needs architects to help him design the city. Do you have what it takes to submit to him a micro-scale model of the city?

Rules:
-Build a micro-scale version of what you want Legopolis to look like. Layout and style of buildings are up to you, be creative! (it should have a modern/near-future look to it though)
-Some buildings (town hall, a variety of businesses, areas for homes, etc must be included. Everything that a real city would have)
-Anyone, including Staff, may enter. Judging will be done by whatever staff members don't enter.
-Entries are due Saturday, December 28.

Judging:
Build: /10. In this contest we're focusing on design and layout over complexity, main focus should be on the layout and style.

Layout: /10. How well is the city organized?

Style: /5. Do the buildings have a distinct architectural style?

Presentation: /5

Prizes:
The winner will receive 5 points (unless winner is a staff member). Everyone will receive 3 points just for entering.
In addition, the winning entry will be used to design the Legopolis map, so the layout of your city may determine the location for the entire game!

Good luck and have fun! Remember that entries are due on Saturday, December 21.

*Give or take 50 feet.

Why do you have to put it on top of Lebanon? I'm sure it's a nice town... or at least, I bet that it has some pleasant features. Anyway, I'm sure we can build a better town. By the way, welcome to Kansas, everyone! This may be a stretch, but all members of the Lego of Cityopolis Contest Group are invited to join the floundering attempt at a Kansas Lego User Group (KANLUG) right here on MOCpages! Of course, you don't HAVE to join if you don't want to, but I'm desperate for Kansans or even a reasonable facsimile thereof.

And when did I ever say that the United Studs of Marshallll-Ron occupied the exact same space as the USA did? For all you know, the USM could have taken over Mexico and Canada as well...

By overthrowing one empire, how much territory did we take? The entire world? Wow, that would mean that the City of Legopolis is in the Earth's core!

That would be interesting to see a city built on the center of the earth. It could give you some extra points for originality.

That also sounds fine, cities in the world today have styles from ancient times (Roman and such) so it would make sense that Legopolis could be similar.

Well the overall style should be focused on modern/futuristic, but incorporating multiple styles is fine if you can tell it's a city in the near future. I just said that so we don't get any people trying to build things like castles and medieval villages and such.

No, he's right. See, my thinking was, to get the most out of everyone, instead of sticking to one theme, people could build in any theme they wanted, not just castle with the LOM or Sci-Fi with that Steal Metal thingy that was around a year or two ago, and people could also build in modern style if they wanted. There would be transitional areas that would allow Spastle to happen and stuff like Ninjago where the past meets with the present, in a way. If it is supposed to be Semi-futuristic, my idea no longer works. I was thinking that people would move from area to area like a real city, but could still go back to their own world away from the others, kind of like returning to your house from downtown.

Since it's only about 10-20 years in the future, it doesn't have to be too futuristic, you can probably get away with a mostly modern build.

Would it be good or bad to have the city be modular, with the buildings able to change postions and such? Also, is the middle of The United Studs Mountain-ish or flat?

Modular or not doesn't really matter, but it would probably be a nice bonus. You can decide the geography for yourself.

It can still copy styles. Similar to how many buildings in the US are based on Roman architecture styles.

And perhaps the old countries weren't completely destroyed, just taken over...

That would mean that, if I made mine modular, and it actually won, which is only a small chance, but possible, then I could change the layout around to fit what the admins had in mind, if necessary.

I think what it really means is you make the city a living being and it is constantly changing. Stories become either really interesting or insanely complicated. Imagine how people would adjust to a city that always changed. One day you house is next to an amusement, the next day it is next to that guy who's dog carps on everyone elses lawns. But depending on the story, it could make things really interesting.

He means that he can adjust the layout of the city slightly to make it better for the map, not constantly change it :P

That sounds good, it doesn't make a big difference though.

I really like the idea I had, but it just doesn't fit what was asked. I could still work the shape, but it just wouldn't be the same. I need to do a lot of stuff for this if I'm going to do it.

If I were to do a sketch only, I'd have it done really quick, but I'd rather just build.

I know that there is the saying of "You can never have too many of any one piece" but holy carp! I have no need for that many of those guys and especially not the olive ones everyone keeps getting at stores. They're great, I get it, but when you have no other olive pieces, it's kind of a waste to get 1000 olive cheeses. The best MOC I've seen that uses them and well, is Paul Versmeech's because it is humorous and it doesn't look like God puked on the roof of your house.

Having that many dark bley cheese slopes would be useful :P (and I know from experience that having 500 clear cheeses is also useful)
But yeah, having that many olive green ones is basically useless.

So, Halhi, have you admins decided which of the two city plans made the cut?

I don't know if we're going to continue this; we're not getting enough participation to justify the effort of running it...

It'd be a shame to see such a cool contest never happen. Perhaps you can postpone it until later into The Tourney, when some of us will be eliminated?

I'd rather have dark grey cheese than tan, tan isn't all that useful most of the time. Anyway, Silver Mine Shootout is the best for landscaping pieces.

I'm planning a pretty big (24x24) desert/beach scene for my LOM character, using most of those slopes... this thing has more tan than I ever thought I could use... but I have a plan for almost every single one of those pieces... except maybe for all of those windows. :P

Rant over. Sorry Halhi, that's all in a reply to you. :3

And now I'm going to sound like such a hypocrite when I go to the Lego store probably tomorrow and get a bunch of olive cheese (according to Stephen, they have some). Well, at least I'm also planning on getting the crocodile Legend beast, so I'll have some other olive green pieces...

And when did I ever say that the United Studs of Marshallll-Ron occupied the exact same space as the USA did? For all you know, the USM could have taken over Mexico and Canada as well...

Can this micro-city be as creative as we want? Or are there rules to how you can build it? The reason is that I have a very good idea (if I can pull it off) but it's defiantly outside the box.

This group has been dead for A LONG TIME. You can build for it, but it won't go anywhere.

Thanks for that. Why do you think it's dead? LETS RESURRECT IT!

I've never seen a group be successful at doing that.
