Welcome to Round 5, the semi-finals, of the Middle Earth Lego Olympics! If you’re still not feeling 100% certain about how everything works, you can brush up on the rules here:

http://mocpages.com/group_conversation.php?id=23408&topicid=92891

Please carefully read all of the following before asking any potential questions:

Round 5 ends at 11:59pm MOCpages time on 3/2/14. That gives you just under ten days to build!

The theme for this round is Hobbit Quotes. As in the previous rounds, the quotes are open to interpretation. Some quotes will be trickier to tackle than others. You can take the basic route and build the scene from which the quote originates, or you can build some other creative MOC that somehow relates. It’s up to you! All we ask is that you REFRAIN from including other story themes in your entry (e.g. Star Wars, Harry Potter, Superheroes, etc.). Seeing as you were all successful in the preceding rounds, we expect that you understand how this works by now!

Required for all Round 5 entries:

-Title your entry: MELO Round 5: [your name] vs. [your opponent’s name]

-State your bracket (Barad Dur or Orthanc) FIRST THING in the intro box. As there are two sets of judges, this immediately informs them if you’re in their bracket or not. It’s a courtesy!

-Provide a WORKING link to your opponent’s homepage or entry (depending on which of you posts first), placed preferably near the top of your entry’s page. You can also include a link to the MELO homepage if you’d like (appreciated, but not required).

-State the category you’re playing in, preferably near the top of your page.

And now, without further ado, I give you the Round 5 categories and match-ups!

Hobbit Quotes

-Barad Dur Bracket: Your judges are Blake Bear, Mark Murphy, and Ian Spacek. The judges are not required to give feedback about their voting decisions.

Grant Davis vs. KW Vauban

“Never laugh at live dragons!”

-Orthanc Bracket: Your judges are Max Pointner, Michael Kringe, and Paul Vermeesch. The judges are not required to give feedback about their voting decisions.

J-Rod Smith vs. Li Li
“Far over the misty mountains cold. To dungeons deep, and caverns old.”

I use bricklink as my priority lego income, I haven't bought a set in over 10 months. Have you tried switching to searching by "Highest Quantity" ? that is what I use to find large enough quantities and then just compare prices.

I don't think I have. I'll have to try it! Good luck in Round 5!

Would it be all right if I made my own paper wings, if I include Smaug? I would normally use pre-made wings from a set, but I don't have any in red.

While it'd be safer to brick-build them, I think you could probably get away with paper.

Sooo... Like the last round of the melo I had a debate tournament that ended yesterday, we originally left at 9:00 and its a 7 hour drive from Spokane Washington, to my house back at Portland, my moc is nearly done except for a few cheese tiles I am going to insert, so 5 hours would have been plenty of time to get that finished and take pictures... Then this happened: www.weather.com/weather/map/interactive/Oregon+IL+USIL0900:1:US (Scroll over to Oregon and Washington and notice the Ice with freezing rain and snow) So pretty much at this point I am not gonna make it home tonight despite my best shot at convincing my mom to risk the roads :( If I could get a day or 2 of grace time that would be appreciated. I would have liked to not be a bother but the weather is out of my control, I would understand if I have to just forfeit regardless though. Thanks!

Well, I'm not a judge, but you should get a few extra days, especially at this point!!

I agree, if I was in Grant's position, or if anyone was in his position and had made it this far,it would be really helpful to have an extra day or something. Although I'm no judge, I can totally relate.

ATTENTION ALL SEMI-FINALISTS AND JUDGES! There will be a slight delay in the end of Round 5. Grant Davis made a request that the other judges and I are going to discuss and address. If the majority of the judges feel that Grant should be granted some extra time, we'll give him 48 hours to enter. If the judges decide against letting him enter, we'll start judging in 24 hours and KW gets a free pass to the final. We'll keep you all posted as to further developments!

Grant has been given 48 hours to get home and post. If his entry isn't up by then, then we'll go ahead with the judging and KW gets a free pass.
