I'm so pleased you are doing this again guys, it was a lot of fun last year and I'm keen to have another go.

What might make it more of a challenge is to have a requirement for one build from the bricks chosen to have a specific function. For example:

Limit - 100 bricks
number of alternate builds - 2 minimum
function - at least one build MUST be used for mining

Obviously this is just a suggestion, I await the official rules with anticipation.

Try making a hard suit rather than a walker. far fewer pieces as the cockpit doesn't need to be enclosed with a canopy.

Great to have you onboard! I've posted a pic in LDD2POVray Flickr group, so I'm hoping that there might be a few more LDD entries this time.

As for a theme, we do have one but it's not mining: that would just encourage David's lunar cheese obsession!

I'm not making any promises as of yet, but if a minifig was required, would it have to be a classic space fig? I think I have a yellow torso and then a white one that is also half black. I mean, I've seen them in my collection somewhere, but I don't actually have classic space. I've got pletny of Blacktron, M-Tron, and Ice Planet torsos though. The family that donated all their college aged kids' collection to me when I was 8 had plenty of those guys. :)

I can't see why you can't have a stand in. Not everyone can get hold of classic space figures, especially since the line was discontinued over 10 years ago.

We're not that fussy about authentic CS minifigs. The idea of this competition is that you don't have to spend your £ or $ or Euros at Bricklink in order to take part and join the fun. Indeed, this year's rule might make you want to use figs that definitely aren't from any of the Lego space themes. Stay tuned!

It'll finish roughly the same time as last years, so you might have time to get a build in during January. Or you could try LDD on a laptop. I spend my winters working in Switzerland, teaching skiing. The end date sort of depends on when David and I have written up all of our comments (roughly 7,000 words each last time) and in my case this might be impacted by a large dump of snow that will need skiing on :)

Yes, you're correct in all of the particulars. I think that last year we agreed that a minifig (with oxygen tanks) counts as a single piece but I'll check that with David and we'll update the "Rules" section.

That's the thing though, half the challenge here is choosing a combination that might be an official spin off set, like Ice Planet, MTron and Space Police were. But keeping the original aesthetic.

It's not as easy as just building any spacey type vehicle and slapping Classic Space colours on it (which I've done in the past).

Perhaps part of this year's challenge is to build something that retains the ethos of CS but without the standard colour scheme to flag up to viewers that that is what your build is about? Who chose grey, blue and trans-yellow back in 1978? What if they'd chosen something else instead?

I managed to bring it to 100 exactly, but it really lost something in the looks department. Now I have to reproduce it in LDD to be able to dismantle and rebuild it at will, for the secondary builds. I think I can make a big robot out of its parts :)

Today on the Eurobricks forums there was a post on the new "The Lego Movie" book and sets, and a member found an image of what looks like a spaceship with a Classic Space color scheme. The CS spaceship model is apparently going to be a set. The link to the forum post can be found here:

Seems like Classic Space is coming back.

It looks awesome! I probably won't buy it though! I am more into parts.

Okay, so where does one get the background and the Lego fonts I see some of you are using? I may need them if I can ever get this build to work...

It looks like a good field of entries. I like what people have done with some of the newer colors, like lime and orange.

I really hoped to have something for this contest but it is much more difficult than I anticipated to limit myself to under 100 parts...and classic space to boot...arrrrgggh maybe next year! Good luck to all the participants!

You said it man! I kept having to scale back my build as I was hitting the 100 piece limit pretty quickly!

I hope you'll post whatever you've built on MOCpages. I think that quite a few folk have struggled with the parts limit. I've also seen some builds that people built before they knew about the colour rules this year.

Guilty. Luckily, I saw the rules in time and even managed to incorporate the old design into the new one's presentation :D

Wow, thanks for the vote of confidence! Personally I think Pico van Grootveld is the likely winner, although there are several strong contenders! I don't envy the Davids having to choose between them all.

He has a stron entry, but I think your color theme is just catchier (and not done with color replacement, which lowers a bit his entry's worth to my eyes, even if I actually love it).

Wow! That must have been a slow one! Everything that I've bought from BL sellers in the UK usually arrives within 5 or 6 days.

We have a little twist this year, but you'll have to wait to next week to find out what!

Sorry David and David I almost finished mine . I placed an order back on Dec 20th and I still haven't received it yet . Hopefully you guys will do this again next year.

Well guys, a thousand apologies for not getting anything posted here. I managed to let the time fly past and procrastinate until there was no more time. I haven't really spent any time admiring all the builds fully either. Hopefully in the next few weeks I can pore over the fine collection. From what I have seen, the David's have their work cut out for them. Good luck everyone! Spectacular show!

Hmm... A 7 rounder in the mocolympics who says he's gonna enter another contest in the next weeks and procrastinates... Where did I see that before? ;-)

The Holidays had them suspending shipping until the 11th. Of course I didn't get that info until after I placed my order. Oh well, I have lots of medium blue pieces now! :-D

I use the same seller every time and they are local to me and I usually get the orders in 1 -2 days.

Woohoo! I'm now in proud possession of LL918.
Met David Alexander Smith and he's a top bloke.
Found out we're practically neighbours as he only lives a couple of miles from me so I was able to pick it up.
I shall post pics of my new old cherished spaceship soon.
