Round 3 matchups!

 Group admin
Congratulations everyone on making it to round 3!

Below you will find your matchups and categories.

Dates: Round 3 starts NOW and will end at 11:59 PM on Sunday, October 13th.

Title:
Your entry must be titled: MocOlympics (may be shortened to MO) round 3 "you" vs "Your opponent." You may title it anything you wish after that but that must be the opening of the title.

Category description:
Near the TOP of the entry you must state what category you are playing in. Feel free to simply copy and paste your category from this thread or type in the title of the category, your choice.

Unless your category specifically calls for it you may only build ONE moc per entry. This does not mean that you can't have multiple parts to the same entry. What we're trying to avoid here is if the category is cars, you can't build 7 different cars, only one. Any clarification needed just ask in the question thread.

Links:
Preferably somewhere near the top of your post, you MUST have a WORKING link to your opponent’s page. If you post first then linking to their homepage is fine. If you post second, please link to their entry. You do not HAVE to change the link to their entry after they post (if you post first). That is your choice. You do NOT have to have a working link back to the main MocOlympics group. You’re free to add it if you wish but it is NOT required.

You must add your entry to the group pool. Once you add it to the group, that's it, it's OURS and NO changes may be made. If you make a change and we find out about it, you will be disqualified and your opponent will advance to the next round. We STRONGLY suggest that you get feedback from others and make any needed changes BEFORE adding it to the group. The judges will NOT look at it until it's added to the group.

Once you and your opponent have posted and added your entries to the group, the judges will vote on the mocs. There will be three judges for each matchup (divided by the brackets). You must receive 2 out of 3 votes to advance to the next round. The judges are NOT required to write full, detailed comments with their votes (but may if they choose to). The only thing required by a judge is which moc they are voting for. Each judge’s decision is final.

Your judges are:
Brackets 1 and 2: Mr. Xenomurphy, David Alexander Smith, LukeClarenceVan The Revanchist

Brackets 3 and 4: Chris Phipson, Ian Spacek, Annie Corder

As usual, please post any questions in the "Question" thread as we can't promise we'll see it here amongst all the chatter.

Good luck!

Bracket 1

Blake Baer vs David the Fire Ninja
Gritty Reboot.
Take a lighthearted piece of media from your childhood, and imagine what it'd look like if Hollywood turned it into a dark and gritty film.

Jacob Huppi vs David .
Mighty Empire: Build us a creation from Roman times. A battle, a house, a boat, whatever you want. Of course, the more historically accurate the better.

General X (aka Superspy X) vs Simon S.
Build a scene from your favorite anime. It has to be a Japanese animation, whether it's a TV show or a movie. Please tell us WHICH anime your creation is from (and provide some sort of link to something for comparison).

Jackson Williams vs Mark McPeek
Flower-Power
Build a complete flower bouquet and present it in a vase (the vase doesn’t have to be Lego, but it can be).

Bracket 2

Elliott Feldman vs Lego Junkie
Domesticons. Transformers normally take sports cars, jet planes, guns and dinosaurs as their alternate forms. We charge you with designing one of a new range of transformers which disguise themselves as domestic appliances.

Chris Roach vs Justin Knelsen
Gender Swap.
Take a piece of media, be it Batman, Sherlock Holmes or LOTR, and build a short story in which all the characters have swapped genders!

Nick Barrett vs Ben Merrill
BattleTech: This is this year's "Mech" category. Choose a battlemech from the BattleTech universe and build it for us! You do NOT have to build a background scene to go with it, we're judging the mech here so plain backgrounds are allowed if you wish (you may build a scene for it if you wish but the judging will be on the mech portion). So, who will you choose? Clan or Inner Sphere?

Pif 500 vs Bob the inconceivably invincible
The King of Bricks
Build a mashup scene from two books (or movies) by renowned horror author Stephen King. How about Cujo guarding the pet cemetery? Please tell us which two stories you are mashing.

Bracket 3

Deus "Big D." Otiosus vs Delatron 3000
Automata. Build a moving creation. Deploy those cogs and cranks to bring your moc to life with just the turn of a wheel or press of a button. You do not HAVE to have a video of your creation in action but it would really help if you did.

commmodore legolas vs Stormbringer
Happy happy, joy joy. Capture the surreal heart of Ren and Stimpy in brick form.

Matthew Oh vs Stuart Lucas
Rube Goldberg: Always a classic... Build a working Rube Goldberg machine. A machine that performs a simple task using over the top mechanics. You do not HAVE to have a video showing it work (videos are preferred if you can) but at the very least must have pics of the machine working at every stage.

John 55555 vs Zoltŕn K.
Shortcut to Mushrooms: We've all seen huge Lord of the Rings dioramas depicting equally huge skirmishes, but we want to see something a bit different. Build a scene from the LOTR books or movies which shows a normal, peaceful, Middle Earth day. We might finally get a Tom Bombadil MOC out of this one.

Bracket 4

Matt rowntRee vs Legopard
Back to the Futuron!: Even if you weren't around during the 80's, everyone has heard of the time traveling adventures of Marty McFly! Build a "SET" from Back to the Future that you think should be released. (Futuron style not required, it was a play on words.)

That Steam Guy vs BrickMaster Tommy
MOCer style.
Every MOCer has a unique building style, some more "signature" than others. Pick your favorite builder and try to replicate their style in your entry. You may build any type of moc you wish but when we look at it we want to say “Oh, he built that like “X” would have.

nik ramage vs Eric Rathke
The human cyborg: Think of this as another "Lego wear" category. Your job is to build an extension of the human body, turning yourself into a Lego/human cyborg. You can go as little or as big as you'd like. Anything from just a glove/arm extension, to a helmet to an entire body prosthesis (if you have the time). What sort of upgrades would you give yourself?

Adam Brunsting vs Grant W.
MicroCastle: It's all in the name. Build us a castle themed MOC in a scale smaller than minifig scale.

When you say 'the video page' that means I need to upload it first to Flickr or YouTube, doesn't it? Any recommendations?

Yes, for a human. As a matter of fact, we want a picture of you (or someone you've conned into helping you) actually wearing it. Look back at past MocOlympics and MocAthalons at the "lego wear" category (or just search Lego Wear in the search bar) to see what we're expecting in this category.

Good luck!

Are you specificaly just looking for complexity here? Or is it any moving/working MOC having similar chance (like of I made a MOC with one simple function, which would do amazing thing)?

The movement is key, and should be the focus of the build. One simple function that does amazing things could of course be better than several complex but uninteresting operations.

I have another question concerning the human cyborg category. (Sorry) you've made it pretty clear that a person is only allowed to have one entry, does that mean my opponent and I can only make a helmet or a glove and not the two? And if they were connected in some way, like related to one another, but not physically connected, would it count as one or two? I hope that makes sense, I just want to make sure I have what you guys are looking for.

Thank you!

(pssst... start putting these in the question thread please)

Ahem, anyway...

For this category, you can build a glove and a helmet (or whatever) and they count as one entry. The same as if you built two arms, two legs, a helmet and a body piece it would be "one" entry (and wouldn't THAT be cool!).

Now... if you built two left gloves (for instance) then that would be against the rules. Follow?

You should not take anything too seriously, especially on the internet.

My votes are in. Sorry for the brief comments this round but there's some "stuff" going on that's limiting my time online this week (don't worry, everything's fine, just stuff). Good luck to everyone! All of your entries were just amazing!

Hey, "my" judges, can you maybe just vote on mine and number 3000's entries as for who would have won? I am kind of curious, because I have worked on my entry too hard to remain objective.

Help me out here deus in spite of the fact that you have never, nor will ever, hold me in any regard. First, you miss the deadline. And not by the ten minutes you claimed but rather 21 minutes after midnight when Ian closed it. Second, seeing that Ian and the judges left it open 21 minutes for a certain grace period and, knowing that they are understanding time-wise, you neglected to ask for 4 minutes of leniency (the time it took for you to post your response to Ian's closing.) Third, you stated in your comments that you would concede even if you were permitted to submit the moc. And now you want to be judged in the same light of competition? Is your idea of competition to insult the games, demean the judges, and disregard the rules?

Let it go, you lost, move on. I think it's time to be a role model and stand by your own words: Concede. That is more admirable than to ask to be included after all that has transpired. In fairness and respect to Delatron 3000 as well.

As do I gentlemen. But that is why I am competing. I abide by the rules and obey the judges. Above all I 100% respect my opponent. Forgive me if what I saw was viewed with a highly speculative and cynical eye, but I saw a nonchalant and flippant lack of respect for Delatron. To that, I will defend all and call out everyone.

Asking for feedback in a compare and contrast light is one thing, asking to be judged in spite of the winner already being declared is another.

I apologize for my harshness in this case, but I am too circumspect not to be. I hope you understand that I see that paths are chosen, not given.

I guess I'm not as sensitive as some people, but I see no problem with constructive comparison. I respect people who desire advice, and I know Deus well enough that I realize his request is no slight towards Stuart, merely a desire for objectivity. Also, I'd like to think that Stuart can handle, and indeed appreciate, a little advice and perspective as well. If not, well, that's his prerogative, and speaking for him shows more a lack of respect than requesting to be measured against him. Out of my personal respect for both Stuart and Deus, I would neither weigh in without Stu's input nor dismiss Deus's request out of hand, were I judging their bracket.

Please understand Luke that I am not speaking FOR anyone but myself. I see actions, and inactions, and follow-up requests as a slight towards everything in this arena. The game, the competitors, the rules, and the judging. I am completely open to, and in fact encourage, all types of feedback on every moc posted. It is after all why every single one of us is here. These games, however, are a different matter. Rules are in play as are we competitors. Exceptions are acceptable and understandable, but this is a silly breach of that bit of judging. Feedback, comments, comparisons, and the like are always there and present on MP; the decision of the judges, however, should be final and immutable.

I agree to, of course, let Delatron and deus speak for themselves, that goes without saying. But my opinion is as much valid and sound as theirs in this matter. I wanted deus to submit his moc to go up against Delatron's. I am above all entertained by this competition's showings. I think it would have been a close call with equally valid and sound arguments pro and con. I want that. What I don't want is this petite dance. I'm in. I'm out. I'm in again. Enough with this silliness and get on to the next round.

I'm not going to disclose for whom I would've voted, but I am willing to share some thoughts on your entry. I liked your realistic approach. I thought the volcano was a clever idea. And I have respect for anyone who can design a "moving MOC." The "moving" element has always struck me as so daunting a task that I've yet to tackle such a creation myself. As for a critique, you seem to like the word hate, so I'll speak plainly: I hated your music selection for the video. I had to mute it to survive.

I trust that's satisfactory enough? Because it's all you're getting from me! :D

I see your point, but it's moot - I cannot lose a round I have already won and thus deserve to be in the next round by virtue of following the rules. Anything else is just opinions and air and won't bother me.

Besides, I would have won anyway.

Another MOCOlympics, another drama generated by an attention-seeker. I seem to be a magnet for them, yet I do nothing apart from turn up and follow the rules.

I would like to quote Deus, responding to my comment on his build for this round;
“Why concede? Simple. I love to compete, and I was pretty sure I had a good chance to win the whole competition. What I do not want, on the other hand, is help. If I missed the deadline, that is it. Nobody deserves any different treatment than anybody else. At least not in a positive sense.”

Based on that strongly expressed criticism of different, positive treatment to anybody else, I really don’t see how he can expect to be judged in a contest he has quit from unless he wants to admit to being a total hypocrite.

The judges are free to leave what comments on either build that they wish to, however the record posted above states that I won 3-0. Chris gave me his vote, Ian has abstained and Annie is finished judging, without comment on mine or Deus’ builds, so I believe that is it for ‘official’ comment from our bracket judges. Anything else is opinion only.
I welcome constructive feedback – as I said in response to LCV’s comment on my R1 build, it’s not often offered but always gratefully received. However what Deus is asking for is more than feedback, it is more than ‘constructive comparison’ or ‘advice’, it is more than ‘curiosity’, it is a judgement call after the result and is certainly different treatment than anyone else who has quit. I suspect he is looking for some sort of small, back-door victory: “Look, I might have won if not for the time limit / he only got through because I didn’t post/ etc.”, like that would mitigate his loss somehow or diminish my victory. Honestly, I would put my build up against his and feel totally confident I would have won anyway. Oh look, I did do just that - I entered on time and waited for the judges to pass judgement.

Let’s be honest, if Deus “worked on my entry too hard to remain objective”, then throw down, post on time. Don’t try and claim some kind of honour stops you from accepting a 10 minute pass because nobody deserves preferential treatment and then ask for preferential treatment to satisfy your own ego.

Deus, the only explanations I can think of for your failure to post are a.) You saw my post, realised it was better than yours and concocted a ‘10 minutes late’ story to avoid losing to me cleanly OR b.) You are inept and cannot even manage to tell the time. So which is it, afraid of honest failure or unable to perform a task my 6-year old child performs several times every day?

Ian, I agree with your comment on Deus’ choice of music – and I use that term very, very loosely. Perhaps if Deus hadn’t wasted time putting titles and an awful soundtrack on the video he might have actually posted on time.

I thank everyone for their opinions and contributions here, but would like to concentrate on my impending R4 matchup without further distractions. Sorry for the very long comment but once again, I find myself dragged into some juvenile drama not of my own making and feel I have to draw a line under it so here goes:

I won.

Yours,

The Delatron

Quoting Delatron 3000

You guys are making this contest way too much fun.

I was really looking forward to seeing this match and was a little bummed to see Deus miss the deadline (I would give him the benefit of the doubt here and attribute it to time management, and not to a cowardly retreat). I share Deus' curiosity about who would have won between the two. In many ways, it is an innocent request for him to ask the judges how they would have voted. I think all of us who have participated in these contests before (specifically the MOCAthalon) have noticed late players asking that their entry be judged, if only so they can get an objective rating on it. So don't fault Deus' curiosity in this matter.

However, do fault his disrespect for the judges. It is unprofessional, condescending, arrogant, snobbish, and presumptive for him to ask for special treatment after he just ignored the rules set in place for the contest. There is a deadline for a reason. Its not there to ignore.

It seems there are some high emotions running here fellas. I know Deus and drama go hand in hand these days, but lets remember that this is after all a LEGO contest, not the actual Olympics. If you lose a round, not a bid deal, life goes on. If you win a round, congrats, have fun next round!

Some humility and grace on both sides of the aisle would definitely do wonders in situations like these.

Man, this whole thing really got blown out of proportion... I lost and accepted that and I do not want it to be any other way.

Now that I am no longer in the MOColympics, rules do not apply to me and if judges want to tell who they would have voted for, there is nothing but themselves holding them back.

I figured I would throw my hat in the ring with a little more light hearted approach to the "situation"... Hope you enjoy this little Snoop Dogg (or Lion or whatever he is going by these days) parody :)

With so much drama in M-O-C
It’s kinda hard to focus on Bracket #3
But Deus and Del – somehow, some way
Keep coming up with funky builds like
Every single day
May I, kick a little something for the G’s?
And make a few comments as I breeze
Through the pages and the Olympics still jumping
Cause momma posted when David. ain’t home
I got LEGO in the living room getting stepped on
When I come down for work at 6 in the mornin’
So what you wanna do? Shee…
Judge or don’t judge I got knocked out in round 2
So turn off the lights and close the doors
But (but what) we don’t love them Duplos

Scrollin’ down the page, checkin’ comments, sippin’ on Juicy Juice
Laid back – with mind on my LEGO and my LEGO on my mind

Anyways, it amused me, Good luck to all moving into round 4!
