Honor Thy Father And Mother
Join to comment
I believe the 5th Commandment is being abused. Here is what I think:

I remember as a younger kid being taught to "Obey thy father and mother". However, it is Honor, not obey. "Honor"... think about what that means.

God does not want us to obey every single command our parents say. They are human, and humans are not going to be perfect.

However, we do need to love them, for obvious reasons.

It seems like the 5th is being bent so children obey, obey, and obey.

So, love your parents, respect them, but you definitely do not have to follow all their commands. They are not God!

by not obeying parents is not showing respect, also showing no respect to God
now, there are times when it is best not to do what they say(throw a rock at that kid)... know that i mean?

God placed our parents as the authority over us during our time hear on earth, so not showing respect to your parents is disrespecting God.

Part of Ephesians 6:1
"Children, obey your parents IN THE LORD, for this is right"

And no, you don't have to obey to respect. If you have a friend that is offering you drugs, you can not obey, but at the same time respect them.

Colossians 3:20 says obey your parents in ALL THINGS. I don't know... I mean, disobeying your parents when they demand you to hurt someone isn't a sin...

I think God expects us to use common sense in a situation like that.
