QUESTIONS 4: The Return of Michael Myers
Will the attack thread be open at exactly 12:00 or could it be 15 minutes early? 2 hours late? Some other variable?

Ok, lets keep it questions only. New players, feel free to ask anything, even if you think it has been covered. Your national survival may depend on it.

I know Michael posted an update in the Command Bulletin thread, but I'd like to throw in my advice as well. I will keep it a good deal shorter though, a checklist:

-Double check the map.
-Double check your attack post before you hit send.
-Make sure your orbat is accurate.
-Check your treaty groups for last minute shenanigans.

Good luck!

Great question General. Last Week I think I came in about 21 minuts early, which was regrettable, but unavoidable.

Tonight I will make an effort to get as close to midnight as possible (MOCpages Time), I don't have the same issues this week that prompted the early start on Turn2.

I'll start doing time-checks by bumping threads on the site about 10 minutes before I open the group, so that might be a clue for you.

My goal is Midnight-actual.

Thanks for the answer in strand #3. It helped.
But I still need a couple things clarified.

Moc#6 IS used in land attack offensive calculations?

Now, letís say my moc#2, moc#6, and moc#8 each has 5 smileys, moc#8 having FP and me having a 4 territory nation. Then, I see...

Smiley power = 0.5(5+5+5) added to
FP power = 3 added to
Offensive power = ???
Please fill in the last term as the wording in the Rules is not clear to me.

In the rules it says air defense is fighter planes and air offense is bombers. Are things like helicopters then not allowed for either?

Yes. #6 Bomber can be used in any land attack.

Also, if it wasn't mentioned before, we round up in favor of the players.

Using your example:

Power from MOCs (remember smiley power is divided by 2)

Tank - 3pts
Bomber - 3pts
Space - 6pts (3 smiley, 3 for correct FP shot)
Teritories - 8 (4 for the land 4 for space-power)

TOTAL OFFENSIVE POWER: 20

Hypothetical Defender:

Infantry - 4 pts
Fighter - 5 pts
Territorial Defence Power - 3pts (SAM diorama)
Territorial Defence Power - 4pts (trench system)
Territories - 3pts (no space power)
Defensive Alliance Power - 7pts

TOTAL DEFENSIVE POWER: 27

Result, Topsy loses...or...because she's smart, doesn't attack in the first place.

Hope that helps with the variable, I'm always here for more info. Good luck!

Greeting General Grant, no there are no rules governing helecopters as specific units in the game. The only way you could sneak a helecopter into a model would be in the Offensive sea category on an aircraft carrier, or perhaps as part of your Territorial Defense Power diorama. I hope that's clear, but don't hesitate to let me know if it isn't.

Just a thought, are the parameters for the 'Fighter Aircraft' category broad enough to allow a helicopter? It doesn't say it has to be a fixed-wing aircraft, although that's the most obvious interpretation.

Quite correct, I was focusing on the "number of engines" specification. If it was a single-engine chopper, that would be acceptable. Thanks for pointing out the loophole, I think I got too conditioned to everyone building fighters.

Now that was an informative exchange. Is there a final authority on the DA staff we should make any subsequent appeals to?

General Electric.

Any member of the DAS has the authority to answer questions regarding DA rules.

As stated on the informative home page, I reserve the right to offer final answers to any questions regarding exceptions to the rules.

Further, as the final arbiter of any rules questions, I do reserve the right to correct other DAS members, in regard to interpretation of DA rules.

But to interpret my role as an appellate judge, would be an error.

It would be an error because I will only invoke my authority at my own discretion, and not at the request of players.

It seems a minute distinction, but it matters. You see, it allows us to exploit the benefit of multiple staff members while avoiding the largely over rated value of an appeal system.

I hope this clarifies the dynamic.

the 2TA has been quite decisive during AW3.

Well done! I only hope the other TO leaders are taking notes.

I've been letting everone who scored the 3 bonus points know about it. I think I've only come across two or three who have done it correctly. I posted an example of what I'm looking for with the category but it may be buried in a locked thread. I'll have to dredge it up...

I'll try and guess a follow up question. Yes you can swap out an incorrect forced-perspective photo for a correct one. I'm willing to give FP shots a second look, but builders will have to contact me on Gen-Convo threads to get another look from the DA staff.

Hope that helps and good luck!

No, do not add any effects to the water or you risk a DQ. The reason for these seemingly draconian measures is to keep the focus entirely on the MOC in question and not about the background, water or fancy presentation. There are diorama categories that allow for greater creative freedom, but this isn't one of them. Good luck!

Fascinating stuff this game... I do have some more questions after this last round!

First of all on the use of Sea Power... Gen. Price attacked Gen. Revanchist from an adjacent land territory. Both territories were also coastal with adjacent sea zones. So in theory Price's battleship could've bombarded Revanchist's coastline, but was not counted in the reckoning. Does that mean Sea Power only applies to attacks on territories that do not also share a land border?

Question 2... did Gen. Marshall have an offensive land power MOC posted at the time of his attack on A25? He hasn't got any offense MOCs posted now. I thought I'd seen one by him though, so probably he's since deleted it. Just wondering.

Always a pleasure to hear from you General Lucas, let's have at it.

Question #1: The reason General Price was not able to make use of his powerful navy is because the movement rules do not allow a player to move even a single sea-zone until they control 3 coastal territories. The governing rule can be found in the "Attack Range" subsection of the Rules thread. The only exception to the rule is when a player's first territory is an island...or...Antarctica...hope that helps!

Queston #2: I think you just busted Gen. Marshall...this will require further investigation, thanks for pointing it out. When calculating battle results I typically go straight from the ORBAT, but I may have made a mistake.

He is certainly in violation now, and his attack will be voided. Now I'm going to go double-check the rest of the uncontested battles, excluding new-start players. Thanks again for your vigilance!

(EDIT) George Marshall's attack on A25 is voided for lack of Land Offensive MOC.

I have one more clarification regarding sea attack range - is it calculated as the number of sea zones through which the attack passes, or as the number of SZ boundaries crossed? In other words, is Gen. Price's attack on NA9 considered to pass through 2 Sea Zones (therefore requiring 6 coastal territories), or 1?

Thanks again for all your time and effort!

General Lucas.

Count the red lines crossed. Ergo, The answer to your question is... One. You have to control 3 territories in order to be able to cross 1 red line. Count the number of coastal territories you control, divide by THREE, and THAT is the number of red lines you can cross in order to attack (no, the last red line, right on the coast line does not count).

Hope that helps. You sound like a General who wants to make sure he understands the Admirals job.

Good. It is a sticky point in the rules that has caused more than a little grief already.

Plot your course!

Looking at the updated map, my territory, A25, still hasn't been fileed in with my color. Did I do something wrong with my attack again, or did the DA just miss me when filling out the map?

General Marshall.

I am afraid you botched your attack again.

Lets take a quick look at this excerpt form Mr. Goldmans AW3 review (found in the ATTACKS thread).

TEXT BEGINS:
General Marshall's attack on coastal territory A25 is ruled invalid by DA staff. The player is in violation of the Attack Rules, by not having a Land Offensive MOC entered on his ORBAT. It should be noted that General Marshall doesn't have any Land Offensive model at all at the time of this edited posting.
TEXT ENDS.

I just checked your ORBAT again... still no TANK. And when attacking, NO TANK = NO DICE.

I reccomend building and posting a TANK. Your partners in the GWC should have helped you to catch this error before it happened.

Your thoughts?

Not again... I was under the impression that you only needed a tank to attack other players territories, not unoccupied territories. Wow, usually I have the rules under control, I am all over the place this time! This is not good for me at all.

General Marshall.

The matter resides entirely within your control. Three easy steps:

1. Read.
2. Heed.
3. Lead.

Commanders who do these three things are out in front of the pack right now.

But be cool. Five months is a long time, and all glory is fleeting.

Stay in the fight, learn from your errors, and make sure you are exploiting your treaty organization to the utmost. Observe the behavior of TOs that are powerful, and copy those behaviors.

You and the GWC are down, but not out. Not by a long shot. Now get your head and the heads of your team mates back into this game.

Talk less, think more, make rational decisions and then ATTACK!

Morning gents...
Another question from the last attack window, this time about how MP is calculated. In Keith's report of Gen. Electric's attack on P16, it states:

Quoting Keith Goldman
Attacker: Eastern Pyrenees Command (General Electric)

Offensive Land Power: 9
Offensive Air Power: 12
Space Power: 9
Territorial Power: 2 (land 1, space 1)

TOTAL OFFENSIVE POWER: 32

The first 3 are just Smiley power, correct? So for Territorial power, should Gen. Electric have got another MP point for his bomber MOC? In the rules thread it says that bombers score '1 MP for each territory controlled' in addition to their smiley power.

Doesn't matter much when it's only 1 MP but later on, when people control a lot of territories, it could make a big difference... hope you don't mind my trying to clarify it before that happens!

Question about territory P15 please. How many Sea Zones doe it border, 2 or 3?

General Electric.

Excellent question.

Short answer = Two.

Unfortunately, they are two that don't have Sea Zone identifiers (the only two I think). So I will describe the operationally relevant facts in detail.

The first of the two sea zones to border P15 lies to the East of that territory. Its initial northern and southern limits correspond with the northernmost and southernmost points of Territory P15. This sea zone also contains Coastal Island Territory P18 (New Zealand).

The second Sea Zone lies to the West. Its initial Northern limit corresponds with the northernmost point of Territory P14. Its southern limit corresponds with the southernmost limit of territory P15.

Of specific importance: SZ75 DOES NOT touch territory P15 at any point. SZ75 touches only Territory AA and Territory P17.

This question is only necessary because of errors that remain on the map, and I thank you for paying attention, and bringing the defects to the attention of the DAS.

When you plot progress carefully, you are much more likely to achieve it!

1 MP for each territory controlled' in addition to their smiley power.

General Lucas.

You are correct. The equation would read something like: 1MP per territory + (#of yellow heads on BOMBER MOC, divided by 2)

Your Adjusted Military Power should include several factors. They are all relevant, but none are meant to "Define" your AMP by themselves.

For example:

Total size of your country
(bigger = stronger).

MOC quality and or effective diplomacy
(more yellow heads = stronger).

Range to target
(Less = stronger).

Number of Decisive Actions, either attack or defense in one turn
(Fewer actions = stronger).

All of these factors should be manifest in your AMP. And each of these factors can affect a commanders plans differently.

But you are right to call the question. Good spot.

Measure three times, and cut once!

Do I have that right, and do you anticipate any more building opportunities or have I exhausted everything?

General Electric.

Yes you are correct.

No, there will be no new categories added in this iteration of DA.

DA2.0 may include digital build options, VTOL air craft, Air Transports, and a "Free Build" category.

But for now, the dice are rolling and there will be no changes on the fly.

You are the first builder to enter the next phase of the game. Your building efforts now will be restricted to upgrades and improvements.

How would you gage your own level of interest, now that the "white hot build-a-thon" phase is drawing to a close?

I ask because pacing the action was a challenge for me in designing this group, and I resigned myself to the notion that there would have to be "Phases" or plateaus in the action.

So, as the group activity slows down for the long haul to 31 OCT, what do you predict in terms of player interaction.

I anticipate a large drop off in activity, but... I really don't know.

Your thoughts?

Thought I would interject my thoughts here too, even tho this was directed at GE. I too see your scenerios happening. I also think that once people build all their mocs, there may even be a lull in building upgrades until some players begin to drop out or loose their territories. I really don't see the people left giving each other smiles on their upgrades unless they are allied in some way. It is already happening. But as people leave the game for whatever reasons, they may still watch and perhaps even have favorite generals who they will smiley support... that's when upgrade building will begin.

General Gwain, I think the issue has been settled by General Rountree, who has agreed to direct his smack-talk elsewhere. Hopefully your experience has not soured you from playing, I myself never thought General Rountree crossed the line, I thought it was pretty clear he was joking.

Your results may vary, and your voice has been heard. I would advise against engaging any further smack-talk yourself, however, you wouldn't want to create the idea that you can dish it out but not take it. Good luck General!

Yes, I will check your Space Power MOC for FP bonus points, stand by for that.

I'm going to say no, you can't land-bridge the gap betwen EA 17 and EA 10, although I'm leaving it open for Michael to over-rule me. Check back later for the final verdict.

Both Michael's Icon and my own are characters from the greatest film of all time: Escape from New York. Michael's is the President (played by the late Donald Pleasance) and mine is the prison warden (played by the late Lee Van Cleef).

General Criatori.

Historically important yes.
Land Bridge nope.

The Suez and Panama canals are artificial. They are narrow bodies of water that would clog and eventually fill in without constant repair work.

But the Bosporus and Dardanelles are naturally occurring features which in time will only erode into larger and larger gaps.

man made = passable.
natural = boat.

General Marshall, no... waitÖGeorge,

Read these words very carefully now, this is important:

Escape From New York is as Keith pointed out... the BEST FILM EVER MADE!

IF you haven't seen it, and IF you want to be a GOOD AMERICAN (or a good citizen of ANY NATO COUNTRY, or former WARSAW PACT COUNTRY except Russia) then go out into the world and FIND this film.

Sit alone, perhaps with a glass of your favorite beverage (Yes George... take the time to drink it from a glass) and watch this film.

It is IMPORTANT. More important than anything else at this point in your life! It's about being a man! It's about Snake Pliskin! Itís about saving the free world! Itís about building a team, getting the mission done, and then its about stickín it to the man!

It's about so many important things... but mostly George... it's about you man. It's about you.

Greatest film ever made.

Watch it, learn it, live it.

We will talk about this again AFTER you see it.

It's funny, actually, because I saw this movie on iTunes once and thought "Wow, this looks like a really good movie, I really need to watch it sometime". I didn't realize it was the same movie you guys were talking about until I just looked it up! Now, if you will excuse me, I will be sitting down, drinking my favorite beverage (from a glass), and watching the "greatest movie of all time!"

If you guys don't hear from me in a while, do not fear. I have NOT been kidnapped or killed, I have just been enjoying a movie suggested to me by Mr. Rutherford and Mr. Goldman.

It's true...Snake is awesome. But Donald Pleasance has been in... A BILLION movies and he always got to play the coolest guys (his role as Blowfeld inspired Dr. Evil). Pleasance is also awesome. Dr. Loomis from Halloween? The priest from Pirnce of Darkness? And who could forget his ground breaking work as the villan in the film classic "Puma Man!"

Just think about that. He played the villian in a film called "Puma Man!" How many actors can say that?

ONE. Thats how many!

Pleasance, VanCleef and Borgnine totally carried Kurt Russle in Escape From New York. No doubt about that.
