LOM Conversation 15
It took too long to scroll to the bottom of the last one. Anyway, the LOM fun fact for this convo (not one of my MOLs) is that the Outlaws and Rainosians were greater enemies for a while than either were with the Mythronians. During their squabbles, the Rainosians made a truce with Mythron to hunt bandits, and the Outlaws stole a chest of precious diamonds from Rainos (as well as quite a few fakes). Now, back to plotting the theft of Brick's Lego collection!

MOL Fun Fact - The capital of Mythron is named for a real-world Norman (for anyone who didn't know, Normans were the last race to conquer England and were also well-known as adventurers, taking territories all over the known world). Check out his biography here:

I think you should put another plate or two next to the 4x6, and then stack some small brown plates, going at a very mild slope. Do not have the little hill on the edge of the cliff. Also, if you have any brown vines, you could use those by the edge. Also, if that is as big as youy are going to get, I recomenned not using any foliage pecies at the top.

First take out the dark red plate :P
Looks good, but maybe change the brown to dark tan and gradually transition into green; add a few dark grey 1x1 rounds as pebbles.

Or you could do the Halhi method: put a bunch of dark tan, tan, light grey, and dark grey 1x2 plates and 2x2 corner plates in a pile, mix them around, and put them together randomly.

I pretend to know about landscaping. I would suggest that you keep in the tan and brown palette for the top of the bank, maybe some dark tan, and don't add foliage. The slanting at the edge is very good, and I think you oughtn't to cover it up with grass.

Rockwork is made to look natural, stonework is made to look artificial. At least, that's how it works in Lego building, I think.

Ah. it's not really very clear though, considering that stones can be something other than walls.

Oh, hey I'm in spanish II and just learned past tense too. We're about even. I don't use a textbook, though.

Our Spanish teacher is using a program where she makes a gesture that means a word, and we say the word. So when she gives us directions, we say what she wants us to do, she just makes the signs. It is more like how you learn your very first language when you are young. We also have an "absolutely no English whatsoever in Spanish class" rule, so it is sometimes hard to communicate, but it is effective: When the students whisper in class, they whisper in Spanish.

I'm only year one though, and we only started this method halfway through the year, so we essentially started over, and are now probably behind...

It is certainly exhausting, mostly because you do the signs, too, and have to pay attention constantly or get lost in what the class is doing, but it goes so much faster than how you usually learn languages in class. And you don't write that much, although spelling is taught by reading texts of songs, raps, and short plays.

What doesn't make sense for me is that, if "pensar" is for opinions, why it doesn't require the subjunctive form. I can understand the uncertainty principle and the rules of quantum physics, but this bit of grammar escapes my comprehension.

My Spanish training was hamstrung by a switch in instructors from an experienced PhD certified to teach both English and Spanish to a young, fresh-from-college Spanish teacher with a strong Korean accent whose English is only twice as good as my Spanish.

In the other news, the sequel to the hit Lego Movie is set to hit theaters in May 2017, and, more importantly, TLG is looking for a non-petroleum-based substitute (i.e., a bioplastic) to replace ABS by 2030! In fifteen years, I can finally start to stock up on green bricks!

Well, about time.... For both of those. :P I knew both would happen soon, but confirmation is always a... confirming thing. :P

Although the other admins can correct me on this, the definition of a LOM freebuild is having your LOM character in a scene you built. This scene can be simple, maybe just a few rocks or prebuilt trees, but it has to be there for it to count as a freebuild. Any posted mocs which do not fulfill this criteria will be removed from the group, even if there is a picture of your character alone elsewhere in the moc.

Second, unlike the majority of groups on MOCpages, The Lands of Mythron is an active roleplaying game. This means that, to keep the game functioning smoothly, we need to keep convos organized in the appropriate threads. This means that, if you want to discuss font tricks, sorting systems, computers, Daleks, the Roaring 20s, or anything else, you do it in the most recent General Conversation thread. The Questions thread is for specific, LOM-related questions only. When random conversations get put in the Questions thread, it makes it slower to load and harder to find and answer necessary questions.

If you see somebody posting unrelated things in a specific thread, please, either ignore them, or reply to their comment in a different thread. This is done by A) pressing the reply button on their comment, B) copying the html code there, and C) going to the correct thread and adding a comment there with their comment and your reply underneath. I understand this takes three more clicks than replying in the same thread, but this will help keep the staff keep the group tidy if you can do this. Thanks, everyone.

I can elaborate on the definition of acceptable MOCs.

- An LOM build must be set in the Lands of Mythron with a reason for why it fits. It may or may not have the poster's LOM character. This means that, unless you do extra work to adapt it, you can't post your latest castle project or MELO entry to the LOM and expect us not to remove it - this is not a display group.
Pass: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/374499
Hypothetical Fail: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/355352

- As for out-of-genre content, time travel is not a technology in this universe, nor is there any interaction with space aliens (you could hide a TARDIS or something like that in a normal LOM MOC as a joke, though). You can also add MOCs that add to the history of the LOM as long as you don't do too many of them.
Pass: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/381357
Hypothetical Fail: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/374787

- There is an area in-between being deleted and getting points. If an LOM member adds what amounts to a "fig-on-a-plate" or a scene that was blatantly built for the sake of earning cheap points, it might not be removed from the group but it would not count as a freebuild or challenge entry on the scoreboard.

We have just as much freedom as any other faction has, except we handle our freedom in an honorable and mature way, unlike others that do harm to people just because they are of another faction.

Freedom without a standard to handle that freedom will only lead to things that are not functional. Aka, factions like Rainos where each person defines his own morals, rules, and regulations, being bound together only by mutual hate for Mythron.

Does a Nerogue have the freedom to abandon his or her uniform, ignore injustices, challenge the central way of thinking that defines her or his faction, sacrifice her or his reputation in the name of pleasure, blacken the name of Nerogue and Mythron, or act in the name of personal profit when there is a chance of harming others? If a Nerogue may do all of these and still be recognized as a Nerogue, then I will believe that you have the same freedoms as another faction.

Despite what most people think, the Outlaws are not in fact unorganized, and relatively functional for their member's standards. Not all Outlaws even do harm just for fun. My character used to, but he changed a lot. Similarly, characters like those of Kai Bernstein, OoL and Shawn Gibson are good examples of Outlaws that don't harm others just because of their faction.
Also, you have to admit, sometimes you just feel like being a bad guy in roleplays like this. It helps you get your bad side out so you don't show it as much in real life. And it's cool. Come join the dark side, we have cookies. :P

Glad I chose not to join them, I was considering that for a while. (actually I made the decision in like 5 minutes... But they were my second choice :P)

You are turning on your hypothetical allies... I don't mind, I just want to remind you that you have the stereotype of the orderly rule-follower to uphold. :P

Does a Nerogue have the freedom to abandon his or her uniform,

Yes. Well, at least they can ignore it and the war, I believe.
Quoting Gilbert Despathens ignore injustices,

Ignore that which is morally good - yeah, what a great thing to do.
Quoting Gilbert Despathens challenge the central way of thinking that defines her or his faction,

Can that be said about Rainosians? If a Rainosian starts talking about how Mythronian ways of thinking are so great, I doubt he'd be well-liked.
Quoting Gilbert Despathens sacrifice her or his reputation in the name of pleasure,
Ignoring moral values - what a positive attribute of Rainosians.
Quoting Gilbert Despathens blacken the name of Nerogue and Mythron,

Like above - can that be said about Rainos either? If you're going to do that, looks like you might as well join a faction you like better.
Quoting Gilbert Despathens or act in the name of personal profit when there is a chance of harming others?

Selfishness and lack of moral good - definitely a good set of qualities to have.
Quoting Gilbert Despathens If a Nerogue may do all of these and still be recognized as a Nerogue, then I will believe that you have the same freedoms as another faction.

Or they have the freedom to do what is right along with the rest of their faction, not what is wrong, which is a privilege that Rainosians lack.

Or they have the freedom to do what is right along with the rest of their faction, not what is wrong, which is a privilege that Rainosians lack.

There are some practical reasons how states with less order can be superior, for example taxes, and not being taken from your family to fight in the war if you really don't want to. Forced patriotism never works that well.

So Mythronians have the freedom to do what they think is right. But that doesn't do much good when you are talking to people who think (or should I say, know) that what you think is right, is wrong? Maybe ending the life of that outlaw who was stealing stuff from a farmer's house while threatening the family with a knife resulted in the Outlaw's family not having anything to eat, and starving? The farmer has his fields. The Outlaw might have nothing. Maybe he was trying to survive, not do other people harm. And now the concept of right and wrong is pretty warped, isn't it? So is freedom to do something like that really a good thing?

(forgive me if I am getting a bit carried away here, that usually happens when I am tired.)

I think that is a good thing. It shows that you are subconsciously aware of the things you failed to think through when choosing your faction, and, without even knowing it, trying to make up for that.

Nope, it shows that one has a pretty complicated story and the other was dissatisfied with his outlaw life. They'll both become Mythronians soon, anyway.

If the Outlaw has nothing and is unwilling to find his food in a way that's morally correct (plant crops himself, hunt, join society, etc.) then he's definitely the one in the wrong.

And since when are we forced to fight in the war? None of my characters have even thought about fighting in the war yet...

That is because they are wandering around from place to place, which makes it hard to draft someone. :P And if the Outlaw was previously shut out of society for whatever reasons, I don't think they'll let him back in. And there are more reasons for being expelled from a community than doing something bad, for example being bitten by a Vampire or Werewolf, or being thrown out by someone who simply didn't like them.

The thing about sea turtles is, they make good, nay, excellent stew. Young sea turtles are often raised from an egg for this purpose, training for a hundred years under a master stew-chef. On the hundredth year after their hatching, the members of this select few are sent on a quest to retrieve the rare ingredients of the Elder Stew. If they are successful, they prepare the recipe under the eyes of the Council of Elders, and the resulting stew is offered to the turtle god, the Great A'tuin. Usually, the Great A'Tuin ignores the offer, and, when this happens, all of turtledom gathers in a celebration of stew-tasting. From that point forward, the student is regarded as a Master of Stew.

Now, who knows how to make a turtle stew?

I would like to make a few announcements and requests.

The first is that my brother shall be joining us soon, as a Nerougeian. He is autistic, so if he says something strange please don't get angry over it.

The second is that I would like to have the Rainosian Troytanion clan to be relocated to Guaire and placed in the charge of Toa Infernum.

Ah, the perils of taking a comment out of context. Before I respond, keep in mind, it wasn't supposed to be an analysis of your building skills (and I'm not exaggerating when I say you're my favorite builder in this group; if it was supposed to be a full analysis the good would be much extended..) it was just an analysis of weaknesses:

Quoting Gilbert Despathens
Could you please give me some more detail on a few lines of the review you wrote for your blue-coat buddies? I've selected a few lines that I don't quite follow: "His coloring is also not the greatest - mixes of red and dark red aren't pleasing." I might be partially color-blind, but I don't remember that mix. Which MOC was that?
>
I believe it was on your UCA on the middle building. I could be wrong (I'll check in a moment) but IIRC the SNOTted tile section was normal red...? (along those lines...you were correct in my inspiration for my TT R5 entry: I probably based a lot of the techniques/styles too closely off that.)
Quoting Gilbert Despathens "The first [wall design I commonly use] is a blocky SNOTted tiles design that lacks texture and wastes pieces, the other is an inefficient mix of masonry bricks (often with the backside out - not good) and SNOTted tiled that lacks any consistency." If you would be so kind as to clarify that the first of these refers to the walls on my Tavern, I would be very grateful. If so, I'll give you a hint - it's actually a very parts-efficient technique for poor, broke builders like me who can't build an entire building with greebly studs-up structures with the added advantage that people like new techniques better than the innumerable attempts to copy Luke Watkins.

Interesting...I suppose it's just not especially viable for someone like me who's never used Bricklink and doesn't have a whole bunch of tiles to spare. My opinion was that it looked like it had some promise, but it could use some refinement (and I see in your Fairytale Rescue that you greatly improved the technique)
Quoting Gilbert Despathens
"However, I would humbly say that my AC entry is approaching the level of his Black Knight Tavern (feel free to disagree once it's posted) and I built it in 2-3 days rather than that many months." "Note: he has noted that my buildings are approaching or passing his level of work." Brave words, Halhi - let's see who comes out on top come May. Good luck, because I'm not an old dog yet.

Haha...yeah. I'd say that I'm starting to improve rapidly again, at least in terms of buildings, since I was never good at those in the past (like in my UC Tensions Rising entry...). That first bit may have been a slight exaggeration (and...once again, flooring is giving me trouble, so I'm not sure how it will turn out) but it's definitely more complex than the black knight tavern. Yours is probably a superior overall design though...not to mention that mine might bear a bit too much of a resemblance to yours, however much I'm trying to avoid it...

I'm not saying anything until the attack's over. Well... I didn't say that experimenting is a weakness; I see it as more of a strength, and I try to change my techniques all the time.

Any changes of opinion for the sake of fairness, now that you've seen mine about you folks? I suppose I can guess some of the stuff (bad buildings since I've only recently gotten good at them, boring grounds (dark tan ground syndrome), MOCs overally reliant on rockwork,...)

Oh! That explains it - Infernum, Adam and I were wondering whether you were being really pessimistic about our skills. Strategically speaking, it would have been more useful to you to list our strengths, because we get to choose the ground of attack in the opening MOC-off and you would want to counter whatever we choose. I'll continue to exchange criticism with you as normal, but your faction will have to send spies if it wants the full briefing (which, unfortunately, I may have recently lost...).

I suppose my advantage is that the MOC-off can't be a city scene...
That's an interesting thing to think about though. (along with me and Brick's thoughts about whether to recruite someone like KW Vauban to help us)
And maybe if I bug Ian about it enough he'll throw together something for that Rank Challenge.

Lolwat? He demotes everyone? I don't know if that's funny or troll-like...

Um...well, not quite. There's been twice that he's demoted people. First time, I decided as a joke (since we were talking about something like it) to change the name of the group to "The Halhi 141 fan club"; I might have also demoted everyone for a few minutes, then I repromoted them. George missed the humor and demoted me.
Later...well, this one is a pretty long story filled with a lot of arguing, but here's the gist of it: Me and Kai had an argument with Reynolds. Reynolds was in the Gnomes group for no reason other than to advertise his creations. For both reasons (mainly the first) I asked Infernum to remove Rey, and he did. He also repromoted me after I told him what happened earlier. George got all mad again and demoted both of us.

Eventually Freeling returned and made us admins again though, so it's all fine now

the added advantage that people like new techniques better than the innumerable attempts to copy Luke Watkins.

That's really interesting, that's something I'm going to try to avoid in the future. It seems like most of my builds' styling is basically based on other people (with the exception of my rock technique): My stonework is Luke's, my architecture is yours, my foliage is generic, my trees (with the exception of the hexagonal technique that Kai came up with) are Justin M's... I'm planning on trying to use non-Lego inspiration photos in the future to avoid copying techniques (and get my techniques to be more lifelike)
That being said, I think I like Luke's technique best since it's more realistic than any other I've seen.

Hey Gilbert, would you mind giving me a detailed run down on everything I did wrong in my most recent build? I'm pretty impressed by it, but I think I can do better.

Gladly, but remember that you asked for it.

My first impression was, "Aahg... the front of that building is so flat." You need something to break up all that tan, my friend. Windows are nice for that, and so are more-even arrangements of dark and light tan. It would also have helped if you had added more to the stone foundation, like a few plates with studs on them for extra texture. The curve on the front steps leading up the hill was also lost on me at first - if you wanted to make them irregular without visibly wrapping them around an object, you could have continued the zig-zag pattern you used on top all the way down. I liked the angle you set the house at, though. With a few more details around the edge to cover the awkward alignment, especially in the corner between the stairs and the foundation, it would have been excellent. The hill was also a high point of the MOC in more ways than the literal one, but that brings me into the composition details.

Sometimes the arrangement of parts in a MOC can be nearly as important as the building techniques used to make the parts. In this case, you put all of the high structures - the house, hill and the tree - on one edge of the scene, and the rest was fairly flat. If you had moved the tree behind the pigpen and moved the pigpen closer to the path, that would have greatly modified the effect of the scene. For starters, with a tree on the right and a house on the left, it wouldn't look like half of the MOC was an afterthought that was never properly filled up. Also, it would have eliminated the sea of long grass between the pen and the path - Mr. Chest surely would have worn it down on his daily slop delivery. Finally, the tree's new location would have given everyone a better view of the side of the house and the lean-to there. These changes wouldn't have given you fives, but they might have earned another four, especially if you cleared out some of the long grass to show frequently-trodden areas.

I'm getting tired of rockwork anyway - all the better. As long as it isn't a foliage or water filled scene (although water isn't too bad anymore...and I have wanted to try out a working wave technique for a while, I won't have too much trouble (and I think you have troubles with piece count in those areas as well too...)

Oh, I didn't realize that I had such a fearsome reputation. Compared to Halhi, I thought myself sympathetic. I very much doubt that you can make something that will have nothing for me to pick at - I can find parts that could be improved on even the best builders' work.
