October UC: Aftermath
In a frenzied, several-hour session that spanned from the evening of September 30 to the afternoon of October 1, the admins have reached a verdict on each of the battles of the "Mythron Attacks!" challenge. Believe us, each side was close enough to drive us to distraction, and two of the victories may have been overturned or cemented by one more MOC on the losing side. Thanks to everyone for making this our largest challenge yet - 22 players participated - and congratulations to Toa Infernum and David the Fire Ninja Jedi for taking first and second place.

Land Battle: Outlaws versus Nerogue - Outlaws win!

Land Battle: Rainos versus Mythron - Rainos wins!

Land Battle: Rainos versus Mythron with Outlaws on either side - Rainos wins!

Sea Battle: Nerogue versus Enalica - Nerogue wins 1 to 0 and goes on to compete in the next battle!

Sea Battle: Nerogue and Mythron versus Rainos - Unclear - Rainos, maybe?

Challenge Description:

Caught by two surprisingly powerful Rainosian fleets and presented with an adamantine barrier of barbarians and outlaws on land, the invading Mythronian and Nerogue forces sustained huge casualties and missed their landing point on the northeastern coast. Entire troop ships have been converted to prison hulks and escorted by Rainosian captains to Worsan, where their cargoes of men and arms are to be sold or ransomed.
However, the invasion was not a total defeat - the sailors gave almost as good as they got and established a supply route running due west from the delta of the Falmor river to the mountains of eastern Rainos, where several troops have made an uncomfortable but unassailable beachhead. The Rainosian fleets are parted once again, with one lingering near Worsan and the other protecting the vulnerable northeastern coast from a second attack.
The battle at home was not nearly as even. Nerogue proved incapable of resisting the Outlaw incursions, and much of Mythron (except for the major cities) is in chaos. Even worse, a new and secretive organization from Bodus known as the Black Lotus has emerged as a spearhead of the rebellion. As the nights grow longer and the light grows dim, will the once-glorious Empire of Mythron recover from this martial winter?

Breakdown:

Enalica:

Your faction finally has a chance to rank among its fellows, but there are two catches: First, you must recruit new members from any source - even other factions, if you can win them; and second, all sorts of suspicious characters are tracking mud all over your city!
Find more players, contribute to the renovation of your faction or build a MOC showing what you're going to do about the Mythronian/Nerogue/Outlaw/or even Rainosian "tourist" problem.

Outlaws:

You have won a victory in Mythron, but there is still plenty to do - a secretive order known as the Black Lotus has arisen in Bodus. The true members of this elite clan of killers are unknown, but they have an open outer circle. Your orders, should you choose to accept membership into this enticing organization, are to meet in or near Worsan and await further instruction. Otherwise, fight to protect your newfound riches against the Mythronian retaliation.

Rainos:

The failed invasion has prompted concern across Rainos, but more importantly it opened a huge market in secondhand weaponry in Worsan. Head south to this stunning tropical city to build your armory through trade, or wipe the remaining Mythronian stragglers off of your shores with the power of the guerrilla!

Mythron:

Your nation is dividing its forces in two to defend its territory in Rainos and beat back the Outlaws at the same time. However, given the rate of desertion among the recently inducted, you need more troops... If only you could free your brethren in Worsan... Then again, a good general can fight any odds; why not end the Outlaw reign of terror on your own, Blue Tulip or not? Either go in disguise to the capital of Enalica or duke it out with those good-for-nothing bandits.

Nerogue:

You no longer have Mythron's trust. Many of your troops, regarded as undisciplined militia by the traditional army, have been "invited" to serve with (read: under) Mythronian companies in Rainos while the "real" army handles the Outlaws. Either offer your services to the throne and join the ranks, or try to save a bit of face by investigating the Black Lotus and its movements in Worsan.

Worsan details:

The capital of Enalica is a warm (in climate if not in spirit) and sprawling, more reminiscent of a town on the Mediterranean (Rome, even) than a dingy pirate port until you look beneath the shiny skin. Leave the grim, grey stone in Mythron (if possible) and build with some brighter colors and fantastic, towering architecture - at least in the main streets. The side streets are dark, narrow, and winding. Also, this place is teeming with all sorts of unfriendly individuals, especially the locals - visitors should adopt techniques to REMAIN DISCREET, whether that means going in disguise or free-running over the roofs and alleyways to avoid unfriendly eyes.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Challenge details:

Enalicans can earn the points for this challenge by recruiting members to their faction (or even switching to the faction from another), but to be eligible for winning, all players must build a MOC. This challenge will last as long as the month and, unlike the September UC, there will be no direct competition between factions to determine the events of the next challenge. Entries will be judged by the admins in November based on the following aspects:

6 points for the build. This includes color schemes, accuracy to the location (whether it is set in Worsan or elsewhere in the Lands of Mythron), fancy techniques and general appearance.

3 points for photography, plot and relationship to the challenge. Points will be detracted this time for not providing or explaining a connection to one's faction's role in this challenge.

1 "Free" point for whatever the judges want.

Good luck, everyone! If we get thirty entries or more, we can have awards for first, second AND third place!

Nerogue! To the Faction group!

If anyone has any questions or thoughts about the Black Lotus, discuss it in the following thread:
http://www.mocpages.com/group_conversation.php?id=22392&topicid=92022

Also, anything written about the Black Lotus in your MOCs MUST have a sense of uncertainty as to whether or not the things about the Black Lotus you present are true.

No one is allowed to say that they joined the Black Lotus.

By allowing Nerogueians to face the Rainosians by serving under your commanders and having them trained by you? Not going to happen. We are setting up our own style of warfare and training, till then...
We will continue our alliance by investigating this Black Lotus as it seems to be directed against Mythron.

You do stop invading fleets, but you also attract angry bands of man-eating orcs.

Ah, but you do not see the long term advantages! Those orcs have to eat, do they not? So when they get hungry what will they eat? They'll steal farmer's sheep! Those farmers will then become outraged, and this is when the council will step in, telling them that it's Mythron that sent the orcs. The farmers, and other citizens, will then be united by a common enemy, strengthening Rainos as a whole!

The Outlaw challenge would be best, I think, unless you want to cross all the way over for some reason. I'm beginning to feel sorry for your character - he keeps running farther away from the wizard he's looking for! At least the outlaw challenge lets you stay in Mythron.

Your faction finally has a chance to rank among its fellows, but there are two catches: First, you must recruit new members from any source - even other factions, if you can win them; and second, foreigners in cloaks are tracking mud all over your city! Find more players, contribute to the renovation of your faction or build a MOC showing what you're going to do with the "tourist" problem...

...Enalicans can earn the points for this challenge by recruiting members to their faction (or even switching to the faction from another), but to be eligible for winning, all players must build a MOC.

This challenge is unique because you can actually perform a MOC-free function by recruiting more members to your faction and/or build a MOC set in Worsan that will be judged alongside the entries from every other player for a chance to win first, second, or even third place if we have enough entries.

This? It's due upon the final instant of All Hallows' Eve, as the wards emplaced on the safety of the world by the evening's Halloween traditions begin to fade and the darkness gathers as midnight approaches, only to be snuffed away by the start of day on November 1st...
In other words, we have all month. Welcome to MOCpages and the Lands of Mythron! Feel free to join the noble faction of Rainos when the time comes for your character intro - we'll give you cake served on a shield looted from one of those would-be Mythronian invaders.

No, I meant one of those who tried to attack at the intended landing zone and were horribly slaughtered, or one of the thousands of miserable captives sitting in Worsan, waiting to be ransomed, sold into slavery, rescued or killed; not the handful of stragglers camping in those dismal mountains that nobody wanted anyway.

It says

"Points will be detracted this time for not providing or explaining a connection to one's faction's role"

It is not saying connections to other factions. Just follow your faction's description and you'll be fine. It doesn't say things about connecting to other factions' roles - It says one's faction's role.

Yes, I do mean four or five stories per building. Fortunately, size is not an official determining factor in the judges' scoring system. I'm going for a street of Roman-style tenements.

Ha! I've still got you beat on time. Plus, I've had to wedge everything in around a crazy schedule including rehearsals for a musical, a trip to Saint Louis, and a massive accumulation of real-world deadlines. I also had a story from the beginning, but then someone decided to go to Drfdor instead of Worsan... Fortunately, I think I have a better revision. Sir Kindle is not required! Don't get excited. I'm going to post my entry if I have to stay up to 11:59:59 to do it! To answer your question, the deadline is not set to a specific time zone, so as long as the builder posts it BEFORE November first in his or her time zone, the entry is good.

Prizes are points. The lowest prize awarded is worth five extra points, the next-to-lowest is worth ten, and the third-to-lowest is worth fifteen. We give out one prize if there are one to nineteen entries, two prizes if there are twenty to twenty-nine entries and three prizes if we ever pass thirty. Also, not everyone who entered put a link in this thread or even added "UCA" or an equivalent label to their entry's titles, so we have some digging to do to make sure we judge all the entries.

Alright everyone, no more entries will be accepted. You can post them as freebuilds, but you can't title it October UC or anything like it. We will begin judging as soon as the judges have time.

There were 21 entries, so we can't award for 1st, 2nd, and third place. But there will at least be a 1st place reward, maybe a 2nd as well.

Elementary, my dear Brunsting. Incidentally, Mr. Holmes never said that anything was elementary, at least not in the original stories... but, as an active reader (a deduction I make from your icon's intellectual appearance and the storybook plot line of your LOM MOCs) you might know that already.

They aren't violent books for the most part, but they are definitely fast-paced and engrossing. You do have to get used to the late-Victorian setting, though.

Late-Victorian refers to the last part of the 1800s when Queen Victoria was on the throne. Sherlock came out during that era, although he did resurface as a pre-WWI counter-intelligence operative around 1920 in the last story written by the original author. Victorian-themed fiction and sci-fi inspired the popular Steampunk genre - have you heard of that one?

Ah, that's it.

Gee, thanks.

Sorry, that may have been hypocritical of me. I've only known about it for two years or so.

I find steampunk to be fun to build in; the only problem is that I'm quite bad at it :P

Steampunk is a genre of fiction/graphic novels in which internal combustion was never discovered. Fashions are usually Victorian (corsets and top hats) with goggles or other equipment. Airships are most commonly associated with steampunk, but walkers or steamships are also common. Here's the best Lego steampunk I've seen: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dutchlegos/10558781904/

Yet I count six distinct units of language, or seven if the contraction is expanded to its source elements. On the whole, I find his alleged rebuttal quite hypocritical, and my opinion is thus: prolixity is the most fun by far.

True, true, for when the use of self-sufficiently meaningful elements is combined with the optimal utilization of a satisfactorily sesquipedalian vocablulary, who can dare to eschew obfuscation in favor of perspicuous phraseology?

Three or so of those words stumped me, metaphorically speaking. And I read the Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R Martin!

Most of those words stumped me, and hurt my brain. :(

Everyone, it is now time to stop taking 20 minutes to google things and write up your posts. Actually, most of you probably didn't. Either way, enough of these shenanigans.
