We had this same thing in the MocAthalon right? And we counted you guys as two players... This one may be a bit trickier but we'll work something out where you can both play.

Have you guys ever thought of getting seperate accounts? Maybe just have one of you set one up JUST for contests or something?

If you win a prize and choose not to accept it, then it will be donated to a charity of my choosing. (no, it won't be the "Chris Phipson Lego Fund.") I'll most likely donate it to a hospital in the area or something.

So short answer is yes, you are more than welcome to play, try to win, and then have your prize IF you win one be donated to charity.

Yes, we have talked about him getting a separate account. But he doesn't really want to "run" his own account. Not sure why though. An account just for contests? I'll have to ask him about that. Thanks, Chris.

That would depend on the number of participants for Round 1. The reason it was held last year was the fact that we were able to field a second group of 64. We'll just have to wait and see...~H

Short answer, yes. Each round of play is ten days but there are a few days in between to let the judges do what we need to do to get the next round ready. So bank on two weeks total per round.

While we would love to have you, here's my thought on it. Let's say that you are one of the top 64 (128) players in round one and take a slot for round 2. Then something pops up and you aren't able to continue in the games? Then there's one person who could have had a spot that was going to continue but can't because you took that spot with no intention of continuing.

If you'er TRULY too busy then I say let someone else take the spot, just in case. However, if you think that you can swing it (and this is a question that ONLY you can answer) and you would be able to stay in as long as you can then by all means, it'd be great to have you compete. The choice is really up to you.

Any word on if one of you is going to create an account for this contest? We talked about it between the judges and WILL allow you to compete with one account but it's going to be tricky keeping track of who's doing what that way... possible mind you, but tricky.

What was the decision on your guy's end? Two accounts (easier for the judges) or one?

Sorry about not getting back to you sooner, Chris. We were on vacation this week and have only just gotten back.

Also, how should we sign up? Do we make two separate comments and specify who posted which comment? Or would one comment be enough?

The first round will be a free for all round and your moc will be scored on a point system.

If you make it to round two then you will be paired with an opponent.

There are no teams, this is a one on one contest.

The contest usually runs into the start of December.

Just make two signups in the sign up thread, one for Jr., one for Sr.

On your entries, just be sure that the judges can tell that it's Jr. Or Sr. in the title... maybe type out the words Junior and Senior, that'll help us keep easier track at a glance.

Yes. TFOLs are from age 13 to 17. 12 and under are YFOLs and 18 and up are AFOLs. In either case, 12 or 13, you're still eligable for the "young moccer" prize (which is for builders 14 and under).

Each judge will be giving the moc a score between 1 and 10 with a possible perfect score of 60. The judges will not be posting each of their scores on your mocs (we'll be adding everything up in private). After the round you will be getting a single comment from one of the judges with your final, fully tallied score.

So for Round 1, can you do a music video showing a guy doing all these things that relate to the lyrics of the song?

If you wish, yes. Just remember, the judges HAVE to be able to judge your creation on mocpages. A link to a youtube video may be a cool addition, but if that's the only way to see your build then well...

Remember, this is a building contest. That's why we don't want a lot of photoshop and stuff like that. If you do a video, you'll be expecting the judges to judge the video, not the moc as a stand alone piece, which is what we WILL be judging.

Again, adding the video is a really cool idea, but don't expect it to get you even one single point more than what your build gets on it's own.

Well, I mean not stop motion, but like...

Let's take The Corder's Beverly Hill's Music Video. It wasn't ACTUALLY a video, just a siggy doing all of the things in the lyrics. Unless that was what you meant. But, I could add like a video from youtube showing the song, if that's alright with you.

Ahh yes, that kind of thing, if you wish, is perfectly acceptable. If you want to do the old "Moc me a song" type category from past contests then by all means, have at it!

If you would like to add a link to youtube showing the video then you're more than welcome to. It's not going to impact your score in any way (just extra work if you ask me but if that's what you want...).

Good luck!

Unless it's specifically stated for a category there are no size restrictions anywhere in the games. BUT... be sure to read category suggestions in later rounds well because there may be a size restriction in one of those.

For round 1 though, no, any size you want.

I have one more question. Can I put the actual video of the song on my creation? Like, put the embed on the creation, is that fine? Cause', Phippy, I didn't know if you meant the actual link, or put the video on my creation. Link, or embed?

You're of course allowed to embed the song if you wish, that's your choice. A couple of things with that through...

One: It will not effect your score in any way, positive or negative. You will not get extra points for having that "extra thing" nor will you be docked points for adding it.

Two: And this is just a personal choice... a lot of people really... REALLY hate it when there's an autoplay song attached to a moc and it ticks em off to have to rush to hit the mute button when something unexpected pops up.

Again, won't effect score either way so the choice is yours.

Hello!

Even though your conversation with John Daniels has partially cleared things up, I like to complicate things further (sometimes)- I would like to use the entire album with all the titles (for example not only Brain damage/Eclipse) and relate it in a slightly odd way to my build. I currently have a lot of work to do, so I'm not sure that I'll be able to make it, but if I'm lucky, I really don't want to get disqualified or treated differently for doing this. So please tell me if you find this problematic.

Thanks a lot for your answer, have a nice day!

I'm actually talking on the phone with Kelso while I type this and I ran the question by him as well (he's our "stand by judge" remember, so his opinion counts). We both agree that since the precident has been established above (with the whole album title thing) that that would be fine.

As long as it relates back to the original category (and you have it done in time for the end of the round) you're good.

Good luck and I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

Can points be docked from studs showing?
If your question is in reference to studless builds, the answer is no. Points will certainly not be taken off your build if you have studs showing. While tiled or SNOTted builds can be cleaner and maybe garner you more points, Bruce Lowell, for one, is a fantastic example of a builder who creates stunning creations without a lot of studless construction at all. Good question, and good luck!

First, I would like to thank you for your honesty in bringing this to our attention. That will go a LONG way in our final decision.

However, it is technically a rules violation. Here's the copy and paste from the rules on that issue:

"Once you have added your MOC to the group, it is an official entry. Any change made to your post or pictures after this may result in disqualification. Our STRONGEST advice is to allow others to check out your post and give you the OK BEFORE you add it to the group. There's no rule that says you MUST add it to the group right after you post it so be sure it's right before you add it!"

As you'll notice in the second sentence, it doens't say "any MAJOR changes" It says "ANY change made to your post or pictures after this may result in disqualification."

We will discuss this within the judges group and get back to you. Again, your honesty from the start is going to play a MAJOR role in our final decision.

Thank you.

Yeah, that would be pushing the limits of the rule on that one. Basically just think "No special effects" using photoshop and you'll be fine. Using it for cleaning up backgrounds is pretty much all it's allowed for.

Colin,

I told you being honest about the rules "bending" would play a big factor in our ruling. Being as it was only minor changes to the text of the post and nothing to do with the build (which honestly, probably would have gone the other way not in your favor had you changed any of the build) the judges have decided that your entry will stand and will be judged accordingly.

Just... don't do it again.

I'm not a judge but I think I can answer this question okay so you will be given a number lets say the number is 7 then you will be paired up with 8 and if you are the best out of the 64 that make it to round 2 you will be paired up with the worst of the 64. Judges correct me if I'm wrong.

LWC Guy is correct. Your score in round one determines where you will be placed should you advance to round 2.

So in short, the player with the highest score will be facing in round 2, the player with the lowest (advancing to round 2) score. The second highest score will be going against the second lowest and so on until all the top 64 slots are filled.

Hey Garett,

I know spamming is an issue that we (the site administration) has to deal with on a regular basis and believe me, it's a HUGE pain.

For this though, I'd say just leave it. The spam isn't going to effect your score one way or the other where as if you were to take it down and re-upload it, it may cause a little striff within the group ("Well, he reloaded his moc, why can't I?"). Just leave it as is and don't worry about it till after the games.

Thanks for asking though and good luck!

[EDIT] Okay, so now Denis Price has requested I change something in the write-up of my MOC (copyright issues apparently). I was totally oblivious to them until now. So may I please have permission to tweak a few things in my write-up?

[EDIT] I think I'm just going to take the liberty of changing the 5-6 words I had in mind. These changes do not really change the meaning of the write-up at all. And they do not involve any of the required links, or photos. It also deals with the copyright issue. I'm really hopping this is okay. I know it's a small thing to get hung up over, but I want to be fair to my fellow contestants. (I've also talked with Paul about it).

Am I allowed to photo edit the first photo in my MOC, but leave the others alone?

Nope.

We've set a standard with allowing "MINOR" text changes but we have decided (amongst the judges) that any change to any pics after it is added to the group is grounds for an immediate 0 points/DQ.

Thank you for asking though.

Yes, Paul addressed this in the judges group and we have set a precident that we are allowing "MINOR" text changes in this round. As long as it's not the pics or you're changing your whole story then you're good.

For everyone else, we would STILL like to know that you've made a minor change if you do and what that change involves. Round two we will NOT be allowing this AT ALL so get it out of your heads that it's going to be allowed.

Donovan, as one of the judges in the MOs, it's come to my attention that your creation has mysteriously vanished from the group. I'm not sure if you were aware of its disappearance, but in order for it to be judged, you will need to re-add it to the group before the deadline tonight. I'm only commenting because I had judged it previously and then saw it missing.

Will I be penalized for whatever technical issues happened? I did not remove it from the group personally, and I have no programming skill, so I have no idea what happened.

Just add it back to the group. It could have been a glitch or user error (happens all the time, you go to click on "add" for something and you accidentially hit "remove."

Just be carefull it doesn't happen again and yes, please add it to the group again.

Technically, I could have entered it last night, but it wouldn't have been m usual quality, so I decided against it. And, I just remembered I can't do the MIT (If they are doing them this year) either because I didn't enter this. ARGH! Stupid school...

Yep! Pretty much! The judges will score all the entries over the next few days, and then the people with the top 64 scores will move on to the elimination rounds (the "pairing up"). It looks like there's enough players that side games will probably be running for everyone who doesn't make the top 64. Hope that helps! =)

You would not want to do that right now. You will definitely be DQ'ed if you change the pictures. In previous MOC O's, you're allowed to edit after the round. So you're safest bet is to leave things as is until further notice from the judges.

Oh, your entries are being judged alright. Right now actually. We're just not posting each individual judges score on each moc. Once all the judges scores have been added together you will receive one comment from one of the judges with your total combined score from all 6 judges.

Of course, all of the scores will be posted here in the group before then and the players advancing to round two will already know their categories (which will also be posted in the group).

I've been talking a lot about this in the round 1 thread.

Your mocs have ALL been judged by the judges. The issue we're having now is that there was a tie for "60th through 64th" place between 8 players (with only 4 spots to give). Those players are being given tie breaker votes by our tie breaker judge Mark Kelso. Once he has finished the tie breaking, I will post everyone's scores, ranking and for those going on to round two, the matchups and categories.

We're looking at tomorrow at some point, as soon as Mark can get it done.

If you're talking like a herd of cattle or a murder of crows then yes, by all means.

However, I personally would like you to stick with one type of animal. Not a hard and fast rule mind you, just my personal preference.

But something like different fish in a school of fish would be acceptable.

For my category of a Life size LEGO object, how much lenience will we be given for the scale of the object? Minifig object proportions vary from sensible to absurd. If I was building a screwdriver for example, should it be the height of my waist (as it is with minifigs), the scale of a real-life screwdriver, or a comfortable mix between the two?

Category "Life Size Lego Object": Should we make the object accurate to the Lego piece or to the object in real life? For example, the Lego wrench is a slightly different shape than a real wrench. Would we model the MOC based on the piece or make it more accurate to the real thing?

If you have a question that you did not find the answer to in the welcome/rule thread then go back and read it again. If the answer is still not there then ask it here.

Hi, Chris, just a quickie - do we ask round 2 questions here as well, or should we start a new convo?

"Bionicle Universe" Build something related to Bionicles, whether it's part of the official
storyline or your own fiction. You may use as much system as you want, but your creation MUST have something to do with the Bionicle
universe.

I just want to be sure I understand the category. Does it mean that we can build anything out of Bionicles; or build something out of Bionicles that has something to do with the Bionicle story?

Hey Chris,

What about WIPs?

Could I post a WIP on say, my Flickr, and get some advice?

Would that disqualify me?

Absolutely you can. You can post wips on MP if you like, just don't add it to the group. You can do anything you wish BEFORE adding it to the group. Once it's in the group, it's ours.

I actually strongly reccomend you getting feedback throughout (though emails between friends is better because then your opponent can't see it, but that's just a preference, not a rule).

Good luck!

Hello Chris, sorry to be a bother but I have a question. The category I was given for Round 2 is "City Block". Does it have to be based on this time period or can it be Medieval, Western, Sci-fi, etc?

Thanks, Justin.

For that one I'd stay within the last 30 years or so at the most... just to be safe. We're really looking for a "regular city block." And who says there's not another category coming up that asks for that specificially? (not saying there is but what if...)

Yeah, stay in the realm of "Lego city" type stuff for this one.

I'd say built to your hand moreso than actual "minifig scale to you." Some of the things to choose from do tend to be on the "wow, that's big" side so if it's a gun for example, find a comfy mix there but lean more towards it fitting in YOUR hand.

Yeah, about my category, does the person have to be...old, necessarily? Like would Steve Jobs count? Well, do inventors in general count?

Yeah, Steve would be ok. We're REALLY looking for people from the past on this one but there's nothing in the rules that say it can't be someone from the modern era... but I'm going to be honest here, personally, I want to see someone from the past, not present. That's just a personal preference mind you so choose whomever you'd like.

For that one you're trying to match the Lego object, not a real one. Like I said before in regards to this category, you can fudge with the proportions a bit to make it fit your hand better but we're looking for (if you choose a gun) a Lego gun, not a real Glock or whatever you choose.

I will be starting a new thread in a bit. Not because it's round two but just because this one is sooooo long.

Hopefully, the questions will slow down a bit (not stop mind you because I like to make sure everyone is fully informed) as the rounds progress and we won't need more than one more.

We opened that one up so that if someone without a lot of bio pieces got it, they could build more system but put biostuff in it. If you choose to build simply a bionicle then by all means, it's "part of that universe" so it's all good.
