The first thing you must do is choose which side you will support, the Free People or the Host of Mordor. Once you have made your choice you will be given a rank which you can find in either "The Free Peoples" thread or the "Mordor Host" thread depending on who you joined.
Once you have your rank you can go away and build your sig-fig. You can be any race you wish so long as it is stated at the top of your thread under the Sig-Fig advice titl in the first comment.

Each army has a leader who will judge the weekly main mission and a second in command who will come up with monthly side missions that will give people the chance to advance in the rankings.

For the main mission judging takes places as follows..
Grunts: Score out of 10
Warriors: Score out of 30
Captain: Score out of 40
Generals and leaders: Score out of 50
An average will be taken for each rank and then a winner will be decided. Should your team win you will gain control of a region, once you have control of 5 regions you can attack one of the opposite team's capital regions.
The winning team is the first to capture all 3 capital regions and win the following final battle.

Side missions will be judged out of 10 regardless of rank but may not always be open to the entire team.

I am sure you have lots of questions still to ask, if that is the case then please post them here and I will do my best to explain how things work.
